Thomas Weilguny March 22nd, 2008, 11:30 AM this is the first test vid from a short film about a legend surrounding the castle i work at. we want to recreate a semi-plausible silent film look, the whole thing will be intercut with footage from tourists / kids listening to the story being told.

Martin Labelle March 22nd, 2008, 08:19 PM I really like the trailer, and the voice of the narrator. It really wants to make me see the movie. But I don't like on the website to see the youtube version
I know its youtube but your encoding should be better. So maybe not show the youtube version if you cannot bring it better. For the mpeg it could be better again encoding or delivery quality.Work a bit harder on that. its not hollywood but your trailer can be the same quality if you do not have the same budget for the film. But I still would like to see the film, and its been a long time I had not a desire for a children movie.
Niall Chadwick March 25th, 2008, 05:30 AM Tried to do some more camera tests with my V1 this weekend, and attempted to do some shots with a shallow DoF.
Link : http://www.vimeo.com/822459
This was down the bottom of the garden of my fathers house. I setup the camera outside, but heard thunder, so open the garden shed in case it poured. As you can see from the footage, the heavens opened.
Lessons I learned from this :
1. Let tripod settle before recording, as max zoom amplifies movement
2. Any touching of the camera/tripod creates wobble (ie stand still)
3. Remove the lanc controller from the Tripod, so I dont add wobble when using it
4. Practice Focus pulling more. :)
There has been no post production changes made to the footage. I know some (if not all :() of the shots have a bit of a wobble. But I would appreciate comments on shot selection, or anything else you might wish to add.
Thanks in advance.
Niall
Oliver Pahlow March 25th, 2008, 06:25 PM I have been experimenting (and I'm sure it has been done a million times) of creating the illusion of movement with a single image. This is an attempt on my part to make a reentry scene from space using lighting effects and pan on a single image.

Loney Childress March 26th, 2008, 01:35 AM Hey, I thought they were both good. Deffinitely liked the Fear Factor-esqu one.
Either way, deffintely funny on both of them and they look like they were shot well.
I entered this contest as well. In fact I did one and helped my brother with his. If you're interested I'll put up the links for you.
Good luck and hope you had fun.
David Carter March 26th, 2008, 03:43 AM I liked that. I think it works so well as you are far away from the object you are animating over. It effectively becomes a background for your effects. Thanks.
Oliver Pahlow March 26th, 2008, 08:54 AM Thanks David
John Lofton IV March 28th, 2008, 11:21 AM Hey Oliver,
Pretty cool effect. Kind of slow for my taste, but I could see it as being used for an opening credits scene.
Check out my vid, I used some cool sfx in FCP. It's called, "Tunnel Vision"
Bryan Gilchrist March 28th, 2008, 03:05 PM The first one was ok, a little cheesy...but good none the less.
I think the second one got the message across a bit better, though.
Kent Frost March 28th, 2008, 07:08 PM A quick little fun clip I put together from footage I shot last weekend.
Shot with Canon S5 IS, edited in Vegas 8.0 Pro.

Kent Frost March 28th, 2008, 07:15 PM This is a video of me and some friends when we drove from Springfield, Missouri to Fayetteville, AR. For the most part, this project was for practice in editing. I haven't done any video projects for about 6 or 7 years, so it was nice to stretch my wings again.
Some of the verbal content may not be safe for work.

David Carter March 28th, 2008, 08:37 PM nice smooth speed up and slow down. I tried to do that with a project i did a few weeks back and had to speed up and slow down in increments. Yours looked goooood and a lot smoother than mine... cheers for adding it
Kent Frost March 28th, 2008, 08:42 PM I appreciate the comment. Actually, I'd like to invest in a good neutral density filter so the shutter can stay open longer for each frame. That way the repeated frames will actually appear fluid rather than simply stacked. You can spot it pretty easily on the signs at the slow ends of the clip.
Kris Bird March 28th, 2008, 08:45 PM Hi all- just finished principle photography on our scottish thriller/horror feature, "The Dead Outside"

Tony Sexton March 31st, 2008, 01:57 AM Hey guys,
Here is a promo I've just completed for a Fashion Show sponsored by a local newspaper (Louisville Eccentric Observer - LEO Weekly). All shots were done with an A1 and using a monopod as a stabilizer.
http://www.vimeo.com/833429
http://leoweekly.com/?q=promotions (it's the video at the top, and while you're at it, check out the pics too...some very hot models were involved in this one)
Enjoy and let me know what you think.
Tony
John C. Plunkett March 31st, 2008, 03:22 PM Right at 16 seconds I thought you replaced the actor with a mannequin. I've never seen such dead eyes in a video before. That would be cool in a certain context.
John C. Plunkett March 31st, 2008, 03:40 PM Here are some of the recent spots I've done. They aren't great, but I'm learning as I go. The first is one for the company I work for and was done entirely in Motion 3. The second is for an audio/video component store and was edited edited in FCP, chroma keyed in Color and motion mattes and motion tracking was done in Motion 3.
http://www.gonadsgo.com/video/casscomm_standalone.mov
http://www.gonadsgo.com/video/sundownone.mov
I have my own issues with these spots, but I would like to hear from others on ways I could improve these and future spots.
Matthew Overstreet March 31st, 2008, 10:24 PM Now posted on Vimeo. What a great site.

