Some of you folks have much better design skills than we do here. Ours has just sort of grown via the "it sorta fits here" school of design. It looks a lot better when the overheads are off, so we make sure the lights are low when clients are around....

Shooting Central Gold.

8 Attachment(s)
Okay, now that I have your attention.

I've just returned from a 6 day session in Central Otago, where the plan was to shoot as much video as humanly possible on the Autumnal changes that the area experiences.

The colours are just drop dead geogeous if the light behaves, but as the weather is decidedly fickle, it's a big ask in the time frame available (the colours can come and the leaves drop in less that a week in the right conditions).

It was whilst driving some of the 1,800 km I covered during the 6 days that it occured to me:

"How many people would believe the amount of gear one person could haul round the whole of Central?"

It then occured to me that this might be of interest to some at DVinfo, so here goes.

1. Delivery System:

Chosen for the job, cavernous and comfortable. Too low and long for off roading but working on an alternative.

2. Day Pack:

Contents:

Large bottle of water, ditto sunblock, ditto insect repellant. Laser Range Finder, Spare batteries for everything, 3 - 4 tapes, 2 - 3 SD cards, cleaning gear, filters.

3. Bag Lady:

Really must sort this. Manuals, bulk tapes, spare glasses, tools, tie downs, magnifying glass (?), cables, chargers, gaffer tape etc.

4.Blue Box:

Headphones, Zoom H4 digital recorder, XLR cables - 1, 2, 3, 5 & 10 metres.

More in next post................

CS

PS. Another whoops. The camera is a Canon XH A1, in case anyone was wondering.

More of "Shooting Otago Gold"

The list continues.

5. Orange Box:

Senn ME 64 & ME66 mics (ME67 usually on camera), EW100 G2 wireless transmitters (2), receiver (1) [one always on camera], lav mic, camera connect cables for everyting, spare batteries, 2 mics for those "I don't care if they get trashed" moments.

6. Grey Box:

Rycote Softies for ME64 & 66, Windjammers with dead cats for all three mics, pistol grips (2), spare/ optional mic mounts (6), spare parts for all systems (rubber bands etc).

7. Big Box:

Microphone stands - small and large, Rode boom pole. Mounting/ support rods for B. Hague suction mount system (not usually carried on routine shoots).
[Foam is to offer occupants of car a better chance should this stuff break out of box]

8. Tripod:

The trusty Vinten FiberTec's themselves.

And still more..........................

Shooting Otago Gold, cont'd.................

Finally, the last few items.

One many pocketed photogs jacket, got more storage space than, well, any number of things. Jolly usefull when you've got your hands full.

The mandatory peaked cap, essential to keep the sun off LCD's, photochromatic glasses and eyes themselves.

Manfrotto Monopod for the Nikon D80 DSLR.

Not shown is set of hiking boots that lives in the back seat foot well for those "Off Road" moments.

And lastly, a map of Southern NZ in general and the area travelled in detail.

The story in the next exciting episode..................

Shooting Otago Gold...........

Well, the plan was to get up there and do an initial recky to establish what was ready to shoot, where.

This involved a marathon journey from Wanaka via the Tarras road, down the East side of Lake Dunstan to Cromwell. From there to Arrow Town via the Gibbston Valley, on to Lake Hayes then back over the Crown Range Road, along the Cadronna valley back to Wanaka.

Horrors! Nothing was "cooked"! This could take days!

The following day I went further afield to Hawea (nope!) then back and out to Tarras and quite some way towards Mount Cook (nothing!).

The next day it rained.

The following day was wall to wall cloud.

The next day I checked out Arrowtown again (zipping over the Crown Range road to save time).

Perfect! Cooked to perfection.

But, the weather report wasn't promissing for following days and it was taking an age to get every minute of video.

Something had to give.

With all that wonderfull video gear on board and available, some of the most beautifull scenery on the planet to capture, I , sob, abandoned it and went over to stills to get what I could get, whilst it was still gettable.

How's that for a bummer?

However...........I do have to say, the stills are absolutely, gob smackingly beautifull.

I'm going back in a couple of days to see if I can get the part's that weren't "cooked" the first time around, but that pesky weather is not looking good and the window is minute - still no video.

The one thing I have learnt is that there is no such thing as "good, quick video". There's no such thing as "good, quick stills" either, but they're a damn site faster to get than video.

Cheers,

CS

Duh!

Ok, 'cos I'm a nice fella (really) try these. A random sampling.

I'll take out the vignette with Photoshop at some stage, was using the Polariser with the UV still on and couldn't see it till that evenings review.

More in following post.................

Although I wouldn't suggest it if you plan on rack-mounting stuff. The welds aren't made for heavy items.

