So are you both talking about watching the footage on the built in HV20 LCD? I wouldn't trust it for detail - just for framing really. It also overscans, so more of the image is being captured to tape than it shows.

It's also been my experience. Never expect wysiwyg from the camcorder's LCD. Probably not even an external LCD via HDMI. Have you ever connected you camera to your HDTV and watched a quick pan? It's probably the camera preview software/hardware can't duplicate what's going to tape although the uncompressed video caturing group wouldn't want that to be true because that is what all the hype is about - doing an HDMI capture of uncompressed video.
