U2 on SNL

Anybody else catch U2's performance on Saturday Night Live tonight? I really dug that unrehearsed "I Will Follow" at the end of the show. Looked like nobody saw it coming, the camera operators were totally unprepared. Caught the cast off guard, too. What a show!

Ill be watching tonight as always! (west Coast)

I caught one of their performances, but didn't watch the whole show. Still can't bring myself to watch a post Mike Meyers/Dana Carvey SNL.

Dylan

I am liking the current crop of SNL. They lways go up and down but latley I have been enjoying it.

U2 last night was great. When they broke into 'I Will Follow' the whole place was trippin. It was AFTER the show was over; the cast was excited as was the audience. Bono went into the crowd and The Edge went off the stage and past the cameras.

It was very cool and that song brought back some cool memories. Thanks for the heads up Chris!

There was one point during "I Will Follow," where Bono stuck his face into one of the floor cameras (luckily the operator was zoomed out to full wide), and with his free hand Bono grabbed the lens by the mounting handle and tried to pull it around with him... would've made for a great shot, but it looked like the pedestal casters were locked, so he didn't get very far. I love when these moments make it to live television. Completely unrehearsed, the camera operators did as well as they possibly could but I was enjoying the obvious confusion they were having on the studio floor there. You could get a decent look at the camera crane and the rest of the set while they were chasing Bono and Edge around. It was a great performance, that particular song brought back a lot of memories for me too (it's been twenty years!) -- Luke Wilson did a decent job as the guest host but I'd love to get a copy of this particular show just for those three U2 performances alone. After all these years, they've still got it.

So true.

My wife and I were talking and I said that there isnt many bands that are of OUR generation (Me being 34 and her being 29) that still have it after 20 years. In fact, I cant think of really any.

Hearing 'I Will Follow' made me think how rare it is that artists
like U2 come around.

The Edge was jamming! I love his style of playing.

Man, I wish I would have stayed awake last night. My neighbor across the street is a MAJOR U2 fan. He says they are the greatest band ever. I am thinking of suggesting to his Santa Claus that there is a special edition U2 Ipod, including band autographs on the back for $349. And at the end of this month, they are supposedly going to release a special package including 'everything'' U2 has ever recorded, plus bonus tracks.

More info on Apple's website.

Did anybody see their live performans in NY? Must have been something!!

Charles Papert November 23rd, 2004 11:47 AM

In the late 80's I was pulling cable for the handheld stage cameras at some stadium shows, and thus got to be onstage for some amazing performances from that period such as Bowie, the Dead and Madonna, but none of them could match U2 on the Joshua Tree tour (the one that was captured for "Rattle and Hum"--I remember seeing the 16mm camera on stage also).

The thrill of crouching just feet away from the band that owned the world, watching them perform and listening to the sound coming out of the Edge's amp before being amplified to the masses (and also feeling the massive energy wave that 60,000 fans were sending towards the band) was incomparable and a memory I will keep forever. Still have the crew sweatshirt...

The other night, I watched the Rattle and Hum tour/concert on one of the InHD channels. Awesome, simply Awesome.

Alfred Okocha November 23rd, 2004 05:01 PM

Speaking about energy.. Can you imagine the feeling of having all those people chanting your name? That's a something for only a few chosen ones.. I mean I get a rush sometimes only being at a concert (not even on stage as Charles..) Imagine being the subject of that admiration..!
