View Full Version : High speed driving through Sydney at night
Glenn Thomas June 24th, 2007, 10:38 PM I shot this a few weeks ago during a trip to the city and back, my wife was driving. I'd seen something like this before done on the XHA1, which I think was prove that you didn't need an overpriced variable frame rate camera to achieve shots like this. So I guess this is proof you don't even need something as expensive as an XHA1! There's a few parts that go out of focus, so I'll have to set the focus manually next time. But overall I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. There's a BIG plug for Canon in there, which I was going to remove, except that it kind of fit the change in the music.
Technical stuff - Shot in TV mode at 1/6 second shutter speed. Sped up in Vegas 4x, which is the maximum, rendered and then sped up 3x.
Anyway, here it is, roughly 83mb - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N2Y01FVY
Also, incase anyone's interested, I did the music using Acid 6 which took about 2 hours total. You can hear the full track on my MySpace page here - http://www.myspace.com/avene
Rafael Lopes June 25th, 2007, 12:45 AM "The file you are trying to access is temporarily unavailable"
Glenn Thomas June 25th, 2007, 01:50 AM That's weird, I just tested it and works fine.
Steve Jones June 25th, 2007, 01:08 PM Hi Glenn,
I'm also getting "The file you are trying to access is temporarily unavailable."
best,
Steve.
Mikon Haaksman June 25th, 2007, 01:52 PM Me too. Can't access
Glenn Thomas June 25th, 2007, 02:31 PM Strange, it still works here. I'll upload it to my Stage 6 page.. That should work.
Steve MacDonald June 26th, 2007, 01:41 PM The download worked for me. Man your wife drives fast!! Very nicely done. This reminds me of...forget his name, but he's famous for all his high speed, high def footage on INHD channel.
Glenn Thomas June 26th, 2007, 10:22 PM Hi Steve, thanks, glad someone got it to work! I don't know of the guy you're talking about, but curious to see what he's done. Might have a look.
The clip's just been published on my Stage 6 page, which took a while. It's a 720P version also. URL - http://stage6.divx.com/user/avene This should stream in realtime once it's buffered for a few seconds. Can be downloaded too of course. Roughly 63mb
I've also posted it to my Myspace videos page if you're on a slower connection. URL - http://www.myspace.com/avenemovies
The WMV version is still the best, if you can get it to work.
Rob Rollin June 30th, 2007, 11:54 PM It looks really cool!
Like the editing and the music fit well, good job and thx for sharing!
Cheers!
Brad Vaughan July 1st, 2007, 09:17 PM That is just superb!
Seriously, that turned out really really nice!
?
When you say "1/6 second shutter speed"...
how do you set that with the cam?
Blake Calhoun July 2nd, 2007, 09:47 AM Nice work. Curious, how'd you mount the camera? Looked pretty steady. Thanks.
Glenn Thomas July 11th, 2007, 11:40 AM Thanks for the comments. I had the camera in TV mode with the shutter speed set to 1/6. It was on a small Manfrotto tripod that I held onto. There wasn't much space for it though.
Mark Ross July 13th, 2007, 12:41 PM Nice, nice, NICE! Very inspirational.
Glenn Thomas July 14th, 2007, 02:20 AM Hi Mark, thanks for the kind comment. First time anyone's ever called something I've done inspirational!
Matt Crosby July 14th, 2007, 03:53 AM Loved this Glenn. Can see why you didn't want to cut the canon sign - it does fit the music! Did you zoom in to the back of the bus, or was that just the motion of the bus and your car? And the music is nice too... well done!
m
Glenn Thomas July 14th, 2007, 05:09 AM Hi Matt, and thanks :) Yeah, at least Canon get a decent plug in there.
No, there was no zooming, the bus just kept stopping. It was peak hour late afternoon here and there were less lanes open for travelling into the city which is why the traffic became a bit congested.
I might try this again sometime with the focus issue sorted. Also need to find a way of speeding up the footage in Vegas more than 400%. I'm sure there's a script that can do this, I just need to track it down.
Oh, one thing I keep forgetting to mention. Look out for the truck in front of us towards the start of the clip being flashed by the red light camera. It only lasts 2 frames. You can easiliy see the lights were already red before he went through. I'm not sure the exact fine, but it would have cost him at least $100.
Mike Dulay July 26th, 2007, 05:58 AM Nice video! Did you do color correction to generate the final WMV or have special in camera tricks to reduce the low light grain? I tried something similar with TV-6 setting without adjusting the exposure.
Glenn Thomas July 29th, 2007, 08:10 AM Hi Mike, all I did was adjust the overall levels using the histogram as a guide. Mostly just to bring the blacks. At the 1/6 shutter speed there wasn't much low light grain, so that helped improve the image quality a bit.
Mike Dulay August 2nd, 2007, 04:57 PM Glenn, funny thing with my attempt there was some visible grain in the sky where it was pitch black sky. Crushed them out with color curves and the effect of compression seemed to help too. Its not as interesting as sydney but here's my night drive through the suburbs to a city.

Glenn Thomas January 1st, 2008, 09:22 PM Hi Mike, can't believe it's taken me 5 months to check back on this thread! Need to visit here more often. Great looking clip. Looks like you've got some nice freeways there to make the overall trip run a lot smoother.
Now I'm inspired to do another one. The fireworks footage my wife shot from the car as I drove accross the bridge the other night didn't come out as well as I hoped it would. Bit too shakey.. Should have just set up the tripod.
