New April `09 Site Design

Hey everybody, as you've undoubtedly noticed we've rolled out a new site design and revamped content section. If you have any questions or comments, please post here. Thanks!

Bradley Ouellette April 20th, 2009 03:59 PM

When will the VIDEO section be setup, and what will it encompass?
Where is the market place on the forums? It has disappeared for me.

Bill Busby April 20th, 2009 04:35 PM

It's soooo purdy! :)

James McBoyle April 21st, 2009 11:26 AM

The new look is very nice! Well done to everyone, I know this must have taken a lot of hard work.

Ethan Cooper April 22nd, 2009 09:34 AM

The new look is really nice and more importantly everything seems to be working fine. Good job guys, thanks again for what you do for all of us. Forums like these are an extremely valuable resource.

Today around 8:30 am local time, I responded to two different posts. One in the Sony EX-XDCAM forum and the second in the XDCAM-HD forum. Both threads in these forums have since disappeared. Very basic topics, nothing controversial. Then I noticed there was a time discrepancy of threads depending on whether I went directly to the a sub-forum or if went directly to the main forum and then to the sub-forum. The same sub-forum showed different threads depending on how I accessed them.

If the admins have censored the two threads, one relating to NAB P2/SxS memory and second to XDCAM Transfer tutorials ... well so be it. Otherwise, this board is not working consistently as it has in the past.

Currently I'm not getting email notifications and my posts are not showing up in New Posts.

Cheers.

Chris Hurd April 24th, 2009 06:48 PM

We're still tweaking it and ironing out the bugs... thanks for your patience, and your feedback.

Allan Black April 24th, 2009 07:39 PM

Instant email notification now works Chris. That was quick :)

Cheers.

Chris Hurd April 24th, 2009 09:45 PM

Thank Jenn, not me (she's that person behind the curtain...).

Allan Black April 24th, 2009 09:58 PM

Thanks Jenn, the last one came in so fast it nearly knocked me over.

Cheers.

I saw a similar problem.
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/panasonic...announced.html

My last post got deleted and than reappeared and right after someone commented on my post, it disappeared again along with the poster who quoted me.

What gives?

A.
A moderator cant make up their mind.

B.
A moderator decides to delete my post while another one found no problem with it and decided to make it reappear and when the original moderator saw that it came back, he deleted it again.

C.
It’s the bugs from the upgrade that’s being ironed out.

I think the answer is C, correct?

Chris Hurd April 26th, 2009 08:59 AM

The answer is C. Some posts were trying to go where there was nowhere to go. It was a computer glitch, not a human one.

Unfortunately our recent server re-config left a bit of a bloody wake, but I think those issues are entirely smoothed out now.

Love the new site design...but one thing missing....

Like many others, I really like the new site design, but one big thing is missing for me.

I'm missing the list of other members on line.

It's subjective and not life threatening, I know, but seeing the names of others online when I log on has always given me a sense of being a part of a real community...and I for one miss it.

Just knowing that you are part of a great collection of fellow enthusiasts/professionals/hobbyists from all around the globe is kinda reassuring....particularly when you are struggling with one challenge or another and need a helping hand.

Pete Bauer April 26th, 2009 01:53 PM

It's on the bottom of the home page now, rather than the top.

Sean Walsh April 26th, 2009 04:05 PM

Thanks Pete,

My excuse is that I've just driven 17 hours straight back from SW France and therefore my powers of observation aren't quite what they should be....

I think Sherlock Holmes and Columbo can rest easy in their beds, knowing I won't be replacing them anytime soon!

Pete Bauer April 26th, 2009 07:22 PM

Perfectly understandable. When I lived on that side of The Pond, driving across France always managed to leave me worse for wear in one manner or another.

New Design

Very nice indeed. Maybe I am imagining it but the few impressions I got is that the the new site loads up quicker and feels somewhat smoother to the eyes.

Well done! Thank you.

The site re-vamp looks really great. Thanks to Chris and all the guys that contribute so much here. This is an incredible resource, and now it more "looks the part." Congrats!
(I don't think sponsors and advertisers will mind if they have to pony up a few extra bucks, either; I hope I'm on the list when subscriptions are offered) good idea, Chris.

Bryan Cantwell April 30th, 2009 08:01 PM

I'm actually going the other way on this one...

While I am FULLY AWARE of the work that goes into this site, and MORE THAN THANKFUL to the guys that run it, I think this re-vamp detracts from the sense of community I felt when coming to the site.

It looks so commercial, I actually checked the address bar of my browser to see if i'd been redirected to a parasite web page...

But, people seem to like it, so more power to ya! ;) It's not like I'd leave over it! Just my personal opinion (and we know about those, right?)

ETA - I didn't realize i hadn't actually posted on this forum yet!! I've been reading this forum for a couple of months now, I have no idea how I managed to make my first post in this thread!

Mike Demmers April 30th, 2009 10:39 PM

It's a very well crafted redesign. It looks good, but has not sacrificed functionality and the user experience for cuteness.

The ad placement is reasonable, yet effective.

Contrast this with some of the competition with nearly unreadable text, truly obnoxious ads, and arcane organization.

I think the 'Real Names' approach is useful in keeping the S/N ratio high, too.

Well done.

The title banner does not stretch across the full width of the page. Looks a bit "off" to my eyes. Functionality is good though.

Chris Hurd May 1st, 2009 06:45 AM

We kept the header the same fixed width as the article pages (for example see NAB2009 Stabilizer Wrap-Up DV Info Net), which was a bit of a design trade-off. Nothing is permanent though... it's all changeable.
