Who has started?

Just wondering, with the extended time limit, who is an eager beaver and has started shooting already?

Meryem Ersoz December 1st, 2007 12:49 PM

started?? that's a good one...i'm still contemplating signing up!

Jim Montgomery December 1st, 2007 01:00 PM

Well ..... Did some storyboarding, wrote the script, shot scene 3 ( the one that needs the effects work), just about to render that scene when I realized that the main character had not done his green screen shoot yet, so put that on hold. Gaffer (wife) is finishing the set ups now.........

So ya I think I started ;)

Jim

Mike Teutsch December 1st, 2007 04:34 PM

Just got home from Alabama an hour ago and know even know the theme yet! :)

Mike

Kris Holodak December 1st, 2007 08:02 PM

depends on your definition of "started"

Shooting? No. But I have been exchanging emails with my writing team trying to come up with story ideas and a script. It was about as much progress as I was expecting so far, so I'll take it.

Mugurel Dragusin December 1st, 2007 08:04 PM

Lorinda Norton December 1st, 2007 09:25 PM

This might be the first time I’ve had a script written by the first night of the Challenge, so even though I’m not shooting yet, I'm feeling like an eager beaver. Or is it Beaver Cleaver?

Got two out of three actors and a location today. Walking up to a stranger and asking to use his property is scary, but by golly, it can pay off! Turned out the guy sort of knew me and I sort of knew him. Whew. Now if it'll just warm up a bit we'll be in business...

Fredrik-Larsson December 2nd, 2007 08:19 AM

Well, yesterday I got drunk so I kind of started.. you know.. searched for inspiration... oh crap.. I thought the theme was "single malt Scotch"... damn.. now I have to start all over again... ;)

Edward Slonaker December 2nd, 2007 10:43 AM

Started?

ummm.....started what?

Philip Boyer December 3rd, 2007 07:53 AM

Storyboard? Actors? Green Screen? Writing Teams? What have I gotten myself into? I'm just hoping my kids are available. If this post counts, then yes, I've started.

Travis Johnson December 3rd, 2007 09:06 AM

I've got creative blockage like a mofo.....so no I have yet to start. lol

Philip Gioja December 3rd, 2007 10:08 AM

I have my basic idea figured out and have to work out the script and storyboard yet. Don't have my people lined up yet but I'm working on it.

James Gigante December 3rd, 2007 02:49 PM

Started?

Somewhat I think, got a script written out, and a shoot planned for tonight. Good pace, good pace.

Bruce Foreman December 4th, 2007 09:26 PM

Well, I signed up for this one but won't be able to even start anything on it. My younger brother passed away suddenly in West Virginia and I had to hit the road.

Bruce,

I thoughts and prayers are with you. I lost a brother many years ago, and it was also sudden and unexpected. I hope you have a loving support group to help you accept this loss.

Dick

Robert Martens December 5th, 2007 03:55 AM

I'm sorry to hear that, Bruce, my sympathy goes out to you and his other loved ones.

I'm terribly sorry to hear that.

Bruce, you'll be in my thoughts. You have my deepest sympathies.

Mike

Lorinda Norton December 6th, 2007 10:53 AM

Even though I sent you an email, Bruce, I'd like to add my sympathies here. Hang in there, Buddy.

Chris Barcellos December 6th, 2007 01:41 PM

Got a script written, now how to shoot, and with whom....

Michael Nistler December 6th, 2007 09:29 PM

Always running late, but worth it...

Hi y'all,

Okay then, you've sucked me in hook, line, and sinker - I see the LIGHT, so count me in (I just wired a donation for our worthy contest).

Good luck friends,

Michael Nistler

Mugurel Dragusin December 8th, 2007 01:03 PM

Guys, what in the world are you talking about? :P

I believe Mugurel’s question was tongue-in-cheek, Mike. ;)

Dang it, I did such a lousy job of shooting the other night it’s been like micro-surgery trying to cut something together. We were so cold I didn't take enough time to get things right. Why, I ask myself, did I write a story that involves shooting at night and outdoors in the cold—my two least favorite things to do?

