A resolution question

Hi all,
I want to confirm something with you to ensure I'm not missing something.

When shooting my kid's baseball games, I notice that the back ground
if very detailed (like a hill full of grass, brush, trees) will lose
resolution the more I pull away from it.

Specifically, if I zoom into the hillside to focus on the detail, then
zoom out to take in the game (with auto focus off) then at some point I
notice this effect. I see it in the grass on the baseball field as well.

My assumption is that there is too much detail for the camera to digitally handle, or the MPEG compression/Mini-DV can't handle the bandwidth.

I'm viewing this on an HDTV.

What say the all knowing ones? :)

Thank you,

Alan

P.S. The video is still outstanding compared to any other SD video I've seen on my HDTV.

What you are seeing is depth of field (dof) Based on many factors your camera will focus to different distances. If your background is blurry you have a short depth of field. Background clear, you have a long depth of field. Your lens, zoom and F-stop will all come into play. I would recommend a book on basic photo/video shooting.

Ah, so it's user error then... ;)
I WILL find a book and begin learning what I'm missing.

Ken, thank you.

Alan

Well good luck then.
I think you probably already have some of the best baseball home vids there are. Good to see your intrest in working out the complexities.
