.7x Wide-Angle Converter from 16x9 for HM100 - Anyone used?

Here is a link to a .7x wide-angle converter made by 16x9 that is for the HM100.
16x9 Inc. | EX 0.7X WIDE CONVERTER f/JVC HM-100 | 169-HD7X-HM100

Has anyone tried this? It appears this may be the same one that is sold for the Sony HVR-V1U & HDR-FX7, but I don't know.

Note: Century will have one or two adapters/converters (not sure which) within a couple of weeks for the HM100. The Century ones are units in stock that are being setup to mount on the HM100. The possible sizes are .55x and .65x I think, but I'm not sure.

Matthias Krause May 24th, 2009 01:55 PM

They are surely asking a pretty penny... I have the JVC adapter but didn´t have time to put it through the paces yet.

Thanks for the link and info. I got the JVC .7x wide-angle converter with my HM-100 and it does work very well - no issues with it except a teeny bit fuzzy when zoomed right in, nothing serious. To be honest, I got it to use at the wide end - if I want telephoto I take it off...

Very interested if Century are making a .55x I would probably go for that - one can never get too wide ;-)

There is a ton of 46mm wide angle lens converters on the market for still cameras (like Panasonic DMW-LW46, which costs something like $126. Don't spend your hard earned cash on hype.

Keith Moreau May 26th, 2009 01:12 AM

In fact I had a couple Nikon WC-E68's that I had for some CoolPix digital cameras and they have a 46mm thread and the glass is pretty nice. I'm going to test it out. For now I'm going to hold off on investing in a wide converter until I test some of the less expensive options.

Indeed, you are right they do not work! Only we have to buy genuine accesories!

Does the Nikon WC-E68 fit on the HM100? (on the set back threads?)
Does it work through the entire zoom range?
How are the coatings on this converter?

It has 46mm threads so it screws right onto the set back threads right in front of the lens with the lens hood removed.

I haven't had a chance to really test it at all, so I can't attest to the image quality. Initial results are that it does zoom through fine. I don't know about the multi-coatings, etc on it. It's a pretty inexpensive lens, even when new, but it got great reviews as a good buy when it came out for the Coolpix series. I've used it on my Coolpix 5400 for timelapse photography extensively. I'll get back here with some results when I have them.

Robert Rogoz May 28th, 2009 08:55 AM

Keith, did you have a chance to test the lens yet?

Shaun Walker May 30th, 2009 07:17 PM

16x9 zoom through??

Is the 16x9 .7X wide a zoom through?

Kajito Nagib May 30th, 2009 07:24 PM

I just noticed this on B&H for $215.
JVC | GL-V0746U Wide Conversion Lens | GL-V0746USP | B&H Photo

Matthias Krause May 30th, 2009 07:39 PM

Adorama sells it for $189...

Wide angle lens comparison

I need to buy a wide angle lens converters for my HM100. Could someone explain to me the difference between the 16x9 Inc. 169-HD7X-HM100 0.7 Wide Angle Converter Lens 16x9 Inc. | 169-HD7X-HM100 0.7 Wide Angle | 169-HD7X-HM100 | B&H and the GL-V0746U Wide Conversion Lens?
B&H Kit Info

Also has Century already come out with a new adapters/converters for the HM100?

Robert Rogoz July 14th, 2009 02:19 PM

The difference I see between 16x9 and JVC converters is 16x9 has a front lens thread. This will allow you to attache filters and a light matte box without a need for rails.
I bought Nikon WC-E68 for $35 and $8 rubber lens hood, rigged lens good onto the converter and call it good. I think Nikon has superior glass to jvc or 16x9 anyway.

Tim Nielsen July 21st, 2009 01:15 PM

Nikon thread size

I couldn't find anywhere what the thread size is for the 'front' of the Nikon .7 adapter. I'd like to add a lens hood, but not sure what the thread size is.

But I've been using it, and it's been working great. Zoom feels a tad soft at the fully zoomed out end of the travel, but seems sharp otherwise, and no vignetting that I'm seeing on full wide. I got mine on eBay for $45 shipped, certainly a much better deal than the $200 JCV one!