OK, went over my little head! :)

Rehi all,

I had the golden opportunity to roll some footage last night for a party sequence. OTOH, I finished the script today - it weighs in at a whopping 13 pages! Nutz, I hate carving up the story.

Are we allowed 5 minutes of story plus a tad extra for titles and trailer? (please) Maybe I'll make the actors talk as though they're from New York <wink>

Michael
Happy Trails, until we meet again

Kris Holodak December 9th, 2007 11:16 AM

Wow Michael, 13 pages. That's impressive. I don't think I could come up with 13 pages worth of story. My gang is showing up in about an hour to shoot the 2 pages we wrote the other day. Hopefully the rain stops so we can do the outside stuff. Otherwise I don't know how many locations I'm going to be able to make my one house look like.

Smile,
Kris

The Cutting Room Floor

Hi all,

Grumble grumble - well, I've edited down my submission from 15 minutes to 6 minutes. From here on, the content/continuity gets dicey.

What's the official rules on submissions that encroach on the time limit? Maybe tomorrow life will look fracking better!

Good night, Michael

Michael,

I hate to have to give you the bad news, but the time limit is just 5 minutes. Part of what the DVChallenge is supposed to teach us is to make short to the point movies. I went about 4 1/2 minutes once on a 3 minute time limit and got chewed out by several people.

So, it is five minutes, with maybe a few seconds of fudge time, plus your credits.

Get out the scissors!

Mike

Kris Holodak December 13th, 2007 09:33 AM

posting them to youtube vs releasing them for comments

I'm going to be done soon, maybe tonight. I'm wondering if there was ever a decision that resolved the dilemma of instant availability on youtube taking away the phased release that we usually do. Should I post it but not tag it until it shows up on Dylan's list?

Smile,
Kris

Howdy Mike,

Thanks for the advise. No problemo - thinks look rosy this morning so I'll get out my creative juices along with the scissors. Ageed, it's hardly fair competition if some of us are allowed to skirt the contest rules...

Nurse: scalpel please! Michael

O000h, be careful with that scalpel! But, it is a good lesson in filmmaking.

Look forward to seeing your movie.

Mike

Michael Nistler December 13th, 2007 04:54 PM

Ditto for yours, Mike - you've certainly paid your dues. I did whittle it down to 5:00 excluding header and credits so now I'm "streel legal" (aside from a few continuity bumps). The music is scored, so aside from the credit roll, adding a foley effect here and there, I'm getting close to leaving the launch pad.

Is the latest process, upload first - add tags when instructed by Dylan to do so? This being my first entry, I'm not sure of our latest instructions. Dylan's blog post was a bit fuzzy for my linear mind (...upload to YouTube adding a title that says "thedvchallenge.com presents" and list it with our Youtube account 'TheDVChallenge')

Thanks, Michael

Nice going, Kris! That’s got to feel pretty good…

I’ve got a ways to go on this one. When the guy with the property didn’t come through I had to scramble for a new location, and that threw off some of my plans. The extension Dylan gave us on days really saved my bacon this time!

Dave Williams December 14th, 2007 01:59 AM

Watching it unfold.

Hi all - just wanted to say I'm going to enjoy watching your contest unfold this weekend. Good luck to all! Maybe one day I'll enter.

Mugurel Dragusin December 14th, 2007 05:27 AM

Probably I will begin shooting one of these days :)

Welcome Dave,

Great, we welcome your participation although it will hardly be a fair fight with us shooting against "Mr Glidecam" himself! BTW, again let me extend cudos on your "Ultimate Editor Shootout" - great job.

Warm Regards, Michael

Mike Teutsch December 14th, 2007 03:34 PM

Well, I'm supposed to start in about 3 hours! Fingers crossed, etc.

Mike

Edward Slonaker December 14th, 2007 03:49 PM

I tried an effect for one shot that looks like a 2-year-old did it on a Fisher-Price "Baby's First Editor".....