Oliver Pahlow April 1st, 2008, 10:16 AM Thanks John, I'll check it out.

John C. Plunkett April 2nd, 2008, 07:55 AM The mood is good. Definitely seems like a background piece for something else (credits, compositing). The movement of the lens flare could use some work to help make it more cohesive to the moving image, but other than that it's nice.

James Binder April 2nd, 2008, 03:28 PM Here's a music video...
http://www.vimeo.com/835920
...created for my wife for an internet singing competition. If you like Rascal Flatts, you'll love this! It was a great project that really put my XH-A1 though its paces (lots of steadicams shots). Make sure the 'HD' button is active on the video at Vimeo -- looks WAY better than the standard def version.
If you like her perfomance, go give her a vote as well! :-)
http://www.brickfish.com/Pages/VideosSeries/VideoView.aspx?vid=5002_85725688&=PBB_RascalFlatts_240_PPIMEMAIL_PPIMEMAIL&isep=1&pbapi=-1&pbvi=14572862
BTW -- the compression quality is horrible on the competition site, that's why I put it up on Vimeo for others to see (who have a more critical eye :-). Check out the Vimeo link first!
Ken Civian April 2nd, 2008, 04:37 PM I'm not getting audio on the Vimeo site and it looks like you have a bad link for the other one.
James Binder April 2nd, 2008, 05:24 PM Ken --
I just fixed the competition site link above -- should work now. You can see the video there, but the quality is VERY poor -- that's why I included the Vimeo link.
Not sure what the problem is with the Vimeo link (I can't get the audio either!) -- It's been fine for the last few days. Looking into it now...
I may have to reupload the Hd Vimeo version.
Thanks
Sean Walsh April 2nd, 2008, 05:37 PM Hi James,
Great stuff, really like the clean, simple approach - it belies your great camera work.
Still no audio though!
BTW - what were your encoding settings? I'm having real trouble outputting any of my work at anything like half-decent quality.
Sean
**UPDATE**
Just watched the video on the Brickfish site - really enjoyed it...
I might have been tempted to squeeze a lens flare in somewhere, but that's just me - and I might also have gone for a couple more moody close ups of her not singing...but that's a question of style and taste.
Again, I really like the clean approach - nothing over-produced or complex - just shot really, really well. Well done! S
Allen Plowman April 2nd, 2008, 07:07 PM I had no audio on your vimeo, I found the vimeo volume control, it was turned all the way down. turned it up and it sounded great :)
James Binder April 2nd, 2008, 07:36 PM Yes -- *the audio on the video control/player (in Vimeo) was turned all the way down by default for some reason!* (bottom right of video player)
Once I turned it up -- all was well.
Thanks Allen
Sean --
Thanks for the constructive comments and compliments -- much appreciated. Yes, I probably could have put a few more non-singing shots in there, and perhaps another lens flare (I do have a couple in there :-)
Thanks again for the great feedback!
Try turning up the audio control on the Vimeo video player and see if that works...
Will Leamon April 3rd, 2008, 09:48 AM This is our latest short - a poke at modern pharmaceutical advertising.
Would appreciate any and all feedback. You can check out all of our other shorts from the site as well.

Oliver Pahlow April 3rd, 2008, 11:51 AM Thank you John P. This was my first attempt at something like this. Thanks for taking the time to look at it and your comments.
Oliver
Sean Vincent April 3rd, 2008, 02:00 PM Hi Richard
Thanks for the comments, they are much appreciated. As i'm sure you know, it's hard to be objective when you're writing, producing and acting in the same production...especially when it's our first.
I think you're right about the music not helping with the trailer. It was actually a piece of music written for the intro of the film itself rather than specifically for the trailer. We'll make sure the actual release version of the trailer is much more focussed.
Thanks again.. the more input the better!
Sean
Konrad Czystowski April 3rd, 2008, 10:01 PM I've always watched only. A lot of great videos from you guys on this site.
I wanted to share a little too. My skills are getting better. In my opinion at least :)
This is 24p test with A1 and glidecam. I was always scared to shoot 24p, as I thought that there will be a lot of strobing effect, if I don't know how to do it well. But now I'm in love with 24p.
The other clips there are a little older (shot last year), so don't judge me on those...
There are 2 test clips there:

Any feedback would be appreciated.
Robert Kegley April 3rd, 2008, 10:29 PM I'm a high school student and this was made as a film lab in my Film Production class.
Assignment: No sound and the camera had to be the POV of a character.
Let me know what you think!

Daniel Vanniekerk April 4th, 2008, 02:39 AM Excellent stuff. Very smooth and well composed! Question - which vest and arm do you use?
Daniel
Konrad Czystowski April 4th, 2008, 08:26 AM Thanks Daniel.
For this one I didn't use the vest.
I'm using smooth shooter arm and vest. This was actually my first time ever without arm and vest.
My glidecam weighted 18 pounds before, for better stability with smooth shooter. Now I removed all the extra weights and tried it handheld for the first time. There is a lot more movement allowed, mostly with the dynamic shots.
Benjamin Hill April 4th, 2008, 10:25 AM 30-sec preview for my forthcoming documentary. Shot on Canon HDV cameras if anyone cares. Thanks for looking.
