How would I get good,rich looking mono footage with my A1? Someone has asked me to shoot a music video and the B/W preset I looked at looks a bit...wishy-washy? I'm looking for the white clouds and dark sky you'd get with a red filter and monochrome film(would a polarizer work?)

Why not do it in post?

Yes, shoot it all in colour and convert it in Premiere or Final Cut. This will give you far more control on contrast etc. and of course you will have the footage in colour - you will have far more scope especially when the clients asks what would it look like in colour.

I would use a red filter and then shoot in color and do the desat in post in case I wanted to go a different direction other than bw at some point.

Shooting for a B&W end product means lighting will be the most important factor in how your project looks. It's true in color too, but when you take color away, lighting will be what really separates your subjects from the background and makes your shots work or not work. A deep blue filter for viewing with your eyeballs should help you see what you'll end up with and help guide you in lighting and composing your scenes.
