We have a family of Great Spotted woodpeckers feed from our peanut feeder every day.

Great video. You've set me a challenge...

I'm a great believer in the spotlight mode and find it a very intelligent program on my Sony cams. It'll go from zero to -5 stops, a most impressive range. When you've no idea what the stage lighting director is going to do next, it's a lifeline.

Backlight mode is dumb stupidity next to it.

Thanks for the comments. The video was fun to do. I took the DVD to school today to show some students the bird. They also seemed to enjoy it.

Thanks John,
Yes, I too didn't like the footage coming from my A1 until I realized that taking time to set the camera adjustments properly, shooting with sufficient light and doing some nice color grading all adds to super footage! Can't wait to see your shots!

It still amazes me that despite my understanding of aerodynamics etc that those monsters get off the ground.
I found it interesting to see the mini tornado thingies forming around the intakes of the jets on power-up.
Looks good.

That was awesome! What a huge, majestic bird. Wow.

So now I have some questions. I live near a major airport (CLE) and the airplanes land right over my house, so I've managed to get some great long-exposure light trails on my DSLR.

But how do you get such great footage of the airplane on the ground? Do you need permission from the airport? I've been wary of taking my camera over there (really only 3/4 mile away) and filming at the fence line. But I'm concerned that a caravan of black gov't SUVs will pop up and take my gear. Is this not really a valid concern?

Many thanks to everyone who took time to comment!

The Jumbo was landing at Manchester Airport in England. I was filming on a grassy mound overlooking the airport boundary fence. Never had a problem with the authorities, however I guess it would be a different story if I where to film this kind of thing in the United States!

Pittsburgh Skyline at Night

Any suggestions/critiques on this piece of video?

Pittsburgh Skyline - Night on Vimeo

I shot it with my Canon XH-A1 at +3 gain with a shutter of 1/8 and the LOWNOISE custom preset.

Improvements, if any? Suggestions on shooting night shots with a camera that has 1/3" pick-up chips?

Bill Grant December 20th, 2008 11:39 PM

Could you not have gotten away without the +3db? Especially at an 1/8? Looks good to me though... The cars seem to be moving too fast :)
Bill

James Orlowski December 21st, 2008 07:54 AM

I guess I should have shot it both at +3 and 0 to compare, but I didn't think of it at the time.

Leopard and Hyena

Hi,

Also this year again very nice experiences during our day and night drives in South Africa Leopard & Hyena on Vimeo

I have some problems with interlace but don't know how to solve (tips?)
I use Avid Liquid edition 7.2

Movie made with Canon XHA1 standard settings.

Wil

Bryce Comer December 28th, 2008 08:41 PM

Hi Wil,
Really nice pictures of the Leopard & Heyena. It is ashame about the interlacing though. I would suggest you try adjusting your output settings in Liquid. The best bet would be to output to 720p then upload that to Vimeo. The file size may well be large, but Vimeo will compress it anyway. By outputting from Liquid with a progressive file, you will get rid of all the interlacing problems. Play around with the output settings & see how you go. If you are still having problems, please let us know.

Groeten,
Bryce

Jason,

Go to the Vimeo site and at the forum there is a sticky page (Look for "Tutorials")explaining the editting, format, de-interlacing procedures for just about every NLE.

xha1 first shots with my christmas present

I had to throw this up. I am quite excited about my gift. I upgraded from a canon elura 100 to an XH A1!!!!!!! OMG! I have spent many hours viewing dvi. Just want to say "Thanks" for all the great advice that is availible here. I greatly appreciate you sharing your wisdom and experience.

HD FOOTAGE CANON XH A1 on Vimeo

Camera set in manual, 1/60, preset vividrgb, manually white balanced with a small canvas frame I found in the garage.

Clouds were moving very, very quickly in and out. Sometimes I adjusted the iris ring, at other times I just let it go and do its thing.(Recommendations how to handle this situation are welcome)

Thanks again,
Michael

Sample clip done with 35MMFILM preset

Using a totally new approach, i developed the preset 35MMFILM which is optimized for 35mm adapters.

Sample video: Test on Vimeo

35MMFILM features:
  • Less magenta than ever
  • Lower gamma
  • More color separation and contrast

To acheve a lower gamma (lower than possible with the A1) i rised the high-mid to high levels.
Just lower slightly the lens aperture of the camera and you will get lower gamma with normal highlights and mid tones! :)

It is interesting to see how much different is this setting from the others.

It was filmed early morning at ullswater on my way back to Scotland, it was so cold that morning, in fact -8 centigrade most of the morning but it left a mist hanging over the water.

Last time I was there the visibility was about 20 feet due to the incredible downpour. Nice to see the area looking so good.
