As much as I'd love to see it, I doubt Canon is thinking very far ahead. They seem to make solid equipment that's just behind everyone else. This probably won't be any different.

Has anyone even contemplated how it would be possible to design an HD cam with the GL form factor? The GL2 uses 3 quarter-inch CCDs. Without a technologic breakthrough, an HD chip of that size would probably yield an unacceptably noisy image. Use of a third-inch chip, however, would require a comparatively larger lens, which in turn would likely necessitate alteration of the camera's balance. The cumulative effect of several such changes would be a change to the form factor. Most likely, the HD replacement for the GL will be somewhat larger. But, unless its image quality is pretty bad (for HD), it lacks 24p, or its price is above, say, $5,000, it should sell briskly.

No way, the gl3 will be laser based. Laser for everything from range finging to bomb guidance to eye surgery. Man i hope this bong induced fantasy never ends!!!

Did what? Cram HD resolution onto a quarter-inch chip, or maintain a small form factor with a third-inch chip? I assume you mean the latter, as the HVR-AU1 uses a third-inch chip, but only one -- so the bulk of a prism assembly was eliminated. And its lens is a 10-to-1, not a 20-to-1. Still, you may be right. It's possible that Canon may decide to cut costs -- and bulk --and go with a single CMOS chip.

I happily stand corrected. It's official -- two GL form factor models: the XH-G1 and XH-A1.

Yeah, I just hope they will push xl2 prices lower. I can't affords an xl2 as it is, so i really can't afford the new canons. Maybe in a year, not to long

Bzzt! Sorry, but he was wrong. The XM2 / GL2 / XV2 are not discontinued. The new XH Series HDV camcorders are additions to the Canon line and they're not replacing anything. The XM2 / GL2 / XV2 are still current products and will continue to be until year's end at least. Remember, if it ain't gone from the Canon site, then it ain't discontinued. Hope this helps,
