GL3 part 2
Canon USA has the rebate for the GL2 going to June 30, 2006 now!! What's the deal? Are they going to sell this camera forever!
|
Shortly after that expiration date it's DVExpo East, correct?
Wasn't that where the predecessor was announced? |
who can remember that far back.
|
That rebate has been going on for at least 2 1/2 years--back when I bought my first GL2. Its still a useful camera, but I sure am glad I sold it to get a Z1U!
|
June 2002 the XM2 came out - 4 years is that?
C'mon Mr C , cut to the chase . . . already!! Grazie |
Noooooooooooo not a new one! My old one was the most pages of posts I've ever gotten from people here! lol
Canon better get their ass moving on my 24F GL-H1. Or I'll light a fire under it. :) |

I see someone buying a Gl2 now and then, but I think that a GL3 24F HDV/SD under $3,000 would be a big seller. |
I do wonder though, if Canon don't unveil a GL3 at NAB, what they will be exhibiting? I know they have a number of new lenses out, but surely they would want to make at least one big announcement? Canon's slowness can be very infuriating.
Mind you though, the GL1 and GL2 used 1/4" CCD's. So it would be a change for the family to use 1/3". Given the way that the XL2 is still fairly new and won't be phased out for a while, I doubt that if a GL3 was announced it would be in the same price range as the old models. Certainly a contender for the FX1 though. One thing is for sure, it would be a big seller, and the market needs it. I know someone who wants to get an HDV camera. If you want a decent form of 24 frame emulation and can't afford an H1, or don't want to bother with P2, there isn't really a camera out there that fits apart from the Sony A1. But that is no good if you want any decent form of manual control. Come on Canon! |

Aaagh! Aaaaaggghhh!! The GL2 simply refuses to die. |

Now, Mr Canon, do that at a price that is much less than the XLHD and then Canon will sell buckets of 'em! Mr Canon, please get this sorted out! Grazie |
No Expo East!!!

The Javitz Centre has always been packed!!! What gives? |
ı strongly believe that gl3 wont be large chip, XLR input, or 24F. H1 was just released and canon can not take risk of directing expectations from H1 to GL3 by announcing gl3 as derived version H1.so do you think the only reason of selling H1 is its interchangeable lens system ? except from few wildlife guys, % 90 of people use xl2 with its 20x even they use wide-angle convertors instead of buying 3x. hence if canon release 24F, XLR mic-in, with 3chip GL3, it will bw 5000-6500 $ range and people turn their eyes from H1 to gl3.
so the gl3 will be like fx1, maybe 1/3 inch one chip native 16:9 high-def, but lacks some key things from H1. and it will be announced through this year and in the stores 1st quarter of 2007. I expect in the following months canon will introduce affordable prosumer hidef cam like sony HC3, priced around 1600$, available in end of summer. I just think, alkim. |
I had been holding out for Canon to get their act together and finally jump into the market, but I decided to blow them off and order an FX1. I love my Canon's but if they won't give any sign of their time-frame for replacing the antiquated GL2, then they deserve to lose a lot of business IMHO.
I still buy nothing but Canon still cameras, but I don't think I'll get another Canon camcorder ever again if they're going to just jerk people around who need HD for projects who can't afford the prohibitively (for most of us) expensive XLH1. |
Amen!
They think they are trying to control their own lives, but in reality they are trying to control ours. Here's another potential GL3 customer who is simply not seeing it after all this time. ;) |
That's okay with me. The sooner you guys get out of the way, the quicker I'll be able to get mine when it ships.

BTW, and IMHO, Sony have given Canon exactly the best permission to fold back their market share into a single BIG chip. Now THAT conversation I'd liked to have been a fly on the wall - if at all it did happen? Quote:

I've elevated "naivety" to an art-form. Just by thinking something I realise doesn't "Make it So!". But juggling with the ideas does offer options for others to consider? Yes? Thanks for the feedback Akim - very much appreciated . . ;-) Best regards, Grazie |
when Chris Hurd posts here, I sit up and take notice...