Brian David Melnyk June 6th, 2008 03:50 AM

interesting thread: just avoided work for about an hour!
here is my 'Africa' setup (had to leave much gear in Canada!!!).
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/4...udiowebyg1.jpg
not pictured but essential gear:
XH-A1
FCPS2
Neumann TLM49
Canon digital rebel (Canon 70-300 with IS RULES)
Ibanez SG400 bass guitar
Ibanez Roadstar electric guitar (circa 1987)
Gibson Epiphone acoustic
Takamine EG500 acoustic

When i visit Canada this summer i will add:
Macbook pro
Firestore
Libec 38
Merlin
Mbox pro?
DFH drum program
Sans Amp or Amplitube

I seem to be working for my gear addiction...

Shaun Roemich June 6th, 2008 10:50 AM

Hey Brian, fellow 'pegger here.

Is that a Digi003 Rack I see? How well does it play with the iMac? I'm looking at turning my iMac into a ProTools station (and retiring my B&W G3 450 w. Digi001) and moving FCPS2 to a Mac Pro.

Brian David Melnyk June 7th, 2008 06:46 AM

Hey Shaun,
looking forward to visiting Winnipeg this summer and eating a big fat Georges Burger with Nucci's Gelati for desert!
It is the Digi 002, and after a few initial problems that were solved with instructions from Digidesign support, i am very happy with it. I think i had some problems after installing FCPS 2, also solved by Digi support..
i moved from a G4/ 001 setup, and am really happy i did so. much more options with 002 and the ignition pack is great, especially Maxim, T-racks EQ, Bombfactory 1176, Amplitube and BFD. If i could do it again, though, i would have gone for the 'factory', as those extra plug-ins would be great to have...
if i wasn't on another continent, i would also love to have the Black Lion 002 mods... the pres are functional on 002, but the mods would give you 4 outstanding pres... Not sure which PT version is the max for 001, but with 7.3 you get the ability to give each track its own color. It sounds trivial, but this simple feature has made the mixer WAY easier to use and organize if you have a lot of tracks, and it is very quick to find the RED bass or the Blue lead guitar(s!)...
Shaun, i actually asked you a few questions on another post, but i'll paste them here:
Shaun Roemich: i notice you are from Winnipeg, my hometown! i am now living in Burundi and have no access to technology. I am visiting Winnipeg in a few months and need GEAR!!! I have been in contact with Advance Electronics, but they are a little slack and don't have all that i need. Is there another pro video store in Winnipeg that you know of? i specifically need a Firestore and a Libec LS38 Tripod, and my experience with B&H is that you have to pay $$$ import tax etc. so money saved is negligible...
Thanks!

Work suite

1 Attachment(s)
This is my suite at work. Optimized for HDV editing with the XHA1.

Running Intel Quad core at 2.4GHz, 4 GB of Ram, and Adobe's Masterworks CS3 collection.

What I do at work is primarily video with Premiere/After Effects/Encore, photography/graphics design with Photoshop/Fireworks, and Web production with Dreamweaver/Flash.

My home office is set up for audio production with ProTools and a 24 track HDD recording system based around the Alesis HD24. I'll probably post pics of that one eventually...

What you see in this picture is my editing computer with two 22" HD screens by ASUS, my "other" computer which is a cheap thing that is used primarily for web browsing/e-mail/Microsoft Office stuff (actually, if you look closely, you'll see that I've got DVinfo.net loaded on that computer...) Also in screen is an old Sony VX2000 which I'm using as a deck to transfer some SD footage for editing.

The picture was taken with my XHA1's photo option onto the card. No post/color done on the picture at all.

That's just the client monitor. I use the NTSC monitor. I'd love to sell that boat anchor and get another lil LCD but nobody wants the dang thing. lol

Shaun Roemich October 2nd, 2009 06:56 AM

Grinner: nice "cave". Where did you get the desk? I'm going to be in the market soon and I like yours.

A client's husband made it for me for 1500 bucks. Awesome deal.

Shaun Roemich October 3rd, 2009 04:00 PM

Grinner: I was "afraid" of that... Figured I'd have to spring for a custom jobbie. Thanks for responding. $1500 IS a steal. Now I just need to find a carpenter/woodsmith with too much money, too much time on his hands and a heart of gold...

Grinner Hester October 13th, 2009 11:41 AM

It was a steal but was quite the buddy deal. Lord knows I cut her many breaks over the years. lol
There are not many consoles out there today big enough or high enough for what we do, if ya think about it. Even the $3k and above consoles are kind of like "eeeh, man I guess that would do." Don't settle. You'll be sitting there more than half of your waking hours. Grab a saw if you must. I can tell you, if you allow carple tunnel to set in, it can greatly affect your career. There are a few ways to get rid of it but only one way to avoid it... proper ergonomics.
