Clip: XHA1 with new .8 Canon WA adapter

I think the camera was unfortunately dialed in with sharpness that needed to be taken down to compensate for some minor aliasing, but this will give a good idea of how nice the new adapter is for the XHA1--and only $500!!

The clip was intentionally warmed up with the Kelvin WB manual control.

Wow. For $500 that's pretty impressive.

Lovely setup too.

How do I view an mt2 file? FCP doesn't seem to recognize it. Suggestions? Thanks.

Download the free and very versatile application called MPEG Streamclip.

To Barlow, thanks for that clip. Of course you've gone and made me hungry for a nice big bowl of pasta marinara.

Great clip! May I ask how you are able to capture your video to an .mt2 file? Premiere Pro always wants to capture my video as .mpeg. Is there any difference?

Steven Dempsey December 14th, 2006 09:09 PM

Barlow, can you point me to where I can buy this WA adapter? The only thing I can find online from Canon for the XHA1 is a .75.

Anyone have experience with the .75?

Barlow Elton December 15th, 2006 11:37 PM

Isn't the WA actually a .75 fir $499?

Deke: I captured the clip on the Mac with a free system utility app called DVHSCap. It simply captures the raw transport stream and saves the file as a m2t. On the PC I believe there is an app call CapDVHS that does the same thing.

Deke Ryland December 16th, 2006 07:43 AM

Hey Barlow... do you get a better quality capture by capturing the raw .mt2 as opposed to capturing the mpeg version like premiere pro 2.0 does? I certainly don't want to be capturing anything less than the optimal video. Thanks!

I don't think Barlow is on a PC so I will add my thoughts. Premiere Pro, when in Canon HDV 24f mode, captures clips and renames them mpg. I am pretty sure it is not doing any recompression to the files themselves but you never know. I haven't done enough testing to confirm this. I use Cineform to capture, even when I am going to edit in HDV. You just check a box that says capture only .m2t files.

I will test when I get a chance to see if the mpg files created from a capture in premiere are just as good as the .m2t files. If there is any clue, it is the fact that there is no conversion going on with the files themselves. They are named .mpg as they are being captured. So I really don't think Premiere is converting them.

Peace!

Hey, I just downloaded Mpeg Streamclip so I'm going to check your clip out.

Anyone ever get link for the .8 Canon WA?

It appears to be fantastic, but I can't find it.

Antoine Fabi June 20th, 2007 08:24 PM

Hi Barlow,

You sold your XLH1 ?

Do you see any difference in image quality between the two cameras ?
