Which is better - RT.X100 or DVStorm2?
 

I am building a new computer for video editing and will be getting either the Canopus DVStorm2 or the Matrox RT.X100. I’ve researched both a lot (and read what I could find on this great forum) but still haven’t been able to figure out which one is better for my needs. I do primarily documentary-style productions.

Specifically:

Which one has the best tools for color correction?

Does the best slow motion?

How do the cards’ soft-focus filters compare?

I know the RT.X100 can do hardware accelerated batch encoding to multiple streaming formats at different resolutions and speeds, which would be a big time saver for me. Can the DVStorm2 this?

Also, the RT.X100 also has a real-time conversion for 16x9 to 4x3 ratios and vice-versa. Can the DVStorm2 do this as well?

Any other information you can give me on the differences between them would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know either, in a couple of days a can tell you

My primary reason to going with the Storm was

* The hardware MPEG module gets very good ratings everywhere
* The great color correction

and less important:

I have had problems with Matrox products earlier on.

Hi Lars, thanks for the reply. I think I would be biased if I just dropped a chunk of change on one of these cards ;-)

What Matrox products did you have previously, and what were the problems you encountered? I'm interested in hearing your experience with the DVStorm2 once you get a chance to try it.

The RTX is decent hardware, and are both as good as each other. It is best that you get a demo with each product to find out which one suits you.

The RTX is quite hardware intensive, so check your comp spec to the one on Matroxs web site.

Matrox have improved its 'tools' including colour correction, make sure you go for an RTX 100 extreme with Premiere Pro.

The decision is yours...
