Actually, not necessarily, and you can edit the descriptions. It's all about how and where you place the brackets and = signs in your links. If you just paste in the address, such as "http://www,dvinfo,net/" (I've replaced the periods with commas so the preceding text doesn't format as a link), it looks like this: Digital Video News, Reviews and Forums at DVInfo.net, which is the page description. When you paste that link, it goes onto your post looking like this: [url=http://www,dvinfo,net/] (again with commas here where the periods should be).
But if you move the brackets around and add some text, so it looks like this [url=http://www,dvinfo,net/]the coolest forums ever[\url] (I've reversed the final slash before the final url in the brackets so it won't go as an actual link) it comes out like this: the coolest forums ever. And if you "Go Advanced," you can select the text (not by clicking the whole word, unfortunately; that still doesn't work) and by using CTRL-I or CTRL-B, you can add italics or bold. If you edit your post after submitting, you can usually just change the text in the link. |
Adam, thanks. This is really good to know. A couple of things. I don't see a go advanced option. Can you please point that out to me? And with the control+ keystrokes work with a Mac?
|
Not a Mac user so I'm useless in that regard. If there isn't a crtl key equivalent, all that really does is surround any selected text with [i] and [\i] for italic, and [b] and [\b] for bold, again reversing the slashes so they'll be visible to you in this post. Use the forward slashes.
In order to see the Go Advanced option, you first have to submit, then hit Edit. On the Edit page the Advanced option should become visible, at least in IE. |
Got it. Don't see it working on the Mac. Thanks again, Adam.
|
See edited post #163 for Mac workaround.
|
Of course. Thanks.
<----------------slapping forehead. |
Not sure which AD is doing it. this just started today. I use firefox btw. Threads are reloading over and over. Seems to be related to a flash AD at the bottom of the screen but I can't be sure. When it happens my browser doesn't seem to update the new posts for each thread. I have to hit reload...
strange. |
We've been fiddling with some options a bit in order to optimize page load speed. I think I know which option would require some folks to hit reload to see new posts and I've switched it back, so things should be 'normal' again.
|
Ok, I'm replying to you as a test. I noticed it happens pretty severe after I post... I had to hit repload to see your post btw. :)
EDIT: that worked better, although the AD at the bottom causes the whole page to shift up when it finally loads. Just saying. :) Thanks for helping either way! |
DVinfo on slow mo?
The last 36 hours, DVinfo either won't load a page at all or takes three minutes to do so, sometimes even giving IE8 enough excuse to declare the link down.
Anyone else experiencing this? None of my other on - line sites are exhibiting the same bahaviour, and I've done all the usual "fix the link" tasks such as removing cookies etc. Win XP, btw. Interesting, even the typer is slow, any chance a bug has piggy backed in here? And, despite the fact that I loaded this page over 10 minutes ago, it's still showing the page as not fully downloaded. CS |
Working fine here in the US; been on it all day yesterday.
Win 7, the latest IE. Chrome even faster. |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Is it just me, or is the forum server slow again?
All other Internet connections are fine, Also, dvinfo.net is usually also quite fast, too - but not today... Piotr |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
I had a lot of problems the last day or so (and often could not get on DVinfo at all despite razor fast connection to all other websites).
I was even on the verge of emailing Chris thinking that my IP address had some how been (erronously) blocked!!!! Seems OK now through - maybe we shoulod blame it on the huge CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) the sun just threw our way! |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
This may have been mentioned and I missed it here (I did skim through all the pages) but I always see only a reply button on the last post of any page (not just the last post in a thread), never a reply-with-quote button. The multi-quote is there but not the reply-with-quote. I did figure out that you just use multi-quote with the reply button, but it seems strange that there is a difference. Is this normal or a bug?

Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Hi Alen, it's completely intentional. The idea is to prevent the needless quoting of an immediately preceding post. Point being, since the preceding post comes right before, there's seldom any real need to quote it -- because it's already in plain view and therefore easy to reference. We set it up this way after getting a number of complaints about quoted posts cluttering up the flow of a thread... it's a pain to have to read a string of immediate quotes, it's like having to read everything twice, when there's no real reason or need for it.
If you find yourself wanting to reference one part of a longer immediately preceding post, the workaround is to click the multi-quote button on that post and then hit reply -- and then pare down the quoted section to just the relevant lines. It's pretty easy to do. The main thing though is that we have cut down tremendously on the amount of useless quotes simply by making it less easy to needlessly quote an immediately preceding post. Hope this helps, |

Ha. Thanks for understanding, Alen!

Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Am I the only one that couldn't access the site since last night at midnight? I'm glad things are back to normal, I thought my browser had been hijacked. I couldn't access any dvinfonet pages.
|
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Nope - I couldn't access it all morning either. Looked like the domain hadn't been re-registered...
Seems to be working fine now though. |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
The problem was the same here in UK earlier today, links were directed to a domain host holding page, but it now seems to be back on track. Thank goodness, how much poorer would life be without DVinfo?
|
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Same here. Got a "Coming soon" parking page from last evening about 11:30EST till just a few minutes ago.
|
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
That was a name server switch that went awry, sorry about the DNS craziness.
Now to address the email issue... thanks a ton for your patience, loyalty and understanding. |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Whew... I was also re-directed to an under construction site for the past half day, thought it was my browser being hacked, got to my other computer at work and dvinfo comes up fine now.
|
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Me too. Went through a lot of gyrations, including running malware scans and checking from a Linux based computer. Just got back on here while I was on the phone with my ISP and was about to try working on my router..
I have a question about this at Adobe's PPro formum and I post Chris's reply above. Good to know it was not me. |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
I am glad to see that dvinfo.net is up and running again! Last night, it pointed to one of those generic web page one would see when the intended web site "closed its doors".
What happened?!?!? Anyway. . . it doesn't matter what happened. What matters is that dvinfo.net is up again. Now I can resume lurking about and learning what I need to learn about video production. Thank you, Chris Hurd, for keeping this WONDERFUL web site up and running. It meets the needs of many people (like myself) seeking information. . . and sharing information. Ed |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Wow, like so many of us, the idea of this site being unavailable is unthinkable. I'm so glad things are back, again!
|
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Welcome back DVINFO...been missing you all day..I thought there was something wrong with my computer or internet...it was like a nightmare...I was doing some editing video and every 10 minutes checked for Dvinfo and it was'nt there...so glad you are back...:-)

Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
For me it was a genuine "WTF" moment this morning...
and I hardly ever use that abbreviation very much at all. It might be worth pointing out that DVi is constantly backed up, with server images made on a daily and weekly basis. This time it was just a DNS glitch, but if the forum database ever explodes for some reason, we can get it back pretty easily with a minimal loss of data. We've been around for more than ten years and we're not going away anytime soon, that's for sure. |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
It's pretty funny, I've been like a coal miner lately, mining the data the past few days for answers to questions I have on the usual: lighting, audio, business, vegas, the new Canon camera I can't afford... it's kind of like a daily routine mixed in with e-mail, espn.com, etc. and then suddenly dvinfo wasn't there, wasn't even available... it was like reaching for the first cup of coffee in the morning and the cup was empty, or walking down a staircase and having the handrail disappear... frightening....

Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
I felt the same way Bill. I was completely out of sorts when I couldn't check in, it was weird and scary.
|
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
I felt like someone had chopped off a limb, I really didn't know what to do when I couldn't start my day the DVinfo way!
|
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
It was interesting that google was still indexing the site so I figured it was a DNS issue.
Glad it all got straightened out. |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
I guessed that the server was being worked on when the email notifications started to come through, for the first time in months, even though the site was not appearing.
It's good to have them working again! |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Having problems on iPad for about a week; finally got around to a restart, which I thought would fix it, but it didn't.
When using iPad Safari, current version from iOS 6.1.3, it requires a double-click on the back button to go to the previous page. If I display the recent history by holding the back button, it shows two entries for every page I've visited. This affects dvinfo.net/forum only, and only on safari/iPad. Other sites unaffected, Chrome on iPad unaffected. Please feel free to contact me via PM if I can help further or test any fixes. |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Now working fine!
|
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
I'll see if I can duplicate the issue anyway!

Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Hi Chris
Since the move to the new server there has been a change in the forum behaviour that I am experiencing. I don't know if it is affecting others. When I use the "New Posts" button everything works as before and I see a list of new posts and others which I have not changed since my last visit but still contain unread posts. When I go to one of these threads and read it and then return to the "New Posts" page using the back arrow, the old server would then take the thread heading from bold to plain type to show it had been read. The new server is not doing this. Cheers Tim |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Howdy Tim,
What if you don't use the back arrow, but instead click the New Post link again? I can make this easier by duplicating that row of links that contains "New Posts" down here at the bottom of the page... will get to work on that. Edit: Okay, so now there's a "New Posts" link at the bottom of every page (including this page); it's in the center of the page in between the previous post and next post links, just below "You are here" the breadcrumb nav and above one of the medium rectangle banner ads... that should save you from having to scroll back up to the top for New Posts. |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
My computer had a catastrophic stasis epilepsis episode about two years ago and I reset the clock wrong. After re-installing stuff I discovered the error. I elected not to change it and go through the torment of again reinstalling and re-registering softwares which will slap you every which way to heaven or hell for very little reason other than they can.
So Chris. It is all my fault. My computer clock is set to a different time and date and the collective of the rest of the world's computery thinks itself and the atomic reference clocks to be wrong. Whatever, the three clicks back after re-logging in when a longwinded forum response being composed times out, to bring up the text again for posting, still works. Site wrangling has to be right up there with a whole host of minor miracles that I cannot comprehend which demand respect. |
Re: Any site / server problems -- post here.
Hi Chris
If I click "New Posts" again, it will refresh the links and the one I have visited will disappear. I use the back arrow so I see which of all the overnight posts I have visited. Sometimes after visiting all the threads which interest me, I will then go back into a visited thread and post a reply. It is for that reason I liked the previous format of the change from bold to plain text. It is not a big deal, I can live without it. Cheers Tim |