Tim

Robert Rogoz July 21st, 2009 06:01 PM

Tim there is no front end tread on Nikon WC-E68, hence the need to rig something up. I bought a 68 mm rubber hood and just glued it to the outside of the converter.
Most of these converters have glass element sticking forward, so you can't place even a bayonet filter on the front.
The most ridiculous thing is that if you charge 200 or 300 bucks I would supply a lens hood (which btw you can manufacture for pennies) with the converter lens.

I just got mine. My only complaint is that it is a little too heavy for me. (19.4 oz)
The front end of the camera dips downward because of the weight. This shouldn't be a problem if it is on a tripod but hand held is another story. Does anyone know if the GL-V0746U Wide Conversion Lens from JVC is any lighter?

John McDonald August 10th, 2009 05:08 AM

"My only complaint is that it is a little too heavy for me. (19.4 oz) The front end of the camera dips downward because of the weight."

I'm glad you mentioned that as I was wondering about that. I've had problems with lens breaking the threads under duress.

What to do? I need a wide angel lens that takes filters that isn't too heavy......

Kajito Nagib August 10th, 2009 04:26 PM

I returned the 16X9 wide converter it was just too heavy for me. I placed an order for the JVC wide angle lens with B&H 3 weeks ago still waiting. Hopefully it will be lighter.

Roger Baudet August 15th, 2009 08:30 AM

Wide angle

Is 16/9 Inc wide angle better than JVC wide angle ?

As anything tested it ?

John McDonald August 19th, 2009 09:27 AM

Wide angle filters?

I have one on order and now need to get some (82mm?) filters for it - can anybody suggest good brands? I will mostly be filming outdoors in difficult conditions.

Hoya and B+W do slim line filters I believe for wide angles lens I blieve?

Roger Baudet August 20th, 2009 12:23 PM

Yes, I am now the 16/9 Inc wide angle.
Its very very very heavy.
But its very very very good !
I am very happy to have it !

Brandon Puet August 21st, 2009 09:06 PM

Kajito, did you get your JVC lens? They seem to be backordered everywhere

For a zoom through 0.7 convertor? That's about half what I'd expect to pay. USD379 is a really good price - if the optics are up to it. But as has been noted many times on this board, in optics, the price/quality graph is a straight line one.

Roger Baudet August 25th, 2009 09:29 AM

I have now receive the 16/9 Inc 07x for HM100.

Its a very good optic but a little heavy.

Many thanks!

Although it's called a 16x9 hood Roger, I actually think it's 4:3 in aspect ratio. Can you confirm or deny this please?

Barmy. Who shoots in 4:3 these days? And if you bothered to buy, fit and use a hood, why sacrifice some efficiency by having it the wrong shape?

just had an online chat with one of the JVC sales rep he told me that the expected date from JVC wide angle lens came and passed, and they didn't receive anything yet. I placed an order on 7/27. Just wanted to give anyone intrested the heads up.

Sam Young September 10th, 2009 09:34 PM

I was able to buy the JVC wide angle lens along with the HM 100 in Hong Kong a week ago, I guess HK hasn't run out yet.

Brandon Puet September 24th, 2009 10:07 PM

The JVC wide angle lens just got back in stock at B&H. Anyone know of any filters or any type of protection for this lens?

You are joking about filters? As it was said (even in this thread) there is nothing to attach filters to on a converter! No sun hood either. This converter is just the same as from GZ7 consumer model from a couple of years ago.

Yes, best protection is to wrap it in cling-film with a couple of sachets of silica-gel and keep it at home.

Best way to use it? Unfiltered, fitted straight onto the camera's zoom, using an aspect ratio shadowed lens hood.

Nikon WC-E68 .7x Lens Convertor - Barrel Distortion?

I'm about to buy the Nikon Lens Convertor and I wanted to know if there is any barrel distortion from it. I'll be using the lens for real estate shoots and am trying to avoid " bent " walls.
