It is a filter slot in the mattebox that can rotate for using something like a polar filter. My Cavision mattebox has one fixed filter slot and one rotating filter slot.

Ken,
The mattebox's rotating filter holder is designed for directional filters like polarizers and filters with gradients. It would work perfectly for the variable ND filter being proposed here; place one polarizer in the fixed slot and the second in the rotating slot.
