View Full Version : Tales of Wonder and Woe: UWOL #3
Gabriel Yeager May 19th, 2007, 12:23 PM Thanks Meryem..
I like a few of the clips in there, but maybe I will cut it.
It would not have turned out so bad if I could have got the time-lapse to work.. Dumb Imovie..
Thanks for the tip, you have a good point!
~Gabriel
Kevin Railsback May 19th, 2007, 05:23 PM Well, I have diddle squat to go with my mushroom, duck and flower.
I spent about $70 in gas today driving to numerous state and county parks with nothing that even looked remotely interesting.
Found an out of the way state park called Hanging Rock. You'd think that would be interesting right? Nope. Walked down the trail for about two miles then came to a gate that send end of state land.
So, I walked the two miles back without even taking my camera out.
Saw all kind of prairie trilliums and other wildflowers that had all died off now that the trees have leafed out. No wildlife other than a bazillion blood sucking vampire skeeters! 100% Deet and a different repellant on top of that did nothing to deter them. I look like I have chicken pox I have so many bites on me.
Well, tomorrow is do or die. I'll be up and out by 4AM going back to the nature center where I shot the mushroom, duck and flower to see if I can at least add another couple shots. Then I need to head to one more location for the beginning of the film.
Hopefully it will all pan out.
Oliver Reik May 19th, 2007, 05:32 PM [...] Well, tomorrow is do or die. [...]
Good luck! :-D
Regards, Oliver
Dale Guthormsen May 19th, 2007, 06:27 PM Trying to down load.
I tried to copy and paste, get to the page and it wont highlight the paste button!!
Did a simple drag to the page, the page goes blank, bottom of page has a done in the lower left corner but I do not know how it could be!!
The page I got to has three lines of letters with page lines between them, that is the right page to drag to isn't it???
Dale Guthormsen May 19th, 2007, 07:24 PM Deed is done!!
went to my other computer on the other network and it worked perfect!!!
says and hour a a bit to finish.
Thanks all!!!
Meryem, sorry for bothering you!!!
hope it all works out nicely on yours, looking forward to seeing it!!!
Gabriel Yeager May 19th, 2007, 08:09 PM Hey Kevin, I feel your pain!
Those nasty bugs love to eat me!
Do you drive a truck? Thats abit of money to go through and not find anything... These gas prices are really annoying!
We spent probably $15 or so on our trips for this challenge (we took two to the same place). It was only 7 miles from my house!!!
Were you at-least able find a cash well you were out driving?
I hope you get something Kevin, I love your films!
Best wishes everyone!
~Gabriel
Mat Thompson May 19th, 2007, 08:16 PM Believe me guys if you lived in the uk you'd know the cost of petrol!!! On this challenge alone I'm now at over £120 ! thats $240 US !
Anyway....time for bed !
Kevin Railsback May 19th, 2007, 09:27 PM Yeah we're at $3.29 right now for Unleaded Plus.
Hitting the road early to see if I can scrounge up something.
Then I have to get all my gear cleaned and packed as I'm headed out to Yellowstone for several weeks. Man, the wild stuff I could have shot there! :)
Dale Guthormsen May 19th, 2007, 10:53 PM guys,
yes the gas is getting out of hand.
Filled up today, 1.26 per litre!! That is 4.75 per gallon!!!!
My dodge 4x4 half ton does not get driven much these days. The volkswagen disel was a good investment!!! my tacoma 4x4 is better but not a whole lot.
I quit keeping track of gas expenses, just to depressing!!!
I drove two hours just to film some horned owls, that was about 40.00 for 8 seconds of video. I do not want to count anymore!! I hate money!!!
Gabriel Yeager May 19th, 2007, 11:50 PM Wow you guys spend alot of money on this challenge.. I guess I was raised on the cheaper side though.
Its $3.39 a gallon for the cheap stuff here. Not fun. My Ford Bronco gets about 9 miles to the gallon!
I agree, money is depressing!!
Good-luck on your trip to Yellowstone, and have fun!
~Gabriel
Geir Inge May 20th, 2007, 02:23 AM Well, I just have to contribute to the petrol matter :)
Norway is an oil producing nation, still we have to pay about 1.98 pr. litre for unleaded gas. But I don't mind really, it's time to think environment.
But I remember in the year of 1973, when the world had an "oil crisis".
In the weekends only public transport were aloud in Norway.
