Update about the total members count...

For anyone who is following the number of registered members here at DV Info Net, you may have noticed that just recently it was over 20,000 but now it's suddenly down to 19,600. That's because we're clearing out some inactive accounts belonging to folks who haven't visted in awhile with post counts of zero. You'll see our total members count waver up and down a little over the next several months as this process of clearing out inactive accounts will continue. Thanks,

Mike Teutsch October 27th, 2005 08:30 AM

Great!

Chris,

Just adds integrity and credibility to the forum. I applaud your honesty in the way this forum is run and maintained!

Kinda like the new look too! Miss the HOME button though!?!?!? Good Luck!

Chris, I'm sure this is an abused question..but is there a possibility of jpg (embedded) attachments in the forum's future?

Chris Hurd October 27th, 2005 11:56 AM

Hi Dennis, I prefer to keep inline attachments out of the board, but we do have the Gallery feature (see link in nav bar above)... anybody who wants to post images that are relevant to the discussions here is elcome to contact me for upload privs. Hope this helps,

Anhar Miah October 28th, 2005 06:00 AM

Chris Just out of wonder, is there a way to know which "number" you are, thanks :) (I know its not really important, just a curiousty that needs flattening)

Will my split personalities count as two?

Chris Hurd October 28th, 2005 09:18 AM

Anhar -- mouse over your name on the left hand side, and you should see (depending on which browser you're using) something like dvinfo.net/conf/member.php?u=7096 -- that's your dog tag.

Steven -- Split personalities each count as half. Quadrophenics count 1/4 each.

At DV Info Net, you're not just a number! Welcome back, Member #7096.

This is neat! On my browser I had to right click on my name and hit properties. By the way, you are #3 Chris! This is your place, who beat you in the web people? Thanks Chris.

Hey, what about the Seven Faces of Eve? Ok, that's 100 divided by 7, oh never mind!

User number 1 was a test account which has long since been deleted. User number 2 is our own Jeff Kramer, he's our webmaster who stokes the fires which keep the server chugging along. Most of the other single-digit member numbers were other tests and/or deleted accounts, but number 9 is still with us today... contributor Francesco Marano. He joined on Sep. 7th, 2001 (one of the very few pre-9/11 members we have), and has visited again just today. In fact I oughta throw him some swag for that.

Once again, clearing out some dead accounts... that's why the Total Members number will continue to waver around 20,000 plus or minus for awhile. I'm ditching a few hundred at a time, so don't be alarmed if you see an occasional drop in our membership. Just cleaning out the skeletons is all...

Steven Davis November 21st, 2005 02:29 PM

I'm still here.

And by the way, can the number 1# postion be purchased. I'm asking for a friend, my ego has nothing to do with it. :}

Chris Hurd November 21st, 2005 02:41 PM

Sure. Make me an offer. Tell your friend the highest post count can be bought as well. Just let me know what it's worth to you... er, your friend rather.

Chris Hurd December 4th, 2005 12:51 PM

Once again... just nuked about 600 dead accounts, pruning out those who have not visited in over 1,000 days (going back to 2002 to 2003).

Heath McKnight December 4th, 2005 01:28 PM

10 bucks to have 13000 posts!

Jipsi Kinnear January 24th, 2006 03:12 AM

Hey Chris as a Firefox user how does one go about seeing which member number they are?

Rob Lohman January 24th, 2006 10:08 AM

Click on the users name, a drop down list should appear as well as a hyperlink below in the status bar.
It ends with ?u=xxxx where xxxx is your/the user number, I'm 189, you are 11558

Jipsi Kinnear January 30th, 2006 02:21 AM

Thanks Rob.

Chris Hurd February 10th, 2006 06:02 PM

Update, wiped out another 800 or so dead accounts (those with zero posts and no visits since 2004).

Chris Hurd March 5th, 2006 01:45 PM

Took out another 730 or so dead accounts (those with zero posts and no visits since March 2004). This will happen about every month or so. Trying to flush out unused accounts while keeping our total membership around the 20,000 mark.

