Short trailer for wedding film

Hello,

this is the first wedding event I filmed (my own daugthers wedding). Half of the shots I did myself and half were done by someone else.
I used the Canon XH A1 wiithout any other special equipment.
I created this trailer as a kind of teaser, at least that was the intention.
Please give me your comment as this will help me to improve myself.

Since I know you guys are all such ballet lovers and never tire of seeing my daughters dance, here's a clip from one of their recent Nutcracker scenes, shot w/my A1 -- slowed down 67%, panalook2, no color correction:

Re Short trailer for wedding film

Only thing that caught my attention is I thought their was too much camera movement in some of the shots, other than that I liked it. But then again I'm no expert.

Some really good looking shots in there, but a lot of others were not so hot looking. kind of grainy, and lots with blown out highlights and invisible blacks. Might try tweaking your settings to not loose the information in BOTH the highlights and blacks, which i know is hard since it's very high contrast situations. The shot at 1:00 and another one, on the same beach i think, a few shots later looked proper for sure.

John Cambell January 11th, 2009 06:48 PM

Yes, thanks for the input. A lot of that footage is older when I didnt know what I was doing with the camera, so the good looking footage is the newer stuff

It all looks great. Very tough to center the frame on a fast erratic moving target and much of the footage is right on the bullseye. The heck with 'perfect color footage' 110% of the time. Get the action and tell the story. Volcom takes 'perfect footage' and has a couple of 300 lb wrestlers take it to the back room and stomp on it, make it look old, add grain and hair and scratches, puts it back in their movie, and makes millions. That's what the crowd wants. For surfing footage, always totally perfect color and focus means you've sold out, might as well get a suit and tie and get a job on Wall Street. This video could use a little audio interview with the subject, some background. Otherwise it looks like about a year worth of clips and some very good surfing.

whatya think of the footage...

Michael Hutson January 14th, 2009 06:38 PM

Bill,

I like the pfvision a lot better.

I sure would have liked to have seen the truecolor vs pfvision vs your modified pfvision. Could you do that at your next shoot and post?

Thanks for sharing,
Michael

Bill Grant January 14th, 2009 06:55 PM

Michael,
I don't use the original truecolor because I find it too soft. I was trying this one out, so that's the only reason I even used it. I don't necessarily like it, but in the dark it was brighter. I find the colors in the NLE to be a little too much. I might use it if I get in this kind of situation again...
Bill

Bill Grant January 14th, 2009 06:57 PM

Also, you can't really see the difference once it's rendered. I just watched it from here. The NLE shows a radical difference between these 2 pictures. Very interesting.

Randy Panado January 14th, 2009 08:18 PM

Thanks for sharing! That little extra bump in brightness has saved me a few times since putting together this preset. Granted it's not a HUGE difference but I believe the presets can only do so much in such a harsh situation.

I like to keep NR2 off as I like a sharper image. It's all personal preference. :)

"Come What May" Feature Film Shot On The XHA1

This new movie was shot on the A1! I just purchased the DVD and I must say , they did a great job! They used the M2 adapter. On our summer trip we visited the campus where it was filmed. Their website tells how is was made. Groovy Marsha!

Trailer - Alexis the Fireman

Hi all,

Link: Alexis le pompier / Alexis the Fireman on Vimeo

It all started during the summer of 2008. Wanted to make a short with my son Alexis (he's 3 1/2) being a fireman but it's been a little hard to keep his attention span for more than a few minutes. We had to give up the project considering the amount of work required and the fact that Alexis wasn't really enjoying the process anymore.

The short then got recycled in an hopefully interesting trailer instead...

Fortunately, the Premiere has been done with his little cousins last Saturday and they all enjoyed it very much. He was so proud of himself being the hero of his own movie!

But the best part was to look into his eyes and know without the shadow of a doubt, that I was the coolest Dad on Earth!

Feel free to comment!

Kees van Duijvenbode January 21st, 2009 03:24 AM

Hahaha... very nice. Ik like it. Is this shot with a XHA1? If yes, which preset did you use for the shots inside, your boy behind the desk? I see very good skin tones in that part.

Benoit Bissonnette January 21st, 2009 08:02 AM

Hi,

Thanks for watching.

Yes, I shot it with a XHA1. If I remember correctly, I used the preset "Panalook2" (I shot it last summer). I did some CC in Magic Bullet Looks but I would need to redo it. I also need to deinterlace the footage - I made a mistake in the configuration during the render. I shot it at 24F.

Best regards,

Benoit

One day shoot, some good sun, some light overcast
Panalook 2, 60i, -3db, AV mode, no ND filter, edited progressive
Been shooting in the AV mode lately, seems to give more of a point and shoot flexibility for action and changing outdoor lighting.

Short Film: Waiting

This film has quite the history. "Waiting" was originally a 30-40 minute short film entitled "The Ornament" which I shot almost a year and a half ago. Unfortunately, as most things in film, things never went to plan. Everything from a random life events, to a busy schedule, to simply the fact that the film wasn't coming together like I had envisioned. Approximately only 25% of the film was shot so editing anything close to what I had envisioned for "The Ornament" wasn't anywhere near possible. So instead of just letting the footage collect dust on my hard drive, I decided to cut the footage together and see if I could come up with anything that would resemble a narrative. I had to get really artsy with the editing but overall, I had a great time cutting this piece together. I thought of it as an "editing exercise" or "challenge". I hope you guys enjoy this somewhat experimental romantic love story.

PS: This project also features the debut of my new production logo! Woo!

Popcorn Festival Floats

This was something I did for the my city last summer, covering Popcorn Festival which is held every year in honor of Orville Redenbacher, who started his company in our town.

Once again, Its pretty mellowdramatic, but I tried to show the effort, time and emotion put into the Popcorn Floats every year. It was with the VIVIDRGB preset, but I also used the LetusExtreme and it wasn't that long after I got it. I didn't know much about it and I didn't know about turning off the OIS. And that screwed with all my shot. Opps!

I noticed a few mistakes recently with seeing the edge of the Letus too...

Thanks!

Yea. The profanity in here is pretty abundant. I didn't agree to that but it wasn't my script. I would "beep" it out but it'll be odd. Thanks though.
