View Full Version : Show Your Work 2008
Chris Davis June 8th, 2008, 02:50 PM Anybody here made a promotional video for their videography business? I'm not talking about a demo reel, but rather a fully narrated/scripted promo.
I've got a demo reel, and I've found it works well for those business that have already decided to make a video. What I'd like to see is a video that sells not only your services, but the general idea of business video. Something you'd show to someone who is thinking "what can video do for me?"
I'm looking at making something like that for our business and would like to see what others have done.
Dennis Murphy June 8th, 2008, 02:54 PM I loved the vibe of the whole thing. It had a quirkyness that was compelling to watch.
Will someone please call an official end to all things 'gangsta' when it comes to rap/hip hop/R&B?
Joe Busch June 9th, 2008, 06:23 AM http://lousyhero.com/videos/epicprev2.wmv
or in 1080p HD
http://lousyhero.com/videos/epicprev2hd.wmv
Just something I put together in a couple hours, I've been working on a bigger video (no real purpose/direction, just showing off cool shots and capturing some events) but I'm pretty lazy.
After my camera gets back from Sony, I'll be selling it and getting into paintball photography for a while.
Either way, just seeing what DVi thought :)
Jim Miller June 9th, 2008, 07:51 AM Very nice job of putting this together. I like the color too. Amazing what you can do with that little camera!
Shaun Roemich June 9th, 2008, 08:50 AM Man, I miss playing... never played Speedball though, more of an Urban Ops player. Thanks for the memories and great Slo-Mo!
Terry Lee June 9th, 2008, 09:08 AM Very nice time lapse of the sky in the begining....although there are two spots on the filter :)
Nice slow motion...What camera are you using?
Joe Busch June 9th, 2008, 12:01 PM Yea the filter was dirty, it was a quick time-lapse, I threw the camera up at the end of the day, it got real cloudy and started dumping rain, I grabbed the camera right after that :)
HDR-FX7...
Marco Menestrina June 9th, 2008, 04:25 PM Gangsta? What's that? :)
Herminio Cordido June 10th, 2008, 11:27 AM I just updated my cinematography demo reel.
any thoughts and feedback would be truly apreciated.

Michael Pulcinella June 10th, 2008, 08:15 PM Beautiful trailer!!
Mark Utley June 11th, 2008, 01:10 AM I just did my first demo reel and am fairly happy with it. This is footage I've shot over the past year. I'm happy to say I had three freelance offers in the first 24 hours of posting it to facebook!
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=16670414631
(let me know if the link doesn't work. I'll post it to Vimeo when I have time)
I'll probably do another one in six months so any suggestions on how it could be done better would be appreciated. Thanks!
Phil Kay June 11th, 2008, 01:42 AM Very nice indeed! I added you as a FB friend I liked it that much.....;0)
Andzei Matsukevits June 11th, 2008, 03:56 AM i dont have a facebook acount, but its required for seeing your video. Would be cool, if u had some other link...

Michael Azzariti June 11th, 2008, 07:13 PM Nice job. Lot's of good camera moves. Could you explain how you got some of the shots?
Paul,
I've been doing table top shooting for TV commercials for about twenty years now, so I used the tricks I learned along the way. I hope this helps.
All kidding aside, I used a mechanical DC powered turntable (adjustable speed and direction) a large diffused light as key, hard red rim light, less diffused fill on the right with red and blue gel.. A bare fixture gelled blue for the background. Also a few kicker cards as needed to open up some shadows. I shot the turntable at a steady speed, and in one or two shots stopped the table and reversed direction in the shot.
I used an Indian copy of the RedRocks DOF adapter with Nikon 50mm 1.8 and 100mm 2.8. The awful ground glass shows clearly in the background. I shot using my Panasonic HVX200 using the cine gamma at 720 30p.
In post production / edit, using Premier Pro CS3 and cutting to a music track, I used the razor tool to slice each individual scene into three scenes: the in, the hero and the out. I then used the time rate tool to compress the in and the out to a very quick pace. Since the scenes were cut from the same scene, the abrupt speed change appears to be done in-camera. This is most apparent in the scene involving the cut-away sprocket set. A bit of color correction and what you see is the result.

