Motion Graphic Artist Needed in LA area
Hello all,
I'm working on a documentary in the LA area and we are looking for a Graphic Artist to do some motion graphics for a number of sequences in our project. We will be dealing with a great deal of WWII footage and images, as well as digital maps (which we need created) and thought I'd look on here to see if there are any around or any that could be recommended. Regards, -- John |
Re: Motion Graphic Artist Needed in LA area
John:
I can't help you with your quest to find a MGA, other than to refer you to my son-in-law, who can help you. His name is Michael Brodersen and his family owns Foto-Kem in Burbank. Call him at (818) 846-3101 and tell him his daddy-in-law says howdy. Well, okay... you don't have to say "howdy." Also, I have a friend in Malibu who is a very nice old guy that just happened to be a combat photographer in Europe during WWII. He served with the likes of Stanley Kubrick and Russ Meyer. He went on to produce/direct numerous films for Disney, one of which won an Oscar. If you'd like to hook up with him, email me at mtntvguy@yahoo.com. Best of luck with your gig! Charles |
Re: What is the best way to attract Actors for Independent Film?
Sorry I haven't checked back in a while, I've been busy with pre-production.
I really do appreciate all the input. Here's what I did to attract actors... "Money" :-) The "backend" deal is not very appealing to most actors. The risk is too great for no pay. I re-allocated funds from "locations, wardrobe, etc" and came up with a cash for the cast. It's not a lot, but it was enough to get an awesome group. I'm very pleased with the talent. Since my location fund is almost non-existent, I spent the last month on my hands and knees getting access to some decent locations. I've also requested that we use wardrobe (where we can) from the actors cloths. Everyone has been more than helpful. So, yes, pay your actors. The answer is money. :-) |
Re: What is the best way to attract Actors for Independent Film?
Sean I will remember that the next time an actor asks me to work on their dream project with the RED camera for nothing!
Why is it that actors and musicians seem to think they have a divine right to payment for their art where technicians and backroom people such as me are expected to work for lo or no pay! |
Classical Recording in Beijing, China 3rd/4th JULY!
I have a record company contact who needs to cover a recording session in Beijing with the China National Philharmonic Orchestra and Li Yundi.
They do not need a full crew, but someone to discreetly film during the recording sessions. The most important dates are 3rd and 4th July... Prefer 2 EX cams shot 50i but Z1's PAL would work too... Anyone from Hong Kong SE Asia, with visa's covered - this is too short notice to fix visas from the UK - Reputable MAJOR record company - I know all the protaganists personally, including the producer and engineer... Any bright ideas?? Thanks Paul |
Re: Classical Recording in Beijing, China 3rd/4th JULY!
This has now been re scheduled - just too tight timewise with everything...
Thanks anyway Paul:-) |

Re: What is the best way to attract Actors for Independent Film?
Don't know if anyone will read this, but I'll go ahead anyway, just in case.
I'm a former professional actor who's been for fortunate enough to appear on some of the more prestigious stages in the US, as well as on a number of cable series. Nowadays, I hide behind the camera, mainly because it pays better ;-). So, I hire and direct other actors. Having been in front of the camera, I can tell you that I rarely auditioned for any production company I didn't know. I did do that at one time; back when I was making the transition from stage to on-camera and felt I needed the experience. Unfortunately, that experience taught me to stay the @#$% away from unpaid gigs -- NOT because of the money, so much, but because unpaid work has a great probability of coming to absolutely nothing. More on that later. There was another reason to stay away: Directors who have grown up behind the camera tend to be lousy, lousy, lousy directors of actors. And I mean execrable. My experience is that the overwhelming majority are just terrible at this. They don't even know enough about acting to use the language trained actors speak, and when they DO give direction, it's often horrible and hackneyed. For example, I played a physician in one short, and there was this scene where I show up at the break room, and a little kid is buying a soft drink. I happen to know that this little kid's mother is dying, right? So, the directors says to me, "I want you to look at him, then shake your head and turn away." In other words, the director was saying, " I want you to look at him, then do something incredibly hackneyed that is known, in acting circles, as 'indication,' so you can look like a really, really bad actor." And that's just one example. I've got many more. But even if you do have a reasonably good experience, as I had with one film where I played the Metatron and choreographed the sword fighting scenes, it often happens that the people making the film never finish it. The aforementioned film is in the can, so to speak. It just needs editing and special effects, for cryin' out loud. And nothing ever came of my weeks of hard work. I've had other cases where a film was made and shown, and I never got a copy. So, now I don't bother. To many fly-by-nighters out there. Now, if it pays SOMETHING, then I figure the filmmaker has skin in the game, and something good might come to pass. But there's still that issue of horrible direction .... ;-) |

Illinois - Backup Videographer Needed
I have a wedding video shoot scheduled for September 10th and I am available, however my wife has a due date for our first born on September 9th.
I'm looking to see what my options could be for a backup person to show up on that day and help out. I would certainly pay the person to just show up, even if they don't need to actually do any work. Best case scenario - My wife gives birth before the 9th and I am able to work on the 10th, no backup needed. Possible Scenario - My wife hasn't given birth yet and I need this person to show up and shadow me throughout the day. Worst Case Scenario - My wife hasn't given birth yet and this person shows up and I have to leave, making this person the lead videographer. Anyone interested? We can discuss the amount of $ involved. Message me. |

