Ok this is a weird thing. I'm trying to nip this bug in the bud before I have to really print some DVDs. I have Verbatim 8x dvd media to which I burned a few test videos. These burned at 2x since the Lite-on dvd burner I used is only that fast. I edited with FCP and burned the video with DVD Studio Pro. I didn't mess with any bit rates or anything since I have never even touched those settings.

The problem is this: someitmes, randomly, during playback, there will be a moment of a crack or loud scratchy sound in the audio accompanied by several artifacts on the screen. After which, normal clear playback will recommence. The thing that worries me about this symptom si that if I rewind the dvd and replay the erroreous spot, it won't happen again. I have tested this a few times.

Is it possible that my Phillips DVP642 dvd player is the problem? Am I possibly using too high of a bit rate on this dvd?

Any thoughts would be helpful.

The 642 is one of the best players I have ever seen; if it plays everything else, then it's not the problem. Also, try testing your DVD on many different players before making final decisions.

The first thing that comes to mind is your DVD burner: since it only works 2x, it is probably pretty old. In order to maximize compatibility, you need a recent burner with the latest driver software.

Personally I found that the best compatibility is achieved using a bit-setting enabled player and DVD+R blanks.

Yeah, I really enjoy my 642 for wide compatibility, even though it is really cheap and low quality.
The burner that I am using burns at 16x, but I burn at 2x to get a high quality burn. The breif distortions that I am getting happen on many brands of players, but I only use the 642 at home.

I think that we may have to try different combinations.
