T3i video...what is this lens??
Hey, at 0:03, what lens is being used to achieve that look? Just to be clear, the one where the two people are taking a picture and look tiny in comparison to the building, and where the dof is pretty shallow behind them. It almost looks chroma keyed. Thanks!

Re: T3i video...what is this lens??
It looks to me that they have done something with the footage in post, reason is that everything from the camera up to the couple is very sharp (the floor) and everything behind them is very blurred. One would expect if this was taken with a tele and wide open iris that everything from camera position up to the couple should start blurry and gradually get more sharp towards the couple.
Edit: maybe a tilt shift lens? |
Re: T3i video...what is this lens??
There's no particular lens for that effect -- it might have been done
with the stock 18-55mm lens. It's not done in post, either, but right in the camera. They're shooting in the Rebel's "miniature effect" feature, which is an option under Functions in the video recording mode. This effect is also included on some PowerShots such as the S95 and it's a lot of fun to play with. Hope this helps, |

Thanks, Chris! I don't own a Canon, but I wish I had that effect option in my GH2.

You can find tutorials to do it with bands of blur or CrumplePop makes a ready-made filter for it:

About the Miniature Effect function:
Basically it's an intervalometer, but you have to choose the size of the DOF "window." You can orient it to be vertical or horizontal, you can make it broad or shallow, but you can't turn off the DOF "window" completely. Which is a shame, because I'd love to use it for normal time-lapse without the miniature effect. It is a gimmick. A fun one, but not a replacement for a real intervalometer. |
Re: T3i video...what is this lens??
I'm not so sure if I liked the way that was filmed. Yes it was professional in terms of technical quality, but I found it to completely lack mood.
My guess is it's a tilt shift effect |
Re: T3i video...what is this lens??
That's basically what Miniature Effect does...
it combines an intervalometer function with an emulated tilt-shift effect, in-camera, no matter what lens you're using. |
