I'm trying to get some ideas together to make a good editing suite but my knowledge on the subject is pretty limited. All I've ever worked on is one cmptr w/ the nle system, nothing extra. In your setup, I know what the mac is and what it's primary use it but what about the other computer and screens; what do u use that for?

So the iMac is the main unit right, and the screen right next to it is used in conjunction with the iMac for expanding windows into that screen so I can have more stuf up at the same time. That screen usually has my Final Cut browser window and the effects pane, and I also run the video scopes in that as well, while im editing. The other screen to the very left is attached to my PC system, which i have After effects and Final Draft. Usually while im designing stuff on the mac i have it open with itunes and play music. I also have a couple games on it as well to take some of the stress out.

Here's our work space the right side is the HD setup Quad core 1.5TB HDD
and since this picture was taken Ive added a Samsung 23" HDTV to supplement the Sammy 22" WS monitor, the left station is the SD Editing station, On the other side of the room is a X2 4400 HTPC system which acts as a spare HD editing system in case we get real busy and is connected to our sammy 42" HDTV used for viewing finished projects. All 3 Systems Are hardwire Lan Networked together and can share video & audio Data, The HTPC
Has over 1600 Albums converted to high bit rate MP3 Files for music listening & sharing between the 3 stations, everything intigrates very Nicely actually. The HTPC has been upgraded to BD R/W and a HD PVR has been added as well. The next upgrade is to add another BD R/W to the HD workstation for full independence on that system.

Some of you folks have much better design skills than we do here. Ours has just sort of grown via the "it sorta fits here" school of design. It looks a lot better when the overheads are off, so we make sure the lights are low when clients are around....

Shooting Central Gold.
 

Okay, now that I have your attention.

I've just returned from a 6 day session in Central Otago, where the plan was to shoot as much video as humanly possible on the Autumnal changes that the area experiences.

The colours are just drop dead geogeous if the light behaves, but as the weather is decidedly fickle, it's a big ask in the time frame available (the colours can come and the leaves drop in less that a week in the right conditions).

It was whilst driving some of the 1,800 km I covered during the 6 days that it occured to me:

"How many people would believe the amount of gear one person could haul round the whole of Central?"

It then occured to me that this might be of interest to some at DVinfo, so here goes.

1. Delivery System:

Chosen for the job, cavernous and comfortable. Too low and long for off roading but working on an alternative.

2. Day Pack:

Contents:

Large bottle of water, ditto sunblock, ditto insect repellant. Laser Range Finder, Spare batteries for everything, 3 - 4 tapes, 2 - 3 SD cards, cleaning gear, filters.

3. Bag Lady:

Really must sort this. Manuals, bulk tapes, spare glasses, tools, tie downs, magnifying glass (?), cables, chargers, gaffer tape etc.

4.Blue Box:

Headphones, Zoom H4 digital recorder, XLR cables - 1, 2, 3, 5 & 10 metres.

5. Orange Box:

Senn ME 64 & ME66 mics (ME67 usually on camera), EW100 G2 wireless transmitters (2), receiver (1) [one always on camera], lav mic, camera connect cables for everyting, spare batteries, 2 mics for those "I don't care if they get trashed" moments.

6. Grey Box:

Rycote Softies for ME64 & 66, Windjammers with dead cats for all three mics, pistol grips (2), spare/ optional mic mounts (6), spare parts for all systems (rubber bands etc).

7. Big Box:

Microphone stands - small and large, Rode boom pole. Mounting/ support rods for B. Hague suction mount system (not usually carried on routine shoots).
[Foam is to offer occupants of car a better chance should this stuff break out of box]

8. Tripod:

The trusty Vinten FiberTec's themselves.
