Hey guys.. Being relatively new to HD production, I have a rather simple question that I'm not quite sure of.

I hear people all the time say they edit their HD timelines in their NLE and then export the timeline when they are finished back to tape (miniDV).

What are the reasons for exporting your finished project back to tape?

Doing so will give you a hard copy for archival purposes.

Also you'll find when you shoot a bit and get loads of raw footage on your hard drives you run out of space..... I've got over 2000gbs of hard drives... with various projects, raw files and edits on...

Simply sticking back onto a 5 Euro cassette is by far the cheapest way of archiving the footage....as opposed to buying yet another hard drive... you then get into the problem of not having enough USB ports... (bit like not havign enough electric points..LOL!!)

It does however have the disadvantage of being linear again which means you have to re-import it...

Can't have it all ways yet!!

Exporting a finished project to tape so you can deliver it to your client.....
You clients don't want your hard drive, they want a tape to play.....

Also, if you have a tape master it's easier to get dubs made in whatever format a festival might want. At our local festival here ( http://www.kansasfilm.com ) we want DV/DVCAM or Betacam SP tapes. We don't take DVDs because there are way too many problems that have arisen from self-authored DVDs.

Do you guys lay back to HDV tape? I have not done that (yet).

I've either downconverted and gone to DVCAM (or SD mini DV) or Beta SP for a client copy and/or my SD master, or typically I create an HD Quicktime file for archiving. I also have gone out to HDCAM and D-5 HD, but never HDV.

I edit in Avid so I'm not really editing in HDV anyway, I typically edt in a 1080p24 project with the DNxHD 175 codec. For 24p stuff anyway.

Just curious...

I make tape masters on HDV, DV 4:3 and a DV 16:9. As well as other formats which I archive on hard disc or optical.

Easiest way for me right now to make my finished HD work "portable" until blu-ray or HD DVD become prevalent.
