Phil Bloom blog post on shooting location narrative
Phil has a new blog post up about his experiences shooting a 1 day short with the 7D. Some good stuff in here for folks who are planning similar projects:

Thanks for getting this up Jenn. I was about to post a link!

I gave you 8 minutes, man! :)
Looks like the shoot went well, considering the light/time constraints. Can't wait to see the finished product. |
That post must have taken quite a bit of time- I'm glad Phil is willing to share his experiences with us.

Very good and detailed article. I find it interesting that he used such a high sharpness setting. Isn't the consensus to turn sharpness all the way down?
|
Yep, good on you Phil for posting your experience with this type of shoot and for giving so much detail. One point I noticed from your BTS shots was the lack of matte-box or lens hood. That's a compromise I'm rarely happy to make and would always recommend one or other. I haven't received my fader ND yet and wondered if using it on your shoot meant it was difficult to attach a hood?

yep vari-nd and matte box don't get very well together...cannot access the vari-nd to adjust

Nice work as always Phil. A number of bloggers have asked about your Neutral settings on the film. Did you set the sharpness one notch left from the centre position? I thought you may have got extra moire on the actor's tie or aliasing on the bricks.

This was greatly detailed and motivating. I love that you talked about the "on location" experience and not just about the camera. The owner kicking you out and you got some quick clips to wrap everything when he walked away! I loved it. You're definitely the best online mentor!

I may be shooting a commercial with my 5Dmk2 so this was really helpful. Thanks.
(Phil - I'm in Isleworth. If you are doing something similar again and want to borrow my Cool Lights LED 600 - it's battery powered and mounts on a stand etc - send me a message). |
