New to Geneva, Switzerland - Videographer/Editor/Producer

Hi There,

I have moved from Toronto to Geneva, Switzerland where I am now working as a freelance EFP/ENG Cameraman and Videographer/Editor/Producer. I've done everything from broadcast news to producing corporate videos.

I don't have too many contacts in Europe so if you happen to know anyone or know some productions houses, I could use the connections!

Also if you ever need anything in Switzerland or anywhere in Europe really (Geneva is very central, Spain, France, Germany, Italy are all an hour or two away) please contact me. I have my own gear (XDCam HD, Final Cut Pro, Lighting etc) and love to travel!

I can pay for this

Hello,

I've finished editing a piece on Vegas 7. I'm going to submit to festivals. A few are asking me to submit HDCAM tapes. I'm in the DC area. I was wondering if somebody would be interested in helping me to print those tapes? I'll buy the tapes. You tell me how much you think you need. If you're cheaper than DUART, why not use a member on this board.
Larry

Oh, I'm kind in a hurry, so if I don't here about somebody within, let's say 10 days I'll go ahead with DUART.

Are you in Miami with an XH-A1 and some lights?

Coming to Miami next week, looking to get some lights locally for a smallish job, and if you have an XH-A1, maybe hire you to shoot as well.

Don't know if this is the right board for this thread, but am looking for someone for July 27/28 in the Ft. Lauderdale area to shoot a chef preparing dishes...

Let me know if there is a better or other places to post this. Thanks.

Who wants to shoot my wedding?

After being engaged for something like 4 years, the fiance and I have finally set a date, booked a hall and have begun actually planning the wedding. Being a professional image maker (I should put that on my business card) I've taken charge of arranging the visual documentation of our big day. I'm happy to report that we've found a GREAT photographer that we're very excited to work with.

And then there's video. I'm amazed by the amount of crap out there. All of the photo studios we looked at offered video as well and they all sucked at it. The studio we're going with does acceptable video but nothing really great. If I don't find anything else, that will be the way to go but before I give in, I want to look for a place/person that does only video and does it REALLY well. So here I am.

The date: January 15, 2011 (18 months from yesterday so there's still time)
The place: Reception in Mineola, Long Island (NY). Ceremony TBD but not far from that.

If anyone wants to submit themselves for consideration or has any recommendations for quality videographers in my neck of the woods, reply here or PM me.

Thanks very much!

~~Dave

Try Craigslist, but don't be one of those cheap #%@% by offering $8/hour or some ridiculously low compensation. Pay people what YOU would want to be paid. You'll get better help that way.

Jeff Nelson July 16th, 2009 06:02 PM

Craigslist, hadn't thought of that, good idea. Actually looking more to rent lights than a cam and operator. Bringing 3 cameras and my wife and son can probably do a decent job. Will look around. Thanks.

Video Clips Needed

We are putting together a pilot and I need video clips of animal removals specifically from south FL but will accept from other areas, also.

We do not pay for clips but we will make mention of where the clip came from.

If you can assist us in getting these clips, we'll certainly be loyal and remember you when we hire for this project.

If you have any interest in working with us on this, please let us know.

Thank you.
Lisa

Looking to work with team in Sacramento area to learn with

Hey all,

I am moving to Sacramento area mid August time frame. I'd really like to try to learn a bit more post production work, as well as either watch, or even help on taking video for corporate events, weddings, etc. I am not asking for compensation but wouldn't turn it down if my help/work is of value. I'd rather accept compensation in the way of time with someone to learn the ropes. Ideally I'd like to look at doing this part time initially for pay (after I learn a bit), but as I don't have the right gear or the money to get it just yet, being able to participate with someone and learn while using their gear would be most helpful.

I do have a solid understanding of video cameras, their technical aspects, as well as a long background of computers including doing some editing with Premiere. I'd love to learn more about color correcting shots, as well as how to best set up cameras for certain events including using lighting and such.

Thank you.

That's kind of far in advance- I usually only book 1 calendar year in advance. However the date is available.