Paul Cascio June 11th, 2008, 07:55 PM Thanks Michael. Again, nice job and a very thorough look behind the scenes.

Put together for Bloom's first film competition and or excuse to go shoot. Put some self imposed restrictions on myself mainly;
One person, one camera, one light, amd one location.
This short was inspired by Ted Nugent's "Journey to the Center of your Mind". Passing and exploring the dark recesses of one's individual psyche.
Comments are welcome

Mark Utley June 11th, 2008, 11:02 PM Thanks, Phil!
Okay, here's the Vimeo link:

The aspect ratio came out wrong but that's what's great about Vimeo's replace feature. I'll have to do that tomorrow.
Oliver Reik June 12th, 2008, 02:12 AM Great vid as always. :)
I would like to try this game too - sadly none of my buddies or colleagues is interested in playing it. :(
Cheers,
Oliver
Phil Kay June 12th, 2008, 05:49 AM Absolutely superb! Really well thought out and masterfully shot. Wizard!
That mono footage is extremely clean and crisp, impressive.
Mike Williams June 12th, 2008, 11:16 AM Really cool Mike! The thing that struck me the most was how good it looked for web compression. Super clean!
Mark Bournes June 12th, 2008, 06:20 PM Jeff, Very nice. I'm curious, If you shot it with the XL-2, why did you guys shoot 4/3 instead of 16/9?
I just finished a pilot, that I too shot with the XL-2 but shot it 16/9.
You can check it out on my website. www.sharkvp.com.
Another question. Are you guys selling the DVD yourselves? Are you pitching it to any networks?
I've always wanted to go to monument valley, I bet you had a great time shooting there.
Mark Bournes June 12th, 2008, 06:33 PM My company just finished a tv pilot. The show is called 15 Minutes. It's about everyday people who have amazing stories, who otherwise would not have an outlet to tell their story. That's where the show comes in, and how we came up with the title for the series.
Everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame.
We shot the entire episode with a Canon XL-2, 16/9. Some of it was shot 24p.
We used a 5 piece lighting kit, various lights and azden wireless mics.
We are currently shopping it to networks. The goal is to get it picked up as a series.
The trailer is on the main page of our website. www.sharkvp.com
Sorry tried to upload the clip here but it wouldn't load.
Jeff Anselmo June 12th, 2008, 07:55 PM Hi Michael,
Thanks for the compliment!
Hi Mark,
It's prolly the trailer (had a helluva time exporting to the web!), but we did shoot in 16x9. The Film Baby site http://www.filmbaby.com/films/3003 that shows our trailer was encoded in 4x3! On our website http://madjavaproductions.com/915.html which shows a better quality res, shows it in 4x3 also; just hadn't had time to update it.
We didn't want to do e-commerce through our website (actually didn't know how to :), so we thought we'd distribute through Film Baby instead. And no we're not pitching to any networks. We were commissioned to produce the documentary to be shown at Goulding's Lodge's small theater in Monument Valley, so the intention was always for that. We were even reluctant to enter it in film festivals :)
If you do get a chance, Monument Valley is a worthwhile trip. There are other trips nearby that is worth going to. Check out Jim Miller's bike trip with his XHA1 through the southwest, and this one is near Monument Valley-- http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=122798
We actually produced a promo tourism dvd for San Juan County, Utah, which a chunk of Monument Valley is a part of. Hope to post videos of those soon!
Best,
Jeff Anselmo June 12th, 2008, 08:07 PM Hi Mark,
Very well done, and very professional looking trailer. Really like the graphics, and title page. From the little I saw of the interviews, I thought they looked good, and felt interesting (would like to see more of the guy's involvement with the martial arts, as I used to practice oh-so-long-ago :)
I'm always impressed of people's websites that can play flash movies. Might ask for some pointers on how you do that...
Best,
Daniel Lopez June 13th, 2008, 09:00 PM I thought it was pretty freakin cool stuff. Great work and the music was really working as well.
Andzei Matsukevits June 14th, 2008, 08:36 AM really really liked the shot at 3.15
I thought it was a bit too long, i think you should make an shorter version also, so if some busy producers are watching it, they'll get the idea quicker(you should also put that 3.15 shot somewere in beginning, it will make a person watch till end)
Jack Zhang June 15th, 2008, 07:16 AM http://www.vimeo.com/1174238
I uploaded this in XviD 1080p60 @ 19Mbps so registered users on Vimeo can download the original to play on high end machines or the PlayStation 3 at the latest firmware.
Martin Labelle June 16th, 2008, 09:19 AM Hello
After my beloved Sony A1U failed me(after ingesting Maxell cassette bought at gas station)
I had to continue filming, I had time to film the British Red arrows on a another(sony tape) but I missed the Thunderbirds, and the Blue Angels cancelled due to bad weather.
So I used my Macbook pro and imovie6
I filmed by guessing and use the crowd fences as a tripod. But you cannot control the angle when your back to the computer. And the battery not fully charged made me miss the performance of the Thunderbirds.
Now I need a stabilizer for laptop, and a new camera while the A1U is at the garage.
edited in Final cut pro
audio: imovie + a second(security) track on audacity.just had to use audio of I movie for the edit bout double it and a bit echo on track B, an Eq on track A

