I've been shooting some second unit stuff with again, the Arri 235 great, little, noisy (sounds like a blender) camera. And then it hit me. Why do you even need film?
Older video assist systems suck big time. Grainy, jumpy, even black and white on some. With modern cameras, like 235, or 435, they look pretty good. With all the white balance, black balance controls.
So my theory is to get some form of a miniDV deck. Plug the output from the video assist into it, output from the sound guy in the other. And voilla. Looks like film. Depth of field and everything.
The resolution is like SD PAL, but hey so is the finishing media.
Anybody tried this yet?
If it works, then it'd be wonderful to shoot shorts and stuff on. I mean in my place a Kodak 50ISA Daylight 400 feet would be like 140 bucks. Using tape would be way cheaper, it it works. Then you have to somehow professionally color correct it, that's alot of the film look.