Dave Dodds July 20th, 2009 07:42 PM

I know it's very far but I like to get things done.

Also, budget is not the most important thing. And I expect that sort of mentality from the person I end up going with. I know we do what we do to make a living, but at the same time, I want someone who thinks the most important thing is that we get a beautiful documentation of our special day. Money talk comes last, just before we sign the deal. I will say though, that if anyone charges anything close to the price of a new car, don't bother.

Also, ideally we'd like to use someone in/around NYC - or considers western Long Island a "local" job. There have been a number of private responses from people who have phenomenal portfolios but are about as far from NY as you can get. I appreciate the interest but it's just not feasible.

Thanks for all of the responses so far.

~~Dave

Any shoot or distance is feasible if you have money. If not, you are on a "budget".

Yes, I am "on a budget." That is, I don't have a limitless amount of money at my disposal for this. I never said I did. If anyone on here is in that sort of a position where they just want to throw as much money as possible somewhere, let me know. I'd love to work for you.

The locale thing is just a matter of being wise with my money. After all, this wedding is the start of my life with someone and I've got to continue building it. I mean, if someone in the UK quotes me $5000 plus travel for a great package and I find a comparable package/quality locally for $5000 (no travel needed), what's the smart move?

I'd say it depends on how good they are.

Dave Dodds July 21st, 2009 02:15 PM

Absolutely. But if they were of a comparable quality and style, it makes more sense to go local, no?

I'm just saying, I am willing to make this an investment - heck it'll be one of the most important days of my life. But I want to make it a wise one and only spend as much as I need to.

Paul R Johnson July 21st, 2009 02:21 PM

Dave - I'm really confused now. Money isn't important, but there is a budget, but then you mention two $5000 deals, but then suggest the smart move is to take the no travel cost option?

Surely, the wedding is very important to you as a prospective bridegroom. Video style and quality is important as a video professional. You're more aware than the usual wedding client how much things cost vs the small differences extra money brings.

In your position, I'd want to see other people's work for varying budgets. For $X I can do this, or for $Y I can do this. People can show you the work and then you can decide. I suspect people just want to know if you are thinking $500 or $5000, that's all.

If it was me, I'd not want somebody elses edit - I'd always find things I didn't like, so I'd spend my entire budget on aquisition, and then do the edit myself, at my convenience in my style.

Simply engage shooters, who work on your instructions of what to shoot. Much better use of budget, and what you do with it is up to you. They shoot and just hand the media to you - end of job. I rarely am comfortable with finished products from other people.

Boston Videographer who will travel

Hi,

Congratualtions on your upcoming wedding. I got married 3 weeks ago and it was great!

I have friends that live in NY and would be willing to travel for your wedding. Check out my work at Angelina Video Productions - Weddings and Events serving Danvers, Massachusetts - New Hampshire - Rhode Island - Maine. I film in both SD and HD.

I guess I'm being a big butthead about this. I've been trying to get across - without divulging any figures - the idea that I'm not looking to spend a fortune but I am willing to pay for quality. Based on packages I've reviewed from various vendors, I think it'd be fair to expect to spend $2000-4000 on something really good. I hope that clears things up.

Also, I am looking for the full deal. While I do edit, I'm more of a shooter and I don't think I'd have the patience to do a good enough job on the video edit.

Sorry if I've been a pain - just a bit stressed trying to make sure I do the best thing for our wedding. Thank you everyone for the great responses and for the advice - and of course your patience. Keep 'em coming.

~~Dave

Raymond Tsang July 21st, 2009 06:15 PM

Dave,

Having recently been married, I can understand what you're going through. There's nothing butthead about it! We live in LA and spent months looking for the "right" videographer. One thing we found was that for a certain figure, say $4000, we could find locals to shoot our wedding or an equivalent studio from out of state. In this economy, the b&g have plenty of negotiating leverage (gasp).

In the end, we went with StillMotion and after our SDE was shown, it was obvious that we had made the right choice (for us, as a couple). Being in NY though, I would think there's a whole range of talent open to you. But cost of living is high so that's obviously factored into the local pricing. Good luck with the search.