Even our late King Olav did use the public transport, like on this picture, on his way cross country skiing :) He is the one to the right, paying his ticket on the streetcar.
Jeff Hendricks May 20th, 2007, 06:21 AM So Meryem,
Are we talking mignight of the 21st?...just need to know how much time I have left.
Jeff
Mat Thompson May 20th, 2007, 06:53 AM I don't know about tales of woe but this film has now left me unable to walk !!
After forgeting the ef adapter the other day yesterday I went back out again to get the shots I'd missed. My feet were still sore from the previous days hike (10 miles of rocks and sand).
After completing it yesterday I now have the worst blister I've ever had.....it is SO painfull ! Hey ho what you do for your art huh :) Luckilly editing doesnt require quite so much effort....just a hobble to the kitchen for a cup of tea :)
Kevin Railsback May 20th, 2007, 11:40 AM Well, I'm back. Filled up several P2 cards so we'll see if I have enoough to put something together or not.
I'm going to try and do some editing and see where I'm at. May head out towards evening to fill in any gaps if I have to.
The sad thing is that in a few weeks things around here will change and there will be all kinds of things to film.
We're right at the crossroads where everything looks like weeds and it's thick as a jungle and the bugs are beyond horrible.
I swear I lost another quart of blood this morning!!
Chris Barcellos May 20th, 2007, 11:49 AM "and it's thick as a jungle and the bugs are beyond horrible."
Sounds like the wild to me.....
Kevin Railsback May 20th, 2007, 11:53 AM Yeah, but if you try and film it, all you get is a green glob with no definition.
Gabriel Yeager May 20th, 2007, 02:27 PM I swear I lost another quart of blood this morning!!
Vampire, where!!!??? lol!
~Gabriel
Trond Saetre May 20th, 2007, 03:23 PM Vampire, where!!!???
Now, that is pretty much "the wild"!
Why didn't I come up with that idea, haha.
I finally finished and uploaded my video.
Absolutely not the best I have made, but at least it is something.
Managed to get something useful on the 3rd attempt.
I'm looking forward to see all the entries.
Jeff Hendricks May 20th, 2007, 05:22 PM Anybody know if the due date maens May 21st midnight or by the morning of May 21st?
Thanks,
Jeff
Meryem Ersoz May 20th, 2007, 05:52 PM midnight anywhere in the world, may 21st....
Kevin Railsback May 20th, 2007, 06:47 PM Well, it's compressed and uploading as I write this.
What a challenge this one was! It's not my best film but I hope it's not my worst! :)
I hope it makes sense to everyone. Nothing really spectacular but I have to put it to bed so I can start cleaning gear and getting it ready to ship out tomorrow for my trip to Yellowstone.
I have to say, this challenge really wore me out as I went out almost daily and came up empty handed, day after day.
Finally in a filming frenzy, I filmed pretty much all the footage this morning.
With partly cloudy skies I had anything from harsh shadows to flat light.
Normally once the sun has been up for a couple hours, I call it a day until the sun starts getting low on the horizon once again.
But since I was up against the wall, I filmed well past my normal shooting times. I just went deeper into the woods to try and get a better light.
So, hopefully some of you will enjoy it. I haven't really had a chance to sit back and look at it because as soon as I finished, I compressed it and now it's uploading.
At least I stayed out of the tank again! :)
And where did I get 90% of the shots today? Fromt the same trail I hiked for my UWOL2 film, "Geocaching." See if you recognize any of the same areas with all the greenery all grown up.
Catherine Russell May 21st, 2007, 08:36 AM Hi Everyone!
Glad to be back in the loop with all of you! No tales of woe on this one, I simply once again had a splendid time. Now I had two wonderful things happen:
!) I am shooting all of these films with both a digital still and video camera that are probably 10 years old and infinitely out of date. It's all I have. But miracles can still happen. The video of the bee in my uwol 3 - "go wild" clip was a wonderful surprise and a great testimony to how good 10 year old cameras were in their day!
2) THANKS TO KEN DWIERT! He has taken me under his wing in a sense and gave me great advice on a compression software package called: SORENSON SQUEEZE 4.5. Everyone now hear this! If you are having problems compressing your files and having them still look good and don't have this software, You MUST get this package. It's downloadable and costs $500.00 US dollars. It's a must investment. Ken advised I invest in this before investing in new camera equipment and all the software/hardware to support it. After I finished with uwol3 I started the compression with the utilities I have in After Effects and FCP. I was way over file-size limit (80-90 megs) and IT LOOKED HORRIBLE! I remembered what Ken wrote about Sorenson Squeeze and in a desperate state downloaded it to try it. It is simple to use, very self-explanatory and user friendly. Friends, I easily compressed my uwol3 movie with full audio and video to a measly 38 megs, and (forgive my bias) it LOOKS GREAT!