Chris, my birthday is honestly in September - so would I be looking to buy myself a birthday present...? or would I be more likely buying a Christmas present??? (*sitting here rubbing hands waiting eagerly for a reply from the Kennelmeister!*) |

I agree that canon doesn't have enough courage. though sony, pana, and jvc have higher models, they fill the market with plenty of sd-hd cameras, without fear of not selling high end cams.especially the sony has 4 hd models. and it is really hard to understand why canon waits. If I am canon I release 4 hd cameras, because it can feel free that it hasn't any high end cam. but it is evident that canon is getting ready to release at least 2 hd cams, since H1 is over priced to 9000$. ok I make up my mind and wish two probable gl3: 1. one 1440x1050 chip, XLR-ed, analog hd-sdı out, 20x hd lens, 2. three 1440x1050 chips (may be not 1080, only 720f), non XLR-ed, non hdsdı out, plus 16x hd lens. if it is priced 5000 and the second one, then I m afraid that gl2 forum will get some questions like " please help xl2 or gl3 ? " :)) I like too much to play strategies of cam manufacturers, even funny than making film ! thanks, alkim. |

Maybe Canon is working on some kick a$$ camera and everyone will be glad we had to wait.
|
It would have to be the size of the Gl2, or less, have a replaceable lens, and be better then the H1, as good as the 1/2inch XDCAM HD preferable, with 720p or with true 1920*1080p as well (I know this is not a HDV mode, but thats the point). Then, I think most of us would just about forget just about every other camera in existence.
Actually, 720p 4:4:4, and 1080 4:2:0 at the same 50Mb/s data rate would be kick ass enough. But would make a great H2. |
after looking at the Sony HC3 this weekend with HDV/DV, 24fps, night shot, and all the other stuff for $1400 it shouldn't be to hard for Canon to put together a nice GL3 for under $3,000.
|
but now with AVCHD, what is Canon going to do?
Certainly, once again, a Canon offering that would be HDV only (ie. tape only) would seem somewhat passe, especially given the news of AVCHD???
Maybe Canon is going to join the AVCHD fold and all will be well - I hope so - because real 1080/24p is just too good to pass up... So funny how things change - last week I was all for a GL3 since I was willing to "wait" - frustrated by lack of presence at "HDV" low end from likes of Canon and Panasonic - but now AVCHD announcement has changed things a bit for me - the GL3 had better be GREAT for me to give it a serious look... Here's hoping! Canon can be GREAT again! |
I must have missed AVCHD,,,,,what is that?
|
Yes Mark, maybe that is why also the JVC consumer HD camera is delayed, and why we are getting new Sony HD cameras rumoured to be coming. But they have said JVC wouldn't be using it or something, I find that hard to believe.

Stop the presses, what is this thing?
It looks like a GL2 but it's black, or at least it's dark grey. Is that a 16:9 flip-out LCD? June's just about over, ain't it? |
HEY!! I just got this in my email from Mr Hurd? Has he .. . er . .. heard anything? But when I come here - NADA!!
C'mon Christopher!! . .and this is what I got in my email:- *************** Stop the presses, what is this thing? It looks like a GL2 but it's black, or at least it's dark grey. Is that a 16:9 flip-out LCD? *************** Well? - Grazie |

Chris!! You got a BIGGER view . . ?
|
Yeah Chris, where's the picture?!
Canon have just purchased a 24p license too :)) |
Any bigger and I could not have smuggled it out the way I did. What is it? You tell me!
|
OK .. if true!
* 16:9 is either 3CCD or single CMOS? * 3CCD and same size chip 1/4 .. not bigger? * Canon weren't making any more SD at this level? * Possible HD? * Possible HD with native 16:9? * Possible evrything the same and only made a 16:9 LCD? - Ughhh.... Where DID this still come from??? Grazie |
the GL2 rebate ends on the 30th,,,,maybe something is in the works.
|
Okay found the still.
Where's you get that Chris? Sure it isn't a GL2 in a certain light? |
Sure looks like a GL2, but what light turns pearl white into slate gray?
|
do you think anyone at this point would do a 16:9 SD only? No HDV.
Maybe canon is going to pull a Panasonic stunt and just make a few changes and a different color? |

Grazie |
Could be. But I find the purchase of a 24p license interesting.
