best miniDV tape?
 
any suggestions or are all the big name tapes generally the same?

I moved your post to our tape forum. Basically, there is no true answer to your question. But search in this forum to see oodles of anecdotes. In general, the best policy is to pick the best brand and grade you can afford and stick with it.
