Panasonic 80min tapes
Can i use 80min Panasonic tapes with canon xl1s.
another question is there any recomendation for using panasonic 60min tape (Datalive plus) or somthing like that.? is it good or bad. |
Jarek,
You -can- use 80 minute tapes with the XL1s. But the general feeling is that it's just a touch riskier than the 60 min tapes due to a thinner tape material (to fit into the same size cassette). We literally have hundreds of posts here on tape. Do a Search to dig up more than you every wanted to know on the subject. |

I'm looking all over this forum. (its grate) but there is no specific explenation for this matter

You should find plenty of tape information in this list.

I use Panasonic tape without any problems. I usually use the 60 minute tapes rather than the 80 minute tapes for two reasons. First: The 60 minute tape are a lot lower cost and work fine for my shoots (rarely over 60 miutes without time to change tape). Second: as Ken stated, the 80 minute tapes are thinner base and thus would be a bit more prone to stretching or other mecahnical failure.

I agree. There is nothing wrong with 80 minute tapes (I think Chris Hurd uses them) other than they are thinner and may be more prone to problems.

We use 'em
We use the 80 min Panasonic tapes A LOT, and even worse, sometimes in LP mode...
We've used 6 boxes this year which is 30 tapes, and have not had any problems with them in any of our cams: 2 GL1's, 2 VX2K's, and 1 XL1s. (knock on wood) On an unrelated note, we've also started extensively 'recycling' used 60 minute tapes and have had only a handful of dropouts (where old program material came through on top of new material) out of 50 or 60 60-min tapes we've recycled... Those are 1-time recycles. Kyle www.lookmom.net |
