I don't think it's the disk speed, James -- I've done straight captures on 4400rpm disks with no problems at all. 5400rpm is recommended for editing and I think 7200rpm is pretty much the standard today anyway.

Regardless of whatever software a Firewire-equipped laptop comes with, the advantage of DV-PC Recorder is that it's controllable by the camera and requires very little prep time (start it, and go). Since it's free, it's just a matter of shooter's choice -- some folks may prefer to use it, others may not. It's just another option.

I've done successful captures at 5400 too. I can't remember but I think that somewhere on Adobe's site it states that Premiere requires at least 7200 RPM for reliable capture, not dropping frames. I'm just telling you what I have experienced. I loaded a long run with Premiere 6.5 and dropped frames. I loaded the same run with Pinnacle and dropped no frames. I think it's Premiere. The lower end software outdoes the higher. I don't get it.
