Keep camera originals after Prores conversion?
Is there a good reason to keep camera originals after making Prores conversions? Do Prores conversions cause a generation loss?
|
Theoretically there should be some loss but it's insignificant in practice. However the converted files will be several times the size of the original so if you want to keep one version it's better to keep the originals.
I always regard the ProRes versions as temporary files in any case. |
I would media manage the Prores footage so that you keep only what you have used in the project and then archive the H.264.
|
I usually toss out the intermediates (making sure I could easily recreate them in the future of course) and save the originals. I consider the originals to be the negatives.
|
I'd stick with the originals too. Ideally, if you have enough space it's great to back up both the originals and the ProRes.

Thanks for the responses folks, that helps.
