I am editing a few projects and have completely filled my new Mac pro that has 750gigs of HD space.
I am need of a couple externals to back up my video files and would like to hear what you have had success with. I have a Lacie 500g and a maxtor 250g and they both seem ok.
I am thinking I should get a 1tb external or two.
Locally I can source a lacie 1tb triple extreme but the vendor wants $688 + 25 for shipping.
How are the Western Digital line of externals??

We currently have 5 external HDDs! (one a Seagate 300g and 120g, the other is a frankenstein brand 160g model, and the other two are the Western Digital MyBook 500g edition with usb and firewire)

So far, the WD MyBook has been working pretty good for us; we use it mainly to backup old projects/footage/files to make room for our internal 300g drive. We bought ours for $249 each at a big warehouse chain a few months back, so they might be cheaper now.

If you're only storing/backing up old projects, I'd say a Seagate or Western Digital ext. hdd will work. Or you could always buy an internal hdd, a case with usb/firewire connections, and build an external hdd yourself.

The Lacie Two Big's are pretty awesome. You'll need an eSATA PCI-e card though. With it you can push more than 100/MB/sec in the Fast mode. It should cost less than the triple extreme and will definitely be faster than FW800. There's a video on our site...

I use a Laicie d2 Quadra with an eSATA adaptor for my MacBook Pro. It works great and I use it for storing data for my current projects, as well as back up. With the setup I have, it is actually faster than the internal drive.

Is this something I will need when transferring data from my MPro. Or can I just the firewire.
At what point does a guy go with raid setup for reliablilty???

I am using the Seagate FreeAgent external drive. It has USB, firewire and esata connectivity. I have it hooked up via firewire and it is really fast. Here is a link

Buying huge drives might sound cool, but it's too risky.
I never keep anything more than three projects on a single physical drive.

I have two Western Digital hard drives that I've had for a few years now and never had a problem. I recently purchased a My Book Pro Edition 500g for $179. Works great so far and surprisingly enough I found it cheaper on Dell's website than anywhere else. Here's the link if your interested.