HDCam and Beta Deck?
Hey all,
I'm getting ready to produce 26 episodes of a show for cable on the very cheap, and I need to write them out to HDCam for HD and either DigiBeta or Beta SP for SD. My hope is to be able to ship an MOV file to someone and have them write to the video to the tape. I'm in the LA area, but I suppose the person doing this could be anywhere, so long as the are professional and very reliable. Anyone fit the bill? Or does anyone have any recommendations in the LA area for post houses that could do it? Thanks! Barry |
Re: HDCam and Beta Deck?
bumping this...
The quotes I'm getting in LA are higher than I'd like. Anyone out there want to make money off the deck they have sitting around? |
Re: Venetian Police boat siren needed
You may have already heard this on YouTube :
YouTube - ‪Police boat on Grand Canal‬‏ |
Re: HDCam and Beta Deck?
Would it be better to rent each deck for a couple of days than pay someone else?
|
Re: HDCam and Beta Deck?
Thanks for the input, but it's 26 weekly episodes, so I can't really do that.
|
Re: Venetian Police boat siren needed
Well that YouTube clip sounds like a typical old style (1980's?) UK police/ambulance siren to me...but then I'm not your Director!

Looking to Rent Ki Pro in Chicago
I am needing to rent a Ki Pro in the Chicago area on Aug 9th-10th. Just wanted to see if any small companies wanted to make some extra cash before I went to VER. I could pick it up and drop it back off. My shoot is actually in Michigan City IN.

Camera Op--NC 8/13/11
We are shooting the bulk of a relatively low budget sizzle reel this Saturday, August 13, in the Mocksville area of North Carolina. I'm looking for a camera op to run my EX-3 as a second unit camera, so having some familiarity with the EX family or Sony HDV cameras would certainly help.
Most of the crew is working for lower than usual rates, but we can throw a couple hundred bucks in the pot for a reasonably experienced shooter...and we'll feed you as well! It's an outside shoot, so sunburn and heat stroke provided at no extra charge. Contact me if interested: Bill Ward, DP High Fire Productions, Inc Mooresville, NC muddfolks@aol.com 503 730-8368 |

Need visual effects work for two short clips
I directed a short film/music video for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence recently, I'm in the final stage of the edit. There are two clips of a few seconds each that need a little visual effects work. One isa no-brainer, painting out a hand that entered the frame accidentally. The other is creating the effect of fragments of a shattered dinner plate flying through the frame in the foreground. Fairly simple stuff but needs to be done elegantly and believably.
The project is being done pro bono for the cause, all help up to this point has been donated. If necessary I can pay a little for this work but it would be out of my pocket at this point. I would think that it shouldn't take too long for someone with decent skills. It would be very much appreciated. Please PM me if you think you can do this, hopefully this week as we are on a tight deadline. Thanks! |
Re: Need visual effects work for two short clips
If necessary, I can help out a bit with compensation, via PayPal.

South Coast UK Camera/lighting/sound - end September onwards
Looking for the following in the UK for a ten minute pilot to be shot in the New Forest, near Southampton.
1. Lighting/camera operator familiar with prosumer Canon (especially XH-A1S). Cameras provided, also basic lighting kit but would be interested in rates with and without gear. Lighting-wise I am looking for a clean 'real life' look, rather like The Office or Curb Your Enthusiasm. We have a basic jib, dolly and track, glidetrack etc. 2. Sound recordist. Not certain yet whether we will record dual sound or go straight into camera. We can provide mics but again would be interested in rates with and without gear. If there are economies of scale to be enjoyed by committing to multiple days (see below) then please state this (although I do need a single day rate for the pilot). Initially looking to shoot a ten minute pilot for the client in late September (one day shoot). If successful it will result in a commission for up to 30 (max) ten minute episodes over the following 12 - 14 months. We expect to be given a sensible production budget and expect to pay proper industry rates. Note the word 'sensible' - the client is a premium brand training provider but, like many of us, they have suffered badly in the recession, so they are extremely cost-conscious. They do know that they need to pay a sensible rate for quality, though. Sorry, but this is unlikely to be a job for someone looking for their first break. We will have lots to do, with tight deadlines and will expect shots to be set up with the minimum of experimenting! Subject wise, the videos will be short scenarios depicting activity in an office environment. The client wants them to be humourous and has written a pilot script which he thinks is funny (bless). It will need much work and a strong cast to drag every ounce of mirth out of this otherwise rather dry well ;-). On the subject of cast, this is not confirmed at this point but we will be using established professionals, all with television experience (no names, though). However this ends up, we do tend to have a bit of fun on our shoots so at the very least you should enjoy yourself! One tiny problem - I am about to go on holiday for two weeks and may not have much access to internet while I am away. I will be checking email at every opportunity though, but please accept my sincere apologies if I don't respond for a while. Other than this idiotic bit of poor timing, this is a serious request for crew! Look forward to hearing from you. Ian . . . ian@vit-media.com |

Seriously folks--I see amazing effects work being done all the time "just for fun". This is an opportunity to be part of a video for a very serious and important cause. The material is going to be used in a national campaign by the NCADV, plus the band already has existing distribution and exhibition from their previous videos. I'd love to be able to involve someone through DVI on this.
It's fair to say that beggars can't be choosers, however I need to maintain the believability of the shot so the work needs to be convincing, otherwise I'll go with the shots as is. If you are able to help out, please be confident that you can deliver fully realistic results. Thanks! Clip below: plate smash at :02, shot that requires fragments immediately following. |