So! These are my two tales of Wonder and Joy!
All the best to everyone this challenge and looking forward to all the creative and beautiful things you all have done.
Sincerely,
Cat Russell

Catherine Russell May 21st, 2007, 08:52 AM Hi Kevin and Mat:
Wow! Blasting through some of these posts, I am humbled by your fortitude and hard work! I know these efforts will come out in your films. I can't wait to view them.
Would you guys ever throw tomatoes at me for confessing that my filming was done on walks right out my front door and if I did drive (once), it was within a couple of miles from where I live? Just checking!
Three cheers for all your hard work to put up something beautiful for the rest of us to enjoy!
Sincerely,
Cato
Per Johan Naesje May 21st, 2007, 09:15 AM Would you guys ever throw tomatoes at me for confessing that my filming was done on walks right out my front door and if I did drive (once), it was within a couple of miles from where I live? Just checking! No sweat Catherine, if you was able to film "The Wild" at your front door, I'm impressed! No tomatoes, eggs or whatsoever from me ;-)
And as you can see, someone took a real knock, in the eager to find "The Wild"!
Three cheers for all your hard work to put up something beautiful for the rest of us to enjoy!
Sincerely,
CatoSecond that!
Catherine Russell May 21st, 2007, 09:50 AM Hi Per:
What can I say, the Norwegian contingent in this contest certainly adds spice to the group. I'm becoming fast friends with you, Geir and Trond not only because of your professional and artistic abilities that add such a challenge to this contest, but your great sense of humor as well!
Cat
Meryem Ersoz May 21st, 2007, 09:57 AM yah, norwegians rock! and they make groovy videos, too....
Gabriel Yeager May 21st, 2007, 12:55 PM Sounds like you are having a good time, Cat. Good to hear it!
Would you guys ever throw tomatoes at me for confessing that my filming was done on walks right out my front door and if I did drive (once), it was within a couple of miles from where I live? Just checking!
Nope, never. Everything I do is within walking distance almost.. :) I've only once (well, I went there twice, but it was the same exact place) drove to a location, and those shots will be in the entry, but they did not turn out well..
yah, norwegians rock! and they make groovy videos, too....
I very much second that! :D
Time for me to get that music to match and upload...
~Gabriel
Geir Inge May 21st, 2007, 01:14 PM Love you guys, big hug from me :) and I think we all rock.
After all, we're international in uwol and together we're making some great wildlife films. As Meryem says, "this is history", and we're making it.

Tom Schumann May 21st, 2007, 01:37 PM hi everyone!
just finished uploading my first entry to an uwol challenge and thought i could write a first post as well.
i had great fun shooting and editing my film about the monkeys of gibraltar . the wild seems to have produced some films that sound very promising - and i can't wait to see them (especially the gibbon entry that uploaded at the same time as mine).
i am already enjoying this community a lot. there is so much to learn just by reading the feedbacks to all the films. glad that i found uwol.
tom
Catherine Russell May 21st, 2007, 01:52 PM Welcome Tom:
UWOL is one thing you will never regret! All the best and have fun. Wow, monkeys? This challenge is going to be great. Can't wait to see your film.
Hi Geir, did you ever get the bird shit off your head? Talk about everyone going the extra mile!
Hi Gabriel, nice to hear from you again. We are looking forward to what you have cooked up this time!
Cat
Trond Saetre May 21st, 2007, 02:18 PM 2) THANKS TO KEN DWIERT! He has taken me under his wing in a sense and gave me great advice on a compression software package called: SORENSON SQUEEZE 4.5. Yeah, I got the Squeeze for UWOL3, and it sure made a noticable difference in picture quality vs file size.
(compared to encode quicktime directly from Premiere Pro 2.0)
oh, and Catherine, it's not the equipment that makes the movie! It's YOU, the person behind the camera! A skilled person can make great movies from old equipment too. So don't worry!
Trond Saetre May 21st, 2007, 02:27 PM Love you guys, big hug from me :) and I think we all rock.

I agree with you on that one Geir.
