Can't find the proper sub forum for this so I'm putting it here :)

I have a Manfrotto 521Pro LANC attached to my A1U. I'd like to extend the cable another 10 or more feet from the cam so I can focus from a distance. Does anyone know if this is possible and what kind of cable I'd need?

Search B&H for "lanc cable" and you should come up with four or five different lengths...

So a Lanc cable is a Lanc cable is a Lanc cable...
Nothing special?

Hi Darren,

I picked up two coiled extention cords from Radio Shack a couple years back, I think they were made for Cell Phone Head Set extentions ???

I use them with my Sony T-Pod Remote Control Handles, which I dismount and use freehand with my Cams.

I have used 100' cable several times without problems with VariZoom Rock lanc controller. I have used this cable: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/282119-REG/Varizoom_VZEXTL100_VZEXTL100_100_LANC_Extension.html

I think LANC is LANC. What I'd be curious about is whether any cable with the right size connectors (stereo? mono?) would work, or whether there's anything special about a LANC cable.

You'll find you can use an RS 2.5mm cable to extend the LANC. There is a length limit, I can't recall off-hand what it is, but have run 20 feet with them without issue.

Lanc: A two wire connection. Probably all sorts of caveats and protocols but, in essence, any 2 core cable with a 2.5mm mono plug on one end and a 2.5 mm mono line socket will do the job. You can buy the bits @ Radio Shack or any other electronics store for peanuts and make one practically any length you want.

If you want to get fancy, use single core, shielded - runs, oh, about 200 feet so far for me without problems. Can't tell over longer distances as have never needed it.

I've got a thread running over on the HV20 site all about making wired Lancs from IR remotes. Give it a spin.

Cheers,

Chris

No, the Lanc in question (200+ feet) was a "pukka" Canon Lanc running to a Lanc enabled Canon camera (1000 Lanc beside my armchair in the lounge to an XL1s at the bottom of the garden whilst "shooting" urban foxes in the UK).

Hey, this is NOT rocket science!

Cheers,

Chris
