Looking for a place to intern in Houston.

Re: Looking for a place to intern in Houston.

Hi. In what area are you looking to intern? In news? Film production? Commercial/corporate? I would make a decision on that first, and then check out the Houston Production guide online:

Houston Production Guide

It's a fairly comprehensive database of every production company, service and even individual crew members/employees in the video/film business in Houston. Try to find the companies your field of interest and just cold call (I'm sorry, I wouldn't know who to ask for) and see if they're looking to hire interns.

I didn't catch if you were 18 yet or not, and I'm not sure if that matters (not too familiar with the labor laws), but there are generally movies and TV shows shooting all the time that are looking for intern positions. Many ads for those on the Houston Film Commission and Texas Film Commission websites:

Houston Film Commission - Texas Filmmaker's Showcase - Visit Houston Texas

Texas Film Commission, Office of the Governor Rick Perry - Job Hotline Crew Calls

Hope that helps.

5D3 operators in Austin?

I got a cool gig this weekend mixing a couple C300s and my 5D3 - the producer just asked if I know another 5D3 owner/operator in town (Austin, TX). I don't. Do you?

Thanks!

We are updating firmware for free on the cameras and have a bevy of operators who have picked up locally. If the need arises I'll pass YOUR info to them and THEY can respond. I won't release client info without them knowing...

Re: Looking for a place to intern in Houston.

thanks a lot Bass, sorry for the late reply, I didn't know how to subscribe to threads back then. I would want to work for film production and corporates work. Not really interested in News. Do you now if there are any good film school in Houston? I heard from people that Houston Community College is good for film and Alvin ( which is close to me) have a really good broadcasting program. I might go into tv broadcasting if there is a higher chance of a stable job. And yes I am already 18, about to get out of high school in June 2nd and head off to college to follow my dream :)

Josh Bass May 23rd, 2012 03:07 AM

Re: Looking for a place to intern in Houston.

No worries.

There are not really any film schools in Houston. There are places with film/TV/etc. PROGRAMS, like, yes, HCC, UofH has something, Art Institute, etc. As I understand it these are by no means in the same league as attending a "real" film school. UT in Austin is pretty well known for their film program. Other than that, I don't even know what (if anything) is in Texas.

Please know that film school is not required or even any kind of guarantee that you will make it in the industry. It's just one of several valid avenues to get you there.

Victor Nguyen May 23rd, 2012 06:21 AM

Re: Looking for a place to intern in Houston.

yes I know, just hoping to make some contacts and the training might be useful. How about for television? is it the same as filmmaking where I really don't need a degree?

Josh Bass May 23rd, 2012 02:33 PM

Re: Looking for a place to intern in Houston.

Depends what you mean by "television".

I believe some positions as TV stations do actually require a degree, but that may more for working in news or operations (operations being basically helping run the station, in a technical sense -- master controller, stuff like that). There may be a few shows around town that need crew people (Hot on Homes, etc.), and I couldn't say as to whether those would require degrees or not.

Google "tv jobs Houston" or similar and see what pops up. Also check each station's web site for job listings and see if they mention degrees.

Pageant editing

Shot a local pageant with 3 cameras (Sony cx55x series) and have separate audio. Not up to putting it all together for a dvd. Looking for help putting the footage together with output being a dvd & bluray dvd. Not the best quality due to lack of lighting and such. Just need it all put together as best as possible and finished. Better half is on my butt. I would prefer Vegas so I can copy the job to my computer after it is finished.

Email me with any questions.
Thanks

Hi Richard,

I can't email you as it's not an option when I click on your name. I edit in Vegas Pro 9. What is the anticipated length of the finished video? What is your timeline for getting it done? And what is your budget for getting the edit done? Email me if you're still looking for someone to do it.

Thanks,

Judging by the celeb news, there should be a lot of biz in LA. Colorful site too, all the best.

Producing music videos, having someone help

I produce and direct music videos, and I really need someone to help plan out this music video that I am in pre-production for. Would the title for that person be; co-producer? or what should I call this person when I ask people if they want to help out with the pre-production/planing?

I do know a possible person I have worked with, but they work under their own company name. Should I consider using this person and say the video was produced by (company A) and company (B)?

OR since I am the one who got the client, should I keep it solely under my business name? And then tell that person that I am hiring you; not your business name?

Paul R Johnson June 5th, 2012 10:00 AM

Re: Producing music videos, having someone help

Why not call them the Production Manager - as the individual, So Production Manager, Fred Smith or if they want the company name then the credit becomes Production Management FS Films

You then have the producer and under them, the production manager. Sort of shows the heirachy too.

Re: Looking for a place to intern in Houston.

mostly on finding more jobs and networking.

Josh Bass June 15th, 2012 12:18 AM

Re: Looking for a place to intern in Houston.

Have I given you the spiel about using the Houston production guide to find and contact varous producers, etc.? If not email me and I'll do it via that so we don't take up forum space.

Other than that, unfortunately, it tends to be about who you know. Meeting people and leaving impressions. Things I'm REALLY BAD AT.

I would say get business cards printed up for whatever job position you are trying to get more work in (cameraman? PA? Grip?). Either an all in one card, or maybe, several different cards, one for each job position. Then, next time you're on a crew, hand those out to everyone at some opportune time (maybe toward the end of the day when you've had a chance to dazzle everyone with your mad skillz).

Look for opportunities to network with other crew members, etc. on shoots, let them know what you do and that you're available, attend mixers around town (there are several facebook groups, yahoo groups, etc. with mailing lists about upcoming industry events). Go to those, holla at people, hand out cards.

Look on Houston film commission and texas film commission website for jobs (they'll have listings of TV shows, movies, and maybe some other types of productions needing crew).

List yourself on any website you can (for free I mean), try to put up a portfolio of material.

I won't lie, I'm terrible on all the networking/self promotion stuff, mostly 'cause none of my (admittedly rare) attempts and putting myself out there ever landed me a single gig, so now I'm bitter and jaded, but it's a numbers game so if you're all Type A and whatnot then you will probably do better.

Oh yeah, lastly. . .I'm assuming you have a cell phone. Always (within reason, say between morning and evening) leave it on, near you so that when someone calls you don't find out three hours later. People tend to want to hire RIGHT NOW and so if you miss the call they're on to someone else three minutes later.

Ey Brian! I just moved into LA and I'm gathering some equipment. I used to have a Sony Ex1r and a couple of things back in my town but now I got something lighter. So far I have a Mark ii with the 24-105, a tamron 90mm and that cheap but awesome canon 50mm 1.8.
I also have a glidecam with the vest and can operate decently, a 580 EX flash and i'm looking to get a small led light that can help me with this kind of thing.
Would you be interested?

Looking for Chicago video production work

I'm interested in any freelance or work opportunities in the general Chicago area. I have experience as a videographer and currently use a T3i. I love working on post and use the Adobe suite. I have skills with After Effects creating motion graphics, animation, special effects compositing, and color grading. I'm also handy with Photoshop and freelance as a graphic designer when I get the chance.

I would consider an internship role if it will lead to a job once I prove myself. I would also consider free work if I felt it would be great for networking or really boost my portfolio.

Thank you
