normal v voice v wind screen audio

does anyone have any further detail than what the manual provides regarding the difference in audio settings? what precisely happens when you change settings? I assume wind screen cuts off some bass and voice boosts the mid/high range....

Ken Tanaka March 8th, 2003 11:19 AM

Bob,
Your last sentence captured tha essence of the answer. Nothing too magic here.

So would it be bettter to just use a high pass filter on the audio in post to you can adjust it more to your liking?

Ken Tanaka March 8th, 2003 03:05 PM

In general, it's best to get the cleanest audio you can possibly get on the tape. Ideally you want to do as little as necessary in post. Setting the "wind screen" will set the bass roll-off, which is generally ok for eliminating low-frequency rumble or hum. When I use the onboard mic I don't use the "voice" setting at all.

Of course the best all-around approach will be to mic the sound very well. The onboard mic on all of these cameras is ok for ambient sound but is just too wide to produce good sound in most environments no matter what setting you use.

Bite the Bullet - Buy a Mic!

That's what I've had to do. No other way to do it. Plenty of chat here about what people go with.

For me - Sennhieser K6 module and shotgun MK66 with the Canon MA300 adaptor. This does interviews in noisy pubs and windy days.

who's bob?

since it's now twice.....I thought I'd ask (with a grin) "who's bob?"

Ken Tanaka March 8th, 2003 08:10 PM

Aw, (blushing), isn't Bob the familiar form of Bud?

Very sorry.

Bud Kuenzli March 9th, 2003 03:31 AM

grin

nothing to it, Ken. I just chuckled....no...bob's not any form of bud...in my case bud is a nickname, but it's the name I've gone by my entire life in spite of the fact that it's not part of my legal name at all. not an uncommon thing. bob is the short version of Robert. rob is also the short version of robert. dunno why. :)

bob's my uncle.
