New Windows Vista will boot in 2-3 seconds
 

Well, my XP computer booted relatively quickly as well, but certianly got bogged down over time, even with constant maintenance to avoid that problem.

What they need to do is make the PC/windows/registry self-repairing.

Boot in 3 seconds

Get infected by a trojan in 4 seconds

Crash after 5 seconds

That's progress!

3 seconds, until it gets packed with pornospam and spyware...

It will require new hardware with a new 'BIOS' (it is not really BIOS, it is the new replacement, which I just cannot remember the name of at the moment.)

C'mon guys, no need to start a petty cross-platform yadda ya. Remember, different strokes for different folks, and more importantly, at this day and age, any OS is only as good as the person at the keyboard.

I don't read it that way. And if you have unpatched XP SP1 on the net, it will be infected before the GUI during installation responds to the user.

Why in the hell do they need the registry anyway? Why do we need to 'install' programs? In the old days of the Atari ST, Falcom, Amiga (and I presume the Mac even today) programs could just be copied onto the hard drive and deleted off the hard drive at will. Much simpler. Files that relate to programs are easily found (why do we need all these DLL's? Why can't they be self contained within the program executable?)

And why can't modern programmers go back to the old days when stuff was written in machine code and made as small and as efficient as possible?

The BIOS replacement is EFI - Extensible Firmware Interface. The OS can inject pieces into to shortcut many of the things POST does.

Come on, I can make it through a half a cup of coffee while windows is booting, I can't lose my tranquility time.

Hey, MS is just saying Vista will boot fast. All the rest of the garbage will take forever to load. Enjoy your coffee. :D

Had this discussion a few times with various areas complaining about long load times. When we ship an OS package to the development teams, we have boot times under 30 seconds. By the time they have added all the enterprise apps, it takes more than 2 minutes to get to a desktop... :P

I own Mac and Windows. They both have their faults and their advantages. No OS is perfect. If applications were still written in assembler, I would still be a programmer :D
