Has anyone thought about or actually removed the external mic holder on the XH-A1? All my mics use the hot shoe mount and the holder on the camera seems like a wart. It looks like just two small screws would do it. But . . . .

I took it off. The 2 screws are all that is needed. I saved em in a zip lock bag with the holder in case I need to use it in the future.

Same here took it off and stored the screws/holder.

I took it off so that the cam would fit nicely in my backpack together with a Steadicam Merlin.

Recommend storing the screws on the camera, putting them back into the threaded inserts they came out of. That way you'll never lose the screws, and they'll keep dust etc. out of the threads.

Not as much as the mic mount

If they stick out a little bit (obviously I haven't tried this), then just get some tiny little bushings or washers to offset that distance.

I use my mic holder as a cord wrangler, it's actually large enough to wrangle the 6' component cable and the XLR power cord from my 12V battery to my Marshall monitor. I think it's great for cord wrangling, but what else would you use it for :).

If you need an additional shoe mount (or 2 !) you can utilize the stock mic mount. Check out my J-Rod accessory mount at the link in my signature. You will be happy with the mic mount all over again.....and the mic won't be in your shot !
