Is it worth spending an extra bit of money (£50)ish on the NTG1 or 2?

hi Richard

I don't have the Sennheiser but own a NTG-2. I find it a pretty good mic for the money, and use it for most of my boom work.

Unless I'm mistaken, the main difference I think you'll find is that the Senny has a mini jack built in to attach to the camera as well as the screw on hotshoe mount, where as the Rode is a proper XLR shot gun which would plug into the XLR sockets of your camera...It would be far more versatile as it makes a great boom mic.

It largely depends what type of camera inputs you have.. (I don't know the XL1).. if you have only mic jack inputs, you'd need a Beachtek to use the Rode. If you have XLR inputs on the camera don't know why you'd want to use a mni jack mic, you'd need an adapter.

To my mind the Rode is worth the extra...I picked mine up for Hagues in Nottingham.

The XL1 doesnt come with XLR inputs, but I have the MA-200 which is the adapter for it to allow 4 XLR's.

What would I expect to pay for a full setup for the rode? I mean the mic, something to put around it and the mounts?
Ive seen some for sale and they say they come with these but how good are the standard pieces?

Thanks

Hi Richard

I still think you'd find the Rode a better buy in the long run... google their website and you'll see they have various accessories, shock mounts, camera mounts etc...

I paid about £150 from Hagues for mine. Wind jammer £25... Custom cable £12; Shock mount about £40..

The sound is pretty good for the price but it is a hotter mic than the AT897 I also have and picks up a bit of camera and handling noise, even with a shock mount. But I guess most on camera mics will do this to some extent.

cheers
Gareth
