Do they make lights for the shoe on canon cameras that can use the canon battery through the camera? Or do you always buy a light battery pack for the belt.

The Canon VL-10Li is a 10-watt video light. It accepts a Lithium-Ion battery pack (BP950G or BP970G not included at purchase) for power and is attached directly to the camera's accessory shoe.

Another option you may be interested in is Anton Bauers ELIGHTZ
ElightZ mounts quickly and easily to any camera mounting type - shoe or stud - Take a look at it by visiting http://www.antonbauer.com/elightz.htm

ElightZ shares power with the ElipZ 10k battery through its exclusive Powerplug connector. Take a look at their battery system at http://www.antonbauer.com/elipz.htm

I just ordered the Anton Bauer from Scott. Can't wait to get it. Seems like a comprehensive solution to battery power management and lighting. Share my thoughts after I've used it.

The Anton Bauer Elightz/Elipz battery/on-camera light arrived. Since there is already another thread on this subject, I'll post my impressions there.
