I bought 2 BP941-like (5500mAh) from Sabah Oceanic more than a year ago.
They sell them now for $38 each.
I always run out of tape or light before camera battery ;)

Hello everyone, well this is my first post....

I recently purchased some batteries from http://www.batteryvalues.com. They were a lot cheaper than the ones from canon, and after a weeks use, they seem to work ok. Will need to see overall life.

Here is the complete link if anyones interested !

I just got a Lenmar 941 5500mah for my GL2 from here http://www.aaxes.net/products.mpl?act=pd&id=2002-07-15_3738&ref=pgrab for $56.95, quick service, no problems. I haven't tried the Power 2000's (945) from B&H , I figure I'll get another lenmar as this one run's almost forever (but still can't match a Sony :~( .)

Jason Casey October 17th, 2003 01:49 PM

Thank's guys, now I have lots of options, all cheaper than the ones direct from Canon.

Alex Dunn October 17th, 2003 02:08 PM

AtBatt.com has the best I've seen, and you can get the 7-8 hour batt for $74.99. They also have a car/home rapid charger for $34.99 and FREE SHIPPING!

I bought two about a year ago and I've never had a problem.

Jason Casey November 11th, 2003 10:04 AM

Anybody use these batteries for GL2??

Just looking through E-bay and I was wondering if anyone here has used these batteries for the GL2 and has any positive or negative comments about them.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=48516

Thanks.

Vince Skinner November 11th, 2003 11:02 AM

I'm have used that that type, but I've seen them at walmart before. If they are 8 hour batteries, they are usually large bricks. That one doesn't appear to be "brick like". Hope that helps.

Bud Kuenzli November 13th, 2003 07:20 PM

similar

i have similar third party 5500 mAh batteries for my gl2 that work just great. I don't know this vendor or this particular battery but Canon asked an incredible price for their larger capacity batteries so buying such third party batteries is generally a very good deal.

Bob Benkosky November 16th, 2003 01:58 AM

If you want really good batteries, check ebay for Batt_inc , they are really cheap and really effective. I bought 2 of them already and they work perfectly and long. I'm not sure about 8 hours, but Canon claims 3 hours max on their 945 I think. Maybe 8 hours of simply watching tapes...who knows. I've never timed the battery anyhow, but I've never had to change the big boys out while filming unless it was a different day without the full charge.

Jason Casey November 17th, 2003 12:29 PM

Thanks guys, I'm still kind of wary to buy them. I was hoping for someone who has purchased them and used them for a while and said they were OK. It took me a long time to save up for my GL2 and I don't want to ruin it by getting a cheap battery and having it cause some damage to the camera (not sure if that is even possible or not)

I actually just bought one on a tip from someone else in these forums.

Battery question for my GL2

Hello!

I've lurked these very informative boards for what seems forever....and recently bought a GL2. Mods, if I have posted this in the wrong forum or there is another thread going that answers my question...please point me in that direction.

I decided to buy an extended use battery on ebay. I bought what was advertised as the equivalent to the Canon BP-945. I received the battery a few days ago and noticed that the battery says it is a "7.4 volt 5700mAH". The BP-945 is advertised as "7.2" volt". I am worried that if I use the slighly higher powered aftermarkert battery on my GL2...it may damage my camera.

Any advice is greatly appreciated......

Ken Tanaka February 15th, 2004 03:11 PM

Hello and Welcome, Dennis.

No problem with the 7.4v rating on that battery. The nominal voltage of the GL2 is, indeed, 7.2v. But onboard voltage regulators take care of such minor variances.

Lenmar is one of the leading 3rd party battery manufacturers for camcorders. Take a browse through some of their Canon camcorder products and you'll see a variety of voltages. (Note that not all of these batteries are compatible with the GL2.)

Don Palomaki February 15th, 2004 03:59 PM

The Li-ion batteries are nominally 7.2 volts, but with a full, fresh charge it is more likely to measure about 8.2 volts, and when near discharged it is probably around 6.2 volts.

The 7.4 is probably marketing speak.

As Ken notes, the 7.4 should not be a problem.

Dennis Parker February 16th, 2004 04:22 AM

Thanks for the info Don & Ken. That takes care of the concerns that I had about charging it up and using it. Now let me get back to lurking!

Power 2000 Battery Terminal Covers

Hey all,

Just bought a Power 2000 BP-945 equivalent for my GL2 and was wondering if and where I could get a cover for the battery terminals, for when it's not in use?

Thanks.

David Ho March 7th, 2004 06:37 AM

Do you leave your batteries on the GL2 at all times?

I'm debating whether I should leave it (BP930s & BP945s) on the GL2 when I turn it off and have it idling or not. How do you guys approach this? I've also heard some crazy instances when changing the tape that accounted in battery/tape errors...

What is your routine for packing and getting the GL2 ready to shoot? I usually do: put batteries in first, turn on GL2, put the DV cassette in, then ready to roll!

Steve Olds March 7th, 2004 07:27 AM

I leave the battery on so I'am ready to shoot. All I need to do is load the tape and shoot. I have not had a problem yet doing this.