James Emory March 5th, 2006 02:01 PM

I'm still waiting on my first residuals check for all of the posts and visits in my threads.

http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showpost....&postcount=515

Graham Bernard March 5th, 2006 02:52 PM

Does anybody else find this thread a wee bit "gruesome"? It's a like Quincy meets CSI. I've now got this image of that argumentative Coroner trying to rile that sunglassed Horatio into some kinda of action!

But I must say I do feel a bit trimmer around the middle now - kinda slimmed down! "Feel the Burn!"

Good work Chris!

Ah! Chris is there a simple way I can de-attach myself from threads that haven't been added to for say 12 months?

Grazie

Chris Hurd March 12th, 2006 01:01 PM

In this week's episode of "Elimidate," about 380 dead accounts have been excized, temporarily dropping us to just below the 20k mark. I have no doubt we'll have that number back up where it was pretty soon though.

Graham, you can't unsubscribe from some old threads? Try the "Controls" link at top right.

James Emory March 12th, 2006 03:28 PM

Wouldn't that be Elimipost or Elimithread?

Graham Bernard March 13th, 2006 08:24 AM

Chris, yes the Controls, that's exactly what I did to see that I have something like 815 threads over 27 pages???!?!? Seesshhh....

I want to able to say de-attach ( guess that would be detach then? Lol! )myself from the ones, say, that are over 6 months old? Yes? Easily without needing to have to go through each and everyone?

Regards,

Grazie

Chris Hurd March 13th, 2006 08:51 AM

*gulp* Er, let me get back to you on that one Graham!

Chris Hurd April 18th, 2006 08:10 PM

Flushed another 1,000 dead accounts today (those with zero posts and no visits in the past 18 months or so). This is a continuous process, designed to keep our total members count around the 20,000 mark.

What can I say, it's an itchy trigger finger.

Do you go "Muwhwahaaaaa!!!!" as you're doing this. Because there is therapy for that. :}

Actually I go "gee, why did these people register and never bother to post anything." Trying to improve the site is my therapy for that!

It's a Texas thing. We all have itchy trigger fingers.

As someone who registered a while ago and not really posted much...I can answer as saying I would like to add something intelligent to say, but have not come up with anything yet. Eventually maybe I will.

Chris Hurd April 28th, 2006 10:12 PM

Thanks Randy, I'm sure you will. We've had problems in the past with certain folks posting an awful lot but not actually having something intelligent to say. Heh.

To get post numbers up, I'm sure.

Larry Price April 29th, 2006 04:42 AM

'Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to post something and remove all doubt!

I have nothing meaningful to contribute yet, but registered in anticipation of the day when I actually know enough to express an intelligent opinion. Until then, I'll lurk, read, and most importantly, LEARN! My thanks to everyone who generously shares their knowledge and experience in these threads.

Aloha,

LVP

Chris Hurd April 29th, 2006 06:03 AM

Much appreciated, Larry. To clarify for everyone, these mass exterminations which take place from time to time involve not only those with zero posts but also zero visits within a certain time frame (like say, 18 months or more). I consider a person who does not post but visits regularly to be an active member, and a potential contributor. We're getting rid of only the completely dead accounts, that is those with zero posts plus zero visits. The visits being the primary determining factor.

Walter J Walsh April 29th, 2006 07:57 AM

"I consider a person who does not post but visits regularly to be an active member, and a potential contributor. "

Well that takes some of the pressure off. I visit this site every day because I find it not only very informative but also entertaining. But I'm pretty sure I will never have any thing very intelligent or informative to offer. Much like this post.

So in the future when any one sees one of my posts feel free to groan not him again and then disregard it.

I would be one of those people!

Boyd Ostroff April 29th, 2006 08:13 AM

Welcome to DVinfo guys. See, it's not hard to start contributing :-)

Don't be shy either. Of course there's not point to posting if you have nothing to say, but feel free to ask questions. They are often the seeds which grow into good threads that can help others who are just starting out. Then as you gain some experience your new-found knowledge can benefit people who are wrestling with the same problems.
