Removing the hand should be fairly easy. Adding some elements to the plate smash seems like it will be a fun challenge. I envision a few fragments of porcelain flying at the camera and rotating with specular highlights. Send me a losless file of the video along with a more detailed description of what you want and I'll see what I can do.

And of course, what is your deadline?

Eric.

El Regreso (The Return)

I just learned that El Regreso (The Return), a feature film I color graded, just won Best International Feature Film at it's premiere at the 2011 New York International Latino Film Festival, presented by HBO.

Congrats to Hernan Jimenez, who was nominated for Best Director (he also played the lead role), and to fantastic cast and crew!

Need Freelance Shooters/Editors New Orleans

We are expanding the list of freelance videographers and editors we use. We are in the New Orleans (Louisiana) area. (Actually, on the North Shore, for those who know the area.)

We have regular need for day shooters and editors who can handle quick turnaround for our short 2-5 minute) videos. We also produce two national TV series, and we may use shooters for day work on those.

Shooters would need to be within driving distance.

We provide cameras, sound gear, etc. Editors must have their own equipment.

Contact Tom Gresham. tom@guntalk.com

It's possible that the freelance work could grow to a full-time employment.

Everyone...Tom and his crew are great to work with. Done several shoots with them here in Phx and when i happened to be travelling through NOLA. They are very professional but relaxed and fun. If I lived close, I'd be all over this opportunity!

So folks -- are you saying that $200 is too much for someone with a simple camera shooting B-roll?

Or is it too low? If you are going to be condescending, at least be clear about it.

Best of luck, Tony. I'm sure someone will take you up on your offer.

Cheers.

Kevin Spahr September 14th, 2011 07:58 PM

Re: Looking for a second shooter with camera pkg

What?

The mid range camera that I run can not even be rented for double what this job pays (then add the sticks and mics to that). What about the cost and time of driving to and from the gig plus the TEN HOURS of work. Then consider local, state, federal and social security taxes on your earnings, what about liability insurance, heath care, and retirement? Or do you just jam the cash in your pocket and forget about these things?

I guess it depends on the value you place on your ability. Next time maybe you'll do it for the "exposure" or to "fill out your portfolio".

I'd just hate to see DVInfo turn into another Craigslist.

Re: Looking for a second shooter with camera pkg

Christian, I thought it was pretty clear.

What does it cost in DC to simply rent a decent HD/HDV camera package that includes batteries, tripod, etc., weekend rate? Fairly close to what was said the pay was I bet.

I don't know about DC, but out here $200 for an 8 hr day for anyone who's experienced and has their own gear is roughly a 1/3 to 1/2 (bare minimum) the going rate. Because it's b-roll has nothing to do with it in my opinion.

Bill Busby September 14th, 2011 08:16 PM

Re: Looking for a second shooter with camera pkg

That's what I get for stepping away for a bit just after I started typing. Kevin, if I had known you had already posted again I would have just let it be :D

Chris Harding September 14th, 2011 09:09 PM

Re: Looking for a second shooter with camera pkg

Hi Guys

Over here the going rate is $30.00 an hour if you use the videographers spare camera or $50.00 an hour if you have your own gear so 8 hours on site would pay normally $400.00 unless it was a really out of the city job!!

I pay my new 2nd shooter $30 an hour from the time she leaves home (using my cameras) so probably $200 isn't quite enough incentive to go out and do it!! Our shooters would also get a meal.

Chris

Look two posts down... first wanted to hire a cam, then in desperation, wanted to hire a second op... WITH a camera... for LAST weekend... hmmm, not sure how that worked out...

I don't think anyone here is being condescending, just pointing out that the "offer" is pretty low by any estimation, for 8 hours plus travel and you supply the camera... for 2-3 hours, and very limited travel, MAYBE It'd be worth it...

Then again, probably someone desperate enough and local enough, or amateur enough...

Hey, if he'd been an hour closer and a shorter gig, I might have considered lending a hand... but no...

