How does HD-Link de-interlace 1080/50i to 1080/25p? Does it simply throw away one field? Or does it use smart motion-compensation like AviSynth's MVbob and then somehow halve the framerate?

My overall question is:

Can I make video shot as 1080/50i look "almost like" video shot 1080/25p?

Is HD-Link's de-interlace routine higher quality than PPro 2.0's?

When you say "it uses both to extract the best vertical res" does that mean that it blends and averages the two fields (i.e. that it produces ghosting)?

I will try it out myself one day soon but today I'm pretty busy.

Not quite, but there is typically more ghosting in algorthms that use both fields, just as there is typically more resolution. Ghosting = motion blur if your source shutter was 1/50th sec, this is the ideal side-effect if you have to have one.

Today I had to deinterlease animated footage with fast moving arrows. DV 50i to be played on a computer. It looked ugly, even after loading into premiere.
The HDlink does an ultimate job on it. I had arrows moving so fast it created interlease lines all over the image. Now I see arrows appearing after conversion.
Real good job. I'll create some stills if I have the time tomorrow.
