View Full Version : Lens hood or shade recommended?
Ken Jarstad May 25th, 2007, 02:44 PM The more expensive camcorders all seem to come with some sort of lens hood or shade but the HV20 does not. Is a lens hood recommended for amateur use of the the HV20 and, if so, are there any units that are known to work well - within the zoom range of this camcorder?
Povl H. Pedersen May 26th, 2007, 03:07 AM I would say it is highly recommended. I see way too much lens flare. I have not been looking for any yet. I know you can buy some rubber lens hoods, but have not seen them, and do not know how to mount them.
Now that I have a UV filter and a pol filter, the problem is only bigger.

I posted this on the DVXuser forums, hope it's ok that I post their link here, saves me having to upload the image again. On page 1, near the bottom, my post (batesey). Works really well and looks pretty cool IMO...
Hope this helps.
Ken Jarstad May 26th, 2007, 05:44 PM The picture of the JVC camcorder built-in hood is exacly what I mean. Looks great and is likely benefitial. I didn't register on dvxuser.com so couldn't view your pictures.
Does the silver colored hood match the body color of the HV20 or is it better to get an all black one? Also, it looks as though the hood is simply tightened by thrumbscrew onto an included UV filter. Perhaps it wouldn't even attach without a filter?
Lou Bruno May 26th, 2007, 06:18 PM Is that a small toilet bowl plunger in the top figure?
Yours looks awesome with the rectangular look.

That’s right, That version of the hood wont fit without a filter, in my case a 43mm UV. There is another version of the hood, one that screws onto the camera and effectively replaces a filter. I believe that there is a thread inside the hood to attach a filter, but it would put the glass to far in front of the lens, likely to cause vignetting and more pronounced lens flares. The reason I chose the hood that I have (black) is 1. I think it looks cool...LOL (it’s actually not jet black, and not a bad match for the rear part of the cam and 2. felt it was better to put a filter on first and then the hood. It also seems (to me) to be quicker to remove the hood in situations where it may not be practical to use. Also, the silver hood from TOKBANDIT's Cam looks like a perfect colour match...to me anyway :-)
Hope this helps.
Ken Jarstad May 29th, 2007, 11:20 PM Thank you, everyone, for the advice.
Fergus Anderson May 30th, 2007, 09:14 AM Anyone thought about this as a lense hood:

Jeroen Verhoeven May 31st, 2007, 10:45 AM That's exactly the same one as Tony's here from Ebay............
Jules Ruez May 31st, 2007, 11:20 AM I bought one of the ones off Ebay. It should be here in a couple of days. I'll let you know how it is.
Marc Ramirez June 1st, 2007, 01:57 PM I bought that lens hood in the silver finish. It looks great on the camera. If I was allowed to post attachments, I would post a picture of it.
Adam Perry June 1st, 2007, 02:39 PM someone mentioned that the lens hood blocked the focus sensor...can anyone confirm this?
Fergus Anderson June 1st, 2007, 02:47 PM Yes I had that thought - I wonder if anyone can confirm?
you could upload a picture to imageshack and link on here

You could try flickr. I want to see since I just bought one today!
Victor Horz June 1st, 2007, 04:12 PM I went straight for the mattebox+frenchflag for shade/hood

Victor Horz June 1st, 2007, 04:26 PM Its a mattbox + reg frenchflag from cinetactics.com. No vignetting and very portable.
Jules Ruez June 4th, 2007, 08:11 PM I got one of the cheap ones off Ebay. It doesn't block the auto focus from what I could tell. I zoomed in and out a bunch of times and it didn't have any problems focusing.
It fits well, and it came with a cover. It fit perfectly on my UV filter.

Hi there, thanks for posting the pictures, how is this setup working for you? Where could I buy that nifty lens hood that you've got on your HV20? Do you like your shotgun mic that you've got on there?
Thanks!

You can get it from the above

But how do you get that 'mattebox' to attach to the tapered front of the HV20 without having that wide-angle lens threaded to the front (or whatever attachment you have on there)?

You don't. I suppose you could just get a step-up ring, say a 43mm to 75mm or something like that and then attach the shade to that. Dunno if the step-up ring would be thick enough, but it might work. Keep in mind though, because of the size of the shade, you are gonna lose the ability to use Auto-focus, the light and the flash.

Yeah, I don't like that hood anyway; I was just wondering how it might even work on the HV20 without additional hardware.
Marc Ramirez June 7th, 2007, 03:38 PM How come some people can post pictures and others cannot? I want to post a picture of the Fotodiox hood on the hv20. Looks nice. The instant focus sensor is blocked with it on however.
Ian Albinson June 8th, 2007, 11:02 AM Received my hood yesterday!

Peter J Alessandria June 8th, 2007, 11:12 AM Ian - You can't mount the hood without a filter right? (At least you couldn't on the one I got from GoShot camera - ebay seller). So the problem is, with a standard UV filter you get reflections/flaring from the glass filter (more expensive coated ones perhaps not). With the UV they sent with the hood I noticed the flaring right away. So I returned it and ordered a 43mm hood that screws directly to the camera itself.
Ian Albinson June 8th, 2007, 11:22 AM Ian - You can't mount the hood without a filter right?
Actually it came with a 43mm ring, and that's how it mounts to the camera. That ring is also threaded, so you could either add filter + ring + hood, or ring + filter + hood without an issue.
Miguel Quiles June 8th, 2007, 11:45 AM Did you notice any issues with the autofocus? That hood looks great!
Ian Albinson June 8th, 2007, 12:32 PM Did you notice any issues with the autofocus? That hood looks great!
It seems to slow the I-AF down a little, but that's not really an issue for me.
Ian Albinson June 8th, 2007, 12:55 PM I've also ordered one of these for my wide angle WD-H46 lens. It's not the standard H43 that Canon recommends, but with a step-up ring it's been working very well, though flare is a big issue. Hopefully this will solve it.

Jeroen Verhoeven June 10th, 2007, 05:39 AM Actually I recieved mine yesterday, it's the same as Ian's but in black. I mounted the supplied ring in front of my B&W UV filter and I set it so I can easily screw it on and off without re- adjusting the set screw.
I hardly notice any interference with IAF, if any......
Joey Atilano August 3rd, 2007, 10:23 AM Ian, how did the WD-H46 work out for you ?
Fergus Anderson August 3rd, 2007, 10:39 AM Hi guys can anyone recomend me a hood that will fit onto the fron of the Raynox 6600 72mm)? I dont want it to come into the filed of view at fully wide
thanks