Somnang Vann June 16th, 2008, 06:31 PM Hey everyone, here are links to four episodes that we created. The series is called Eye of Sita and it's a comedy/action/drama. It's about a group of professionals going after a famous diamond (hence the title). Two of professionals also want to be filmmakers so they're playing director and actor while on the job(killing, stealing, etc). The other two are exact opposites and always seem to end up teamed together.
Feedback is always appreciated it. Would help also in future episodes too. :) Thanks!

Although these are basic concepts to most of you here at DVinfo, the audience for these tutorials are amateurs who may not have ever considered using these techniques to enhance their videos.
As always your input and comments are very welcome.
Thanks,

Manfred Lopez June 18th, 2008, 01:21 PM Hi
This is my first post here. I'm a longtime reader of this great site. So anyway, I finally worked up my nerve to upload to the net the first paid directing gig I've ever done and I was looking for some feedback (I tried posting it over at another site but I didn't get any responses). The piece in question is a music video that was shot on the HVX200 with no budget in one day and a half. The music is from a band from Mexico and they play in the 'grupero' genre. So anyway, let me know what you think.

Jim Miller June 18th, 2008, 07:26 PM I couldn't understand the words but the images told me the whole story. Very well done. Nice shot selection and good pacing on the edit.
Eddie Lebron June 20th, 2008, 12:27 PM The second in my "Love in Chinatown" series, I present my newest short film "Secrecy".
For those of you unfamiliar with the trilogy, I posted my first installment a few months ago entitled "Loveless". The "Loveless" thread is linked below:
http://dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=113255
The film features new characters in a new situation (although one actor from "Loveless" returns to play a new character, haha). The "Love in Chinatown" series is a trilogy consisting of 3 romance stories taking place within Chinatown and I'm scheduled to shoot the third one this Fall. As of now, I'm currently submitting "Loveless" and "Secrecy" into as many festivals as I can!
Plot:
John and Ami have been the best of friends for many years. Ami is currently pregnant with her boyfriend's child while John is his first serious relationship but all that is thrown into jeopardy due to one mistake in the past. A mistake that will effect all parties involved, especially the friendship of John and Ami. The second installment in the "Love in Chinatown" series.
Running Time: 18 minutes
Language: English
In my eyes, this film is a bit more grim than "Loveless". I personally thought I made it in a similar fashion to "Loveless" but, although my style and trademarks are apparent, many have said I approached this film differently in terms of overall execution (which pleases since it allows for two different viewing experiences).

