Do you have a shot taken with fully open aperture? I'd really like to know how shallow a depth of field is possible with the HV20. Best, Dino |
depth of field
haven't done any shots where i'm controlling aperture, but this clip i shot shows some pretty good DOF at least when zoomed in a bit

What are the best settings for low light situations? Thanks!

Nice job, Taylor. I like how the cam is handling the hotspot on the house/duplex on the right side of the frame.
There's an interesting quality to the progressive look of this material. It's detailed, but very smooth. No edge enhancement that I can discern. I can't believe this is possible now in a $1K cam. Ridiculous. :) |
HV10 footage, HDV v DVCPRO HD comparison
I made a short film (2min) and sequenced in both HDV and DVCPRO HD. Made in Compressor using H.264 LAN tweaked. The difs aren't noticeable to me colorwise.
One odd thing was having to change the aspect ratio of the photos to match the look after copying the HDV sequence into the DVCPRO HD sequence. It was shot in crappy light, I believe shutter speed of 30. There's a bit of gain, but wonder what I can do to make colors more vibrant. I just have to say...I love your work man!
Good stuff. To get that sun shot, did you dial back the exposure using the dial to get the black background? Very neat. |
I can't view it on my Vista w/qtpro...apple says its intermediate codec and looks like thats mac only? Help....

Great footage, yet again.
I'm counting down the days before I buy the HV10 for my Round the World adventure, need to buy it within 30 days of travel to get it duty and GST free! I'm interested to hear what settings were used also, were you using any filters for this shot? Great detail considering you were using digital zoom as well. |
Canon HV20 Bird Movie Clip.
Here is a very short sample clip of a bird in a pine tree I shot the other day.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=998OGGI2 As you can tell, I am not even close to going pro. :) The video was shot in 1440X1080i, captured and cut with PP2.0 then rendered. I think the bird is a little overexposed, which I could have fixed in the camera settings. |

You can't improve color by transcoding HDV to another codec but the color will hold up better when you do CC later. If you want your HDV colors to "pop" learn the 3 way color corrector in FCP (which I know you're using) or better yet invest in the colorista plugin from Magic Bullet. It works wonders on HDV. I rarely had to do much CC'ing on my HVX200 DVCPro footage but a 1 chip just doesn't capture color like a good 3 chip cam obviously. HV10 footage once tweaked intercuts fairly well with DVCPro.