Stewart McDonald March 7th, 2004 08:13 AM

You mean you're not meant to leave a cassette in when its not in use?

Paul Bravmann March 7th, 2004 10:08 AM

i'd been meaning to ask about this myself.

the gl-2 manual states that the battery and tape should be removed from the camera when not in use. but my understanding is that most seasoned videographers are pretty much always "locked and loaded."

is there a potential for damage if one ignores the manual, leaves the battery on and tape in? and if so, what kind of damage?

phb

Robin Davies-Rollinson March 7th, 2004 10:41 AM

I usually leave batteries on the camera - and if they're not on, then the mains adapter is!
There's usually a tape in it as well. It's not left touching the heads, so why worry...

Robin

Jean-Philippe Archibald March 7th, 2004 10:48 AM

Take a look a this thread:

http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthrea...t=leaving+tape

Nicholi Brossia March 7th, 2004 01:24 PM

My experience, keep in mind I haven't scientifically tested this, is that the batteries hold their charge better when stored off the camera. This could just be my imagination, but I think its a good idea anyway, especially for longer periods of time.

Graham Bernard March 7th, 2004 03:30 PM

I remove battery and tape. Call me old fashioned, but a tape in a device and a battery still connected . . . just don't add up as being a safe situation.

Grazie

Ignacio Rodriguez March 7th, 2004 03:48 PM

Leaving the battery, WA adapter and things like that attached can be problematic because vibration and sudden movements that would normally not harm the camera can cause some damage. The battery attachment assembly on a camera I used to have was losing contact becasue of this, I had to repair it.

Then again, I keep the WA and batt attached to my PDX10 most of the time. But when I know I will be on the road and walking a lot or travelling I tend to remove the battery and adapter.

GL2/GL1 Batteries - Found at Wal-Mart Clerance!

This was the best section of the forum I figured to post this in since its where the people that use these batteries will look :)

Anyways I saw that Wal-Mart has a 2-Hr Off Brand Canon battery availiable for $15, its made by Polaroid but I've found no difference in quality or performance versus the standard battery, and I have 3 of them!!

Anyways just thought I'd let you know in case anybody wanted to run out and see if their Wal-Mart had any left!! The original price on them was $30.

Steve Luhr March 25th, 2004 07:52 AM

Thanks, I might get a couple. Steve

Honglin Sun March 25th, 2004 10:02 AM

Hi can you give more specific info on the battery? How is that work with Canon charger? Anyway good find.

Ming Dong March 25th, 2004 04:39 PM

I found BP-915 clones at my local Walmart

But they were regular price. They did have some other batteries on sale, but only $5 off. You lucked out!

Tim Frank March 25th, 2004 06:16 PM

They were Polaroid BP-915 2 hr clones. They had a rack of polaroid batteries cleranced...guess I did luck out!! I have it working fine with my universal charger and I've tried it on my school's Canon chargers, works fine.

Brian Kirkey March 26th, 2004 01:46 PM

Hello everyone,

I was lucky and found 6 of them for $12.00 each at a PA Wal-Mart when I was on a business trip the first week in March.

They all charged just fine with my Canon GL1 Charger. When I returned from my trip; I put them on my Battery Analyzer and they all exceeded the Specs of the Canon BP-915 Battery.

They come with a full replacement warranty (info in package you can read before you buy through SAFT America) and Wal-Mart will refund your money as long as you have receipt and original packaging.

They are great "just in case" Batteries for those of us who have larger batteries. I am looking for more.

gl2 battery 7.4v?

I have a quick question I hope someone can help me. I just bought my gl2 and I bought an extra off brand battery (bp945). When I received it in the mail today the voltage was 7.4 and not 7.2v. Does anyone know if this will damage the gl2? I tried calling canon and all they could tell me is that if it is not a canon product, they can not tell me anything.

Ken Tanaka April 23rd, 2004 09:35 AM

7.4v will be fine, Stacey. 7.2v is the nominal voltage required by the GL2 but, in fact, the actual voltage batteries deliver will vary as they discharge. The 7.4v rating is normal for these batteries.

Have fun!

Stacey Trim April 23rd, 2004 11:00 AM

thank you Ken

Dennis Parker April 25th, 2004 07:17 PM

Stacey, I had the same concern/question.....

A lot of friendly fellow GL2'ers around here!

Exploding batteries?

I was recently looking through Canon's GL2 site and there was a note warning about the use of non-Canon batteries in Canon chargers. The site stated that some batteries had leaked/exploded because they lacked a charge-regulating device. There was no other information as to which companies batteries had failed except to recommend that you only use Canon batteries.

Any ideas as to which after-market batteries are causing problems?

Frank Granovski April 26th, 2004 04:10 PM

Perhaps contact Canon and ask. I never heard about this sort of thing.

Don Palomaki April 26th, 2004 04:16 PM

I've not read of any issues with camcorder batteries to date in many years of lurking bulletin boards, and web forums. The main issue mentione dis shorting the battery terminals, which can cause high curents and start fires.

My guesss would be early production Li ion battries, those produced before the technology reached its curent level of stability, and perhaps some cheap no-name generics.