Simon Reed June 21st, 2008, 03:26 PM Not necessarily looking for peer review (accepting this is not a work of art), but thought others might be interested in it.
This is what happens if you get up at 0130 on a summers' morning to go flying with the express intent of buzzing all 5 London Airports, then filming the result.
Only possible with the express approval of ATC (friends on the inside), and even then if there is no prospect of delaying airliners as a result - hence ridiculously early start.
In the UK, this kind of access is virtually impossible to get (certainly Heathrow in a fixed-wing light aircraft is impossible under normal circumstances - the others slightly easier, but still difficult). Even we didn't expect to get all five. I'm fairly certain this has never been done before (or since - it was filmed last year).
You'll also find a timelapse of the entire flight if you are interested.

Daniel Alexander June 22nd, 2008, 05:23 AM i thought that was excellent. I really enjoyed the story, the locations, the colours and especially the sound. I was a little unsure of the pacing at the begining of the film as it was abit hard to see where it was going but still i loved it.
Ivan Castell June 22nd, 2008, 05:43 AM i thought that was excellent. I really enjoyed the story, the locations, the colours and especially the sound. I was a little unsure of the pacing at the begining of the film as it was abit hard to see where it was going but still i loved it.
Thanks for the comments. The sound was post-produced profesionnaly in a studio, that why it sounds so good (I'm glad I did it this time) :)
I understand your thoughts about the pacing, I edited the film this way, knowing it was going to be hard to follow, I wanted to provoke anguish via the editing.

Adam Smith June 24th, 2008, 12:47 PM I dig it, especially the promo. I was left wanting some more close up / macro / fisheye shots, but I'm kind of a geek for that sort of thing.
Good music, good edits, good overlay...very nice work!

Adam Smith June 24th, 2008, 12:51 PM Nice work....I like the out of focus wipes at the beginning, and the music is perfect for the footage.
Get yourself a tripod and you're in business. The zooms are good IMO, as long as they're not horrible overused. For first time back in the swing of things, I'm impressed.

Andrew Kufahl June 24th, 2008, 08:07 PM That was pretty cool. Great colors and compositions/framing. This music was perfect. Very inspiring.
By the way... I love everything about your "If I Lay Here" film. I keep a copy on my desktop and pop it open for inspiration every now and then. That shot near the end with the guy sitting at the table smoking... the silver pot on the table... then the camera slides across... superb!
Keep up the awesome work,
Andrew

Chris Barcellos June 25th, 2008, 03:21 PM Hey all:
Check out the website for Spectre, a Fantasy movie: http://www.spectre-movie.com/
In May 2008, I DP'd principle photography for the film, which was produced and directed by DVInfo Member Jason Denzel. As usual, Jason was a master at setting up some beautiful shots. It was my second shooting with Jason, and I learned a lot about composition every time I work with him.
He is also going to have a lot of CG and special effects to put into film, and he has a crew and his own background in the field to back him up.
The shooting was quite a grueling experience, because we put in a lot of hours and travel in Northern California- but it was well worth it at the same time.
We were originally planning to shoot with the HV20 and Letus Combo, when at last moment 3 days before shoot, we go our hand on an HVX200, thanks to Alan Carpenter. That was an experience for me, and the HVX is quite a stunning camera. DVinfo member Mark Viducich provided a Letus FE, and a Nebtek monitor, and I had an arsenal of Nikon lenses. We also had Alan's EZ Jib, which was cool to work with. Chris Swanberg brought his mics and sound expertise.
The Letus FE had problems about half way through the shoot, and we are going to have to work out issues because the ground glass would stop in mid shot. We did recognize issue right away because the shots were at a large water fall that pounded all around us. Eventually, we had to shoot with my old Letus 35a, and had some issues we had to deal with there-- another learning experience.
I also mangaged to dunk my 100 mm len in temple pool... and have replaced it already.
I have seen most of the footage and have played with some assembly edits as a learning experience, and Jason should put together a pretty nice edit of this short. I think it will run about 20 to 25 minutes. I'll post with progress as things go on....
Oren Arieli June 25th, 2008, 04:52 PM Overall, good footage that was well put together. I couldn't make out the last sound-byte, and some of the footage was too dark for my taste.