Sydney Australia - Renting a hospital room for an hour.

I need to film someone dead on a hospital table. With people crying around him. Just wondering if someone knows of a place that will allow me to use a room in a hospital - or will rent for a reasonable price.

Christian Brown September 15th, 2011 09:12 PM

Re: Looking for a second shooter with camera pkg

He didn't say he was looking for a nice camera.
He didn't say he was looking for someone with experience.
He didn't say he was looking for someone to travel.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, and not every gig requires a full-time professional.

If you want to bid on a job anyway, politely PM or post and say what your requirements are and what you provide. Ragging on someone who is working a gig that doesn't appear to be at your "tier" is a waste and very short-sighted.

Cheerio.

Re: Sydney Australia - Renting a hospital room for an hour.

Fox Studios?

Seriously though, I don't think you have a very high chance of being able to film at a real life hospital. Even if you do somehow find a hospital willing to accomodate you, you'll be required to jump through all sorts of hoops with insurance, permits, etc.

You could try contacting some local private practitioners such as GP's, dentists, radiologists, physiotherapists, etc, who might have hospital beds, operating theatres, or whatever else it is you need for your hospital scene, and who might be willing to let you do it after hours.

Your best budget bet though is to just build a very basic set yourself with a few props and clever camera angles, or to re-write the scene so it can take place elsewhere.

Re: Sydney Australia - Renting a hospital room for an hour.

Some Specialist Dr's have their own Operating Theatres which may be available on weekends. I know of one, but can't give you the name on here. And not sure if he'd allow it, but you can give it a go.

Aged care facilities also have hospital style beds in the "high level care" sections.

And they tend to have a room become available from time to time. :-)

Re: Sydney Australia - Renting a hospital room for an hour.

Not as silly a request as you might think.

There was a bit of a "to do" in central London a few years back when the local health board dicovered in it's end of year accounts that an entire ward, mothballed due to budget restrictions, had been rented out to a film company for "quite some time" to shoot a feature.

It wasn't so much the fact that it had happened, but that the "higher ups" didn't know about it till well after the event.

Check with the admin at your local medical board, there's bound to be a mothballed Base hospital (complete) or wards, scattered all over Sydney.

I know there's one (entire mothballed Base hospital) in Coffs Harbour, a tad out of the way for you though, probably.

CS

PS: From memory, in the London incident, the ward came complete with all fixtures, fittings, equipment and even, I think, supplies. Everything but patients!

Re: Sydney Australia - Renting a hospital room for an hour.

I looked at a list of closed hospitals in Sydney. Most of them have been converted into housing. A consequence of the housing bubble (the one that we dont have).

I also emailed out to a bunch of student organizations at Usyd - so lets see if that would pan out. The Nursing and Medicine Faculty have Clinical labs that would be perfect.

Allan Black September 16th, 2011 08:15 PM

Re: Sydney Australia - Renting a hospital room for an hour.

I assume your script says 'hospital table' because of how the person passed away, was it an exterior accident or happened in the hospital? Obviously it's not in an operating theatre, would a bed be more suitable?

It would seem to portray more drama on a 'hospital table', but that smacks of being in the morgue. The procedure for deceased persons is to move them to the morgue of a hospital asap, possibly awaiting an autopsy. Getting into a morgue will be a problem, getting out more so.

So I'd try a private hospital, asking about exterior shots to establish the scene, emphasising limited gear, lights, duration, on a weekday etc. along with a small sympathetic crew, a suitable patient male/female? your own flowers and a movie credit. Good luck.

btw looks like you started your thread in the wrong forum, on the day make sure you leave time to find the hospital :)

Cheers.

Yes a bed, as the person had drowned.

I did think of sneaking into the uni morgue, where the cadavers lie. But I doubt a small crew and cameras can be explained.

I am trying the training beds for the uni Nursing and Medical faculties. They are made to look like a hospital bed. And may work with the right angles.
