Hey all,

I read some posts asking about the differences in light between the 50mm 1.8 and the 55mm 1.2 (CANON FD).

As you'll see from the video, the lighting difference is aparent yet additionally the bokeh is increased with 55mm lens.

Although, the price for the 55mm is around $200.00 and the price for the 50mm is about $20.00.

Hope this helps,

Chris,
I think the real comparison is between 1.4 and 1.2 glass (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=97611). The price jump is still pretty big, considering 1.4 lenses are usually around $50.

I'm surprised you found a 55mm for around $200. Usually I see them at $250, $300+. I stole one off somebody for $70 a long time ago but it has scratches in the front element, a fleck of dirt inside, and the focus ring is impossible. Still produces some good images on an adapter though, so I keep it around.

Yeah Ben, I was lucky on an auction- as I said above paid $200.00 with an old F-1 package. You can still find these lenses around. I searched eBay and see one for $55.00 (although auction ending in two days.) Expect to pay $600.00 for the aspherical version though, which apparently is sharper.

Word of caution, these 55mm lenses contain a lot of glass. They are heavy and I'm concerned about damaging my XL2 mount. The entire rig seems top heavy with the 55mm installed.

I have yet to test some of the newer 1.2 L versions (both 50mm & 85mm) yet it seems they have comparable results.

normally the lenses you see going for 50 with 2 days to go end up at 100.

Ben.

If the focus on the 55mm is a bit stiff, it can be relubed and this will make all the difference. It is not a big job.