And it is so nice to get to know people with the same interests from around the world.
So a big thank you to Meryem and her team for all the work they do for the UWOL Challenge!
Steven Gotz May 21st, 2007, 02:35 PM I got my gibbons uploaded today. Nice and painless, so thanks for that.
I won't say much about mine except that it is not what I went out to shoot. I wrote what I was going to use as a voiceover and decided to just let the images tell one story with the backstory be for those who want to read it.
I tried something different this time to get my Sorenson 3 export, and it seemed to look OK.
Catherine Russell May 21st, 2007, 06:25 PM Hi Trond:
Nice to hear from you again! Thanks for the encouragement and past good advice. You also have given me lots of your time and experienced information on equipment and such, which is sincerely appreciated!
Excited to see what you and everyone else have come up with for this challenge!
All the best,
Cat
Meryem Ersoz May 21st, 2007, 07:56 PM my tale of wonder is that, with the exception of mat's gnarly blister, this UWOL Challenge is proceeding so smoothly that i hardly know what to make of it. we have 23 uploads and counting! and i'm barely breathin'!
you guys are awesome! can't wait to see the entries! and to have one of my own up is icing on the cake....
Bruce Foreman May 21st, 2007, 09:37 PM I got my gibbons uploaded today. Nice and painless, so thanks for that.
...Uploaded Gibbons...
...painless...
This I gotta see!
Bruce Foreman May 21st, 2007, 09:41 PM Hi Geir, did you ever get the bird shit off your head?
Cat
I'm trying to imagine the sound of that two word term with a Norwegian accent.
Jeff Hendricks May 22nd, 2007, 12:07 AM Its 11:00 pm here and my file is uploading...hopefully to the correct place.
My toes were being nibbled on by the sharks...
Jeff
Jeff Hendricks May 22nd, 2007, 12:25 AM Well it has been uploaded...with 37 minutes to spare.
Am I back in college?

Catherine, you are very welcome.
That's what dvinfo.net is all about. Share our wisdom and experiences.
I'm looking forward to see your video too.
hmm, another idea for the upcoming uwol challenges... "include our bloopers", haha.
we have 23 uploads and counting!
It's really good to see that so many of us have made videos for uwol3.
Hopefully many more will see how much fun we have and join us for the uwol4,5,6....
Hi Geir, did you ever get the bird shit off your head?
I'm trying to imagine the sound of that two word term with a Norwegian accent.
Yeah, Geir, your camera was running and you have included this little accident in your film, right? Or maybe someone else has to help Bruce with his imagination...
Geir Inge May 22nd, 2007, 03:54 AM I regret I mentioned that sea gull striking my beautiful moon in my back head, just kidding :) The camera was not running and I had to use raincape for it all the time, since above me, where thousands of birds. So it's not on my film, sorry folks. This is just one of those things you have to, think of, laugh a bit, think of, and then laugh again :)
Per Johan Naesje May 22nd, 2007, 04:19 AM I regret I mentioned the that sea gull striking my beautiful moon in my back head, just kidding :)Ha, ha Geir Inge, with my imagination I will sit down and enjoy every minute of your film :-)
Is it not time to find some beverage and popcorn, the clock is almost afternoon Tuesday 22. at my place.
Meryem you have to wake up and give us something to watch... ;-)
Meryem Ersoz May 22nd, 2007, 07:12 AM ah, the perils of running an international contest. i am just waking up--i got up at 6:30am, not like i am slacking here!! the coffee is still brewing, and the norwegians are chomping at the bit half a world away....
fortunately our web guru in the UK was hard at work while i was fast asleep to bring you your films....
we're truly international!
Steven Gotz May 22nd, 2007, 07:39 PM Having seen larger versions of some of the entries, it ocurred to me that I may be the only one taking advantage of the small frame size to get the best part of the frame into the movie.
I found that shooting in HDV, and bringing HDV into a 320X240 project gives me the opportunity to do in Post what I don't have the talent to do while shooting the video. I get a chance to reframe each shot.
For example, the Antelopes are interesting, but my method would have allowed me to use a small part of the larger frame instead of having to zoom in while shooting. So I would get really tight closeups.
Is anyone else doing this?
Kevin Railsback May 22nd, 2007, 07:47 PM Sometimes I'll take 1080 footage and put it on a 720 timeline so I can scale it and movie it around.
It works great for making the moon look bigger. :)
