Uber low budget short film. I don't want to go with the onboard mic because I've done the stupid thing before, with terrible results.

I'm going to have to rent. I want a mic, boom and mixer - can't afford top quality but don't want it to be totally terrible. What should I be getting and what is a good rental price?
