New project settings for Canon XH-A1 footage
 

What settings to use in Edius 4.0 when capturing HDV footage from a new Canon XH-A1 camera? I have a dual woodcrest processor/dual core setup with several G-raid drives for storage...
The camera seems to record at 1920 x 1080 and feed it out via the firewire port to Edius at 1440x1080... not sure what the proper project settings would be in edius 4.0...

Several options in the dialog box:
OHCI Full HD 1080/59.94 I (1920 x1080) 29.97 top field first 48/16 bit
HDCAM/HDV 1080/59.94i (1440x1080) 29.97 top field first, 48/16
HDV 1080/29.97p (1440x1080) 29.97 progressive 48/16bit

I believe I should use the third setting??

You'll find that your camcorder has 1920x1080 sensors and that it records 1440x1080 (the HDV standard) to tape.

If you're recording in 60i mode, then the second option (59.94i) is appropriate. Your camera has "30F" mode. Are you using that? If so, then I believe 29.97p would be appropriate.

Were are you located, I'm In AZ using two A-1's and Edius, been so for a little over a month. I'll check my setting and get back with you, ps, I'm currently using Roxio Creator 9 for my DVD's burned about 30 costers. still trying to get the best output from Edius to Roxio, what DVD app are you using, I plan on upgrading to HD software and burner in the near future..Gary

I export out of Edius to procoder express to MPEG-2 program stream (.m2p) using 2 pass VBR. I then use Adobe Encore 2 to create the DVD. The quality is awesome. I also have (2) A1's and a HV20. I shoot and edit all my video in HDV using HDCAM/HDV 1080/59.94i ((1440x1080) 29.97 top field first, 48/16).
I have not shot in 24F mode yet but I do not believe edius supports that yet - maybe 4.5 will. Maybe someone has a solution?

Hi Tom, I just read your post, I'm also shooting A-1's, editing in edius, I've burned a lot of poor quality DVD's, I'm using Roxio Creator 9 to author and burn, (using various bit rates 6-8) I'm wonering if the "weak link" is roxio, your apparently happy with encore, will their latest release do HD etc. Gary

can you tell me if I have a timeline 1 hours in HDV how long would it have to encode with procoder to get he final m2p file? Also have you try any short 24f edit with edius yet? I love to shoot with 24f because that will let me take advantage of the lowlight situation. Focusing will not a problem for me I'm doing all manual focus anyway.

I haven't worked with the 24F yet. Encoder times vary according to processor speed. I have a Quad core 2.66 and it takes about 50min.
