HDV wiki?
 

I heard someone talk of starting a DV wiki but what about a HDV wiki? We could know more through independant research and everything HDV! It would be great!

In Canadian it might mean "humble aboriginal dwelling" ???

A Wiki is a collaborative collection of information.

It differs from a forum in that it is not based on posting questions and answers based on time.

Instead, for example, on a Wiki one person may post an explaination of "HDV interlacing". This article can then be edited and improved by others. In a forum like DVinfo, people cannot edit other's posts, only respond in another post with corrections. Wikis are designed to be a cleaner presentation of collective information that is constantly improving.

The biggest wiki style site I know of is www.wikipedia.org . They do have a sparse page for HDV at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDV . However, WikiPedia has great pages describing optics, focal length, depth of field, film techniqes, and other useful information, see here:

We could use wikipedia links for common words like Focal_length etc. There are already good explanations for those standard terms in WIKIPEDIA.

A WIKI is a self/user maintained website/information store/faq. No direct discussion happens there, but solutions found maybe posted there and links to important threads to e.g. this board could be made.

It's an addon - no competition to this board.

Anybody interrested can register there. Please use your real name (like here) and a valid email adress (in case of problems). Any logged in person can edit nearly everything.

HDV Wiki as a DVinfo community tool?
 

Hi Chris, I'm new to the board (at posting - been reading for several months now). Thanks again for the great resources available through DVinfo.

Regarding an HDV wiki, If you want to create a wiki as part of DVinfo.net, there are several great wiki open-source server software packages. One good one is available at http://wikipedia.sourceforge.net/ ...

There is no reason to have only one wiki out there! The more collaborative resources for digital filmmaking, the better.

I'm not opposed to adding a wiki for HDV or DV or anything else here at DV Info Net (or its sub-sites). The only thing that bothers me about the wiki process is that *anyone* can make changes to it -- including certain nay-sayers who for whatever reasons are compelled wage their self-serving propaganda campaigns against this or that format. If there was a way to weed out these trolls and their hidden agendas, then I'd have more support for it. Limiting the ability to add or change content to only those dedicated members whom we know we can trust would be one such agreeable compromise as far as I'm concerned.

Meanwhile I'm still convinced that individual FAQ sections for each of our areas, especially including HDV, would be just as beneficial as a wiki if not more so. All it takes is a dedicated community effort to assemble one.

You are right here. I'm thinking of a FAQ as a starting point. No message should be copied. Duplication of content, while illegal (copyright) or immoral (competition) is useless too. If this WIKI works, maybe new articles/reviews are created there later...

The answer to anyone can edit: I immediatly switched from media-wiki (wiki-pedia) to moinmoin, beacause you need to be logged in.
Furthermore any author can lock their pages, so noone else can edit them. Admins can revert to any version anytime. If the WIKI gets too large it may be a problem, but not one that other sites have not solved yet...
